Not all students are evaluated the same way – and that difference matters more than most people realize. A Class 9 student in India sits for periodic tests and submits homework through the year. A college student balances internal assignments against a high-stakes semester-end paper. A management student at IIM Calcutta presents research, defends ideas in a viva, and takes surprise quizzes – all in the same term. These are not just procedural differences. They reflect fundamentally different philosophies about what learning is, and how it should be measured. Understanding how schools, colleges, and autonomous institutions evaluate students helps educators, parents, and students navigate these systems more effectively.

The two pillars of student evaluation

Before diving into how different institutions evaluate students, it helps to understand the two foundational assessment types that underpin most educational evaluation systems worldwide.

According to Indiana University’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, formative assessment is designed to improve – rather than evaluate – students’ skills or understanding of specific course concepts. It is typically low-stakes, conducted in class, and provides feedback to both students and instructors about how well students understand the material. Summative assessment, by contrast, is formal, usually graded, and focused on letting students demonstrate a range of skills and knowledge at the end of a learning period.

As Linways notes in its overview of assessment in higher education, the key difference between the two types comes down to timing and purpose: formative assessments are ongoing and focus on the process of learning, while summative assessments are administered at the end of a unit or course to evaluate overall mastery. Together, they form the backbone of every evaluation system – whether in a government school in rural India or a premier management institute in Kolkata.

How schools evaluate students

In Indian schools, evaluation has evolved significantly over the past decade. Schools today rely on a blend of both formative and summative tools, with the balance shifting depending on the board, grade level, and educational policy in force.

Formative assessment in schools

Formative assessment in schools happens continuously. It includes quizzes, class discussions, homework assignments, group activities, teacher observations, and short tests conducted through the term. These methods focus on improvement rather than final results, giving students regular feedback while learning is still in progress. This allows them to correct mistakes and build understanding before high-stakes evaluations arrive.

The pedagogical value of ongoing formative feedback is well-established: formative assessment, due to its constant nature, constitutes the bulk of assessment activity in most classroom settings, even if summative scores dominate the final report card.

Summative assessment and the board exam cycle

Summative assessments – term-end exams, projects, and annual board examinations – provide a consolidated picture of what a student has learned over a defined period. In the Indian context, these carry enormous social and institutional weight. The board exam cycle in India, with its societal and parental weight, is a documented source of significant student stress. However, this does not make summative assessment dispensable – it is an argument for designing it thoughtfully and preparing students for it honestly.

CBSE has moved in this direction. Starting with the 2024-25 academic session, CBSE mandated that 50% of year-end examinations for Classes IX-X consist of competency-focused questions – questions that require students to apply, analyze, and evaluate rather than reproduce definitions from memory. This shift also reinforces the link between formative and summative work: if the final exam demands application, daily classroom tasks must mirror that cognitive demand.

The combination of regular formative feedback and structured summative review gives school-going students a balanced evaluation framework – one that supports continuous learning while also certifying achievement at key milestones.

How colleges evaluate students

College-level evaluation in India operates within a more formalized framework, typically structured around internal (continuous) assessment and external (university) examinations. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been the primary body shaping these norms for affiliated institutions across the country.

Internal continuous evaluation

Internal evaluation is conducted throughout the semester by the faculty member handling the course. It is based on internal examinations and a range of assignment types, including homework, problem solving, group discussions, quizzes, term projects, spot tests, role play, and software exercises. This continuous internal evaluation (CIE) is designed to track a student’s progress regularly rather than relying solely on a single end-of-term examination.

The UGC has strongly advocated for expanding the weight of internal evaluation. The UGC has recommended that all higher education institutions conduct periodic assessment of student performance in classes, giving it at least 30-40% weight in semester-end evaluations. Internal and periodic evaluation can take many forms – seminars, presentations, laboratory work, unit tests, and peer reviews – all assessed by the faculty member who taught the course.

External summative examinations

External evaluation remains a fixture of Indian college education. The external theory examination for all semesters is conducted by the University at the end of each semester, contributing the major share of a student’s final grade. Under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), most institutions follow a split of approximately 25-30% internal and 70-75% external weightage – though this varies by institution type and discipline.

This split has long been debated. A UGC-appointed committee has stated that memorization should be discouraged and that improvement is possible only when the right blend of internal and external evaluation is achieved. The committee proposed moving toward a model where internal assessment carries as much as 75% of the total weight – a radical departure from the current norm. This shift remains a work in progress across Indian universities.

How autonomous institutions evaluate students: the IIM Calcutta model

Autonomous institutions – those free from direct university affiliation and empowered to design their own curricula and evaluation systems – represent the most flexible end of the spectrum. Among them, the Indian Institutes of Management stand out as exemplars of blended, multi-modal assessment. IIM Calcutta, established in 1961 as India’s first national institute for postgraduate management education, offers a particularly instructive case study.

A blended evaluation architecture

At IIM Calcutta, evaluation is not a single event at the end of a term. It is built into the fabric of the course itself, combining multiple methods that assess different dimensions of a student’s capability. The evaluation structure at IIM Calcutta can include online assessments, case study discussions, quizzes, assignments, offline paper-pencil tests, and class participation, with the final decision on methods resting with the course faculty.

Quizzes serve as regular formative checkpoints, keeping students engaged with course material on an ongoing basis. They are typically unannounced or scheduled at close intervals, preventing the tendency to study only before major exams.

Presentations and group projects are a cornerstone of the management education model. Students are assessed not only on the content of their work but on how they communicate, collaborate, and defend their ideas. This directly mirrors professional settings where articulating a position is as important as developing one.

Research projects require students to go beyond the syllabus – identifying problems, gathering data, analyzing findings, and drawing conclusions. IIM Calcutta’s programmes blend immersive learning with applied project work, ensuring that academic rigor translates into real-world problem-solving capacity.

Viva voce (oral examination) adds another layer of assessment – one that tests depth of understanding rather than surface recall. A student may write a correct answer in a written exam through structured recall, but a viva reveals whether they genuinely understand the concept and can defend it under questioning.

The PGDBA programme, jointly offered by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur, also incorporates a six-month industry internship in the final semester, evaluated collaboratively by all three partner institutes – an approach that treats real-world performance as a legitimate and measurable academic outcome.

How evaluation strategies shape student learning

The method of evaluation is not a neutral administrative choice. It directly influences how students learn, what they prioritize, and how they develop over time.

Continuous assessment builds engagement and reduces anxiety

When students know they are assessed regularly – through quizzes, assignments, and participation – they tend to stay engaged with the material throughout the term rather than cramming before a final exam. Formative evaluation allows teachers to modify their instruction based on how students are progressing in real time, making teaching more responsive and learning more effective. Students also receive timely guidance, allowing them to identify weak areas before they compound.

High-stakes summative exams have a different effect

Summative evaluations – particularly high-stakes final exams – serve a different function. They motivate students to consolidate and synthesize large bodies of knowledge. They also build discipline and time-management skills. However, their downsides are real. Formative assessment has been linked to developmental purposes, while summative assessment focuses on judgemental and quality assurance purposes – and over-reliance on the latter can narrow what students value in learning to what is “on the exam.”

Blended models develop rounded capabilities

The most effective evaluation systems combine both approaches. Performance tasks – actual presentations and viva voce – require students to demonstrate practical and applied skills, not just reproduce knowledge. This is why institutions like IIM Calcutta use multi-modal evaluation: it trains students for environments where they must think, communicate, and perform simultaneously.

Universities in western countries that rely heavily on internal evaluation methods tend to produce graduates whose degrees are valued more broadly in international academic and professional contexts – a pattern that has informed Indian higher education reform debates for years. The argument is not that internal assessment is inherently superior, but that evaluation systems that go beyond a single year-end examination tend to assess more dimensions of a learner.

The National Education Policy 2020 and subsequent curriculum frameworks have moved Indian education clearly in this direction – toward evaluation that is continuous, competency-based, and multi-modal. Schools, colleges, and autonomous institutions are at different points on this journey, but the direction of travel is consistent: move away from high-stakes, memory-testing exams and toward systems that reflect what students can actually do with what they know.
