When most people picture a classroom, they see rows of desks, a blackboard at the front, and a teacher addressing students. But that image captures only a fraction of what a classroom truly is. A learning environment encompasses the physical space, the psychological atmosphere, the social context, and the cultural conditions in which students learn – and all of these elements together define what we call “the classroom.” Understanding the concept of a classroom properly means going beyond the furniture and the four walls to examine the purpose it serves, the type of learning it supports, and the structures through which it operates.

Formal vs. informal learning: two sides of the same coin

Before we can fully appreciate what a classroom is and does, it helps to understand the two broad types of learning it can house: formal and informal.

What is formal learning?

Formal learning is deliberate, structured, and institution-driven. According to Springer’s Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning, formal learning must include a predefined set of learning outcomes, an instructor, and an evaluation of individual learning achievements. In a school or university, this translates to a fixed syllabus, trained teachers, timetables, and assessments – all working together to guide learners through a defined body of knowledge. A student attending a chemistry lecture or sitting for a board examination is experiencing formal learning in its most recognizable form.

Formal education is also progressive – it moves in stages (primary, secondary, higher education) and awards recognized qualifications like certificates and degrees. Formal education is organised with a certain curriculum, taught by trained teachers, and has levels through which it flows. This progression ensures that learning builds systematically, with each stage preparing learners for the next.

What is informal learning?

Informal learning, by contrast, happens without a planned structure, a fixed setting, or a predetermined goal. Informal learning is characterized by a low degree of planning and organizing of the learning context, learning support, learning time, and learning objectives. It occurs naturally in everyday life – a child learning road safety by observing traffic, a student picking up a new skill from a peer, or a teacher improving their practice by reading an educational blog. There is no curriculum, no examination, and no formal credential at the end.

Importantly, estimates suggest that about 70-90% of adult learning takes place informally and outside educational institutions. This makes informal learning not a lesser form of education, but a powerful and pervasive one. The true value comes from combining both approaches to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations.

Why this distinction matters for the classroom

The classroom is most commonly associated with formal learning – but it is not limited to it. Informal learning happens inside classrooms too, through peer conversations, spontaneous questions, and unplanned discussions that spark genuine curiosity. Formal and informal learning are not mutually exclusive – and recognizing this gives educators a richer understanding of the learning that takes place in their rooms every single day.

Defining the classroom: more than a physical space

Now that the learning context is clear, we can define what a classroom actually is – and the definition is broader than it first appears.

Classroom learning is the fundamental mode of education where students gather in a physical space under the guidance of a teacher or instructor to engage in structured learning activities. But the classroom is also a social space – one where students engage with peers, develop relationships, and experience personal growth alongside academic development.

Educational theorists often refer to the environment as the “third teacher” – after the parent and the classroom educator – because the space itself dictates how learners behave and interact. This framing reminds us that the physical arrangement, the emotional climate, and the social culture of a classroom all actively shape what and how students learn.

Research consistently supports this view. High-quality learning environments are associated with outcomes such as increased satisfaction and motivation, and better academic performance. Meanwhile, positive classroom climate has been found to be related to enhanced academic achievement, constructive learning processes, and reduced emotional problems. In other words, the classroom is not a neutral backdrop – it is an active ingredient in learning.

A well-functioning classroom also has clear routines and structures. When teachers establish classroom routines, they create a consistent, predictable sequence of events that help students understand what to expect and what is expected of them during class. This predictability reduces anxiety and builds the kind of safe environment where learners can take intellectual risks.

Types of classroom structures

No single classroom model suits every subject, age group, or educational goal. Over time, three broad structures have emerged – each with its own logic, strengths, and limitations.

Traditional classroom

The traditional classroom is the model most people grew up with. The teacher stands at the front, delivers content through lectures or demonstrations, and students – seated in rows – listen, take notes, and respond when asked. Direct instruction is perhaps civilization’s oldest method of formal, structured education and continues to be a dominant form throughout the world.

This model works well for transmitting large amounts of structured content efficiently, maintaining discipline, and preparing students for standardized examinations. It is particularly effective in subjects with a clear body of established knowledge – mathematics, grammar, or historical timelines – where students need a solid theoretical foundation before application.

However, the traditional model has known limitations. Students are largely passive recipients of information, which can reduce engagement, particularly for learners who benefit from doing rather than just listening. The physical arrangement of the classroom – where students are seated, how they move about, and the overall atmosphere – needs to be considered in relation to the academic, social, and emotional needs of learners. Rows of desks work for teacher-directed instruction but are not ideal for collaborative or exploratory learning.

Interactive classroom

The interactive classroom shifts the dynamic significantly. Here, the teacher acts more as a facilitator than a lecturer, and students are active participants rather than passive audiences. Learning happens through discussions, group projects, debates, peer teaching, and problem-solving activities.

In a positive classroom environment, authority is more distributed than centralized, and the talk between teacher and student is personalized. This distributed authority is central to interactive classrooms – students co-construct knowledge rather than simply receive it. Desk arrangements typically shift from rows to clusters or semicircles to facilitate face-to-face interaction.

Research on learning environments supports this approach. Effective teachers build a classroom climate where risk-taking is welcomed, student questioning is high, and engagement is the norm. Interactive classrooms deliberately cultivate that climate. They are especially well-suited to subjects that require critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills – humanities, science investigations, and project-based learning all thrive in this structure.

Technology-integrated classroom

The technology-integrated classroom does not replace either of the above – it enhances them. According to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), such classrooms allow educators to rethink education and create innovative learning environments.

In practice, technology integration takes many forms. Interactive whiteboards display multimedia content, tablets allow students to access educational apps and conduct research, and Learning Management Systems (LMS) platforms like Google Classroom and Moodle streamline the distribution of resources and communication between teachers and students. Beyond hardware, tools like Kahoot! for gamified quizzes and platforms like Khan Academy for self-paced learning add significant flexibility to classroom instruction.

One particularly influential model in this space is the flipped classroom. The flipped classroom model involves reversing the traditional teaching approach by having students learn new content at home through online videos and readings, and then using class time for interactive activities and discussions. This allows the teacher’s physical presence to be used for the moments that need it most – guided practice, clarification, and collaboration.

The benefits are well-documented. Technology in classrooms increases student engagement, enables personalized learning opportunities, improves collaboration, enhances access to resources, and develops essential digital literacy skills. That said, technology integration also comes with challenges – unequal access to devices, screen fatigue, and the risk of prioritizing tools over actual learning are real concerns that educators must navigate thoughtfully.

Choosing the right classroom structure

Each classroom structure has its place, and no single model is universally superior. The most effective classrooms often blend elements from all three. A science teacher might use direct instruction to introduce a concept, shift to group work for a lab activity, and use a digital platform to collect and analyze results – all within the same lesson.

The choice of structure should be guided by three key questions: What does the subject demand – theoretical knowledge or hands-on application? What do the learners need – structure, collaboration, or self-paced exploration? And what resources are available – in terms of space, technology, and teacher expertise?

Because every classroom has its own individual needs and character, there is no one best way to create a structured learning environment. The classroom, at its core, is not a fixed formula – it is a responsive, evolving space shaped by the needs of the people within it.
