Learner-centred techniques shift ownership to students – through self-directed inquiry, reflective writing, or choice-based assignments. Objectives should be specific, measurable, and aligned with the broader curriculum goals. Everything else in the strategy – methods, media, assessments – flows from these objectives.

Step 2: Map content to appropriate methods

Not every topic calls for the same approach. Theoretical content may suit lecture and discussion; procedural content needs demonstration and practice; evaluative content benefits from debate or case analysis. Mapping each unit or lesson to the most appropriate method prevents the common mistake of using one mode for all content types.

Getting to know students over time, understanding what types of tasks they respond to, and helping them recognise their own learning strengths – these are not peripheral to strategy formulation. They are central to it.
