Education is one of those words everyone uses but rarely stops to define. We experience it, we debate it, and we build entire systems around it – yet its meaning stretches far beyond classrooms, textbooks, and degrees. When we move into the territory of higher education specifically, the conversation becomes more structured and more consequential. Higher education shapes economies, generates knowledge, and equips individuals for specialized roles in a rapidly changing world. Understanding what education truly means – and how its higher tier has evolved – is essential for anyone thinking seriously about learning, teaching, or the future of society.

What is education?

At its most fundamental level, education is a process through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. But that definition only scratches the surface. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, education encompasses far more than what happens inside institutions – it includes the full range of experiences that shape how a person thinks, behaves, and engages with the world. This broader understanding of education recognizes that learning begins at birth and continues throughout life, happening in homes, communities, workplaces, and, yes, formal schools.

Historically, education was entirely informal. In ancient societies, knowledge was passed down orally – from parents to children, from elders to younger generations – and was closely tied to survival, culture, and moral instruction. Over time, as communities grew more complex, the need for organized, specialized instruction emerged. Teachers began to take on what families had previously handled, and written language made it possible to preserve and transmit knowledge across generations. These shifts laid the groundwork for the formalized education systems we recognize today.

It’s important to hold onto this broad definition of education, because it reminds us that the purpose of learning is never purely academic. Education is fundamentally a formative process – it shapes identity, builds capacity, and prepares individuals to navigate the world meaningfully. Formal schooling, including higher education, is the organized expression of this broader human endeavor.

Higher education: a formalized system

Higher education refers specifically to learning that takes place after the completion of secondary schooling, typically within universities, colleges, professional schools, and vocational institutions. It is distinguished from earlier stages of education by its advanced, specialized nature – rather than building general knowledge and foundational skills, higher education dives deeply into specific disciplines and prepares individuals for professional and intellectual life.

The institutions that make up this system – universities, colleges, technical institutes, and professional schools – serve as the primary environments for academic inquiry, research, and innovation. They are spaces where students engage with experts, encounter cutting-edge knowledge in their fields, and develop the kind of critical, independent thinking that cannot be easily replicated outside structured academic environments. Higher-educational institutions include not only universities and colleges but also various professional schools offering preparation in fields such as law, medicine, business, music, and the arts.

The personal and professional dimensions

Higher education matters at the individual level as much as the institutional one. By acquiring advanced skills and specialized knowledge, graduates are better positioned to contribute to their fields, solve complex problems, and adapt to shifting professional demands. There is also a clear economic dimension: research consistently links higher educational attainment to better career prospects, greater earning potential, and improved job security. Higher education provides relatively strong protection against unemployment, and university graduates are increasingly seen as essential contributors to knowledge-based economies. In many countries today, obtaining a college degree has come to resemble a form of professional insurance – a credential that opens doors and reduces personal risk in an uncertain labour market.

Stages of education in India: the 10+2+3 system

India’s formal education system has its own distinct architecture, shaped by decades of policy reform. The structure most familiar to generations of Indian students is the 10+2+3 system, which organizes education into three sequential stages: ten years of primary and secondary schooling (Classes 1 through 10), two years of higher secondary education (Classes 11 and 12), and three years of undergraduate study at the college or university level.

This pattern was recommended by the Education Commission of 1964-66, widely known as the Kothari Commission, and was introduced across the country around 1975. The Kothari Commission’s goal was to bring uniformity to a fragmented national system – prior to this reform, India had multiple competing school-leaving patterns. The standardized 10+2+3 framework created a common pathway that influenced how universities structured admissions, how curricula were designed, and how students moved through the educational pipeline. Over the following decades, most Indian states adopted this structure, and it became the dominant model shaping both schooling and entry into higher education.

The shift to NEP 2020

After more than four decades, the 10+2+3 system is now being restructured. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, approved by the Indian government in July 2020, introduces a new 5+3+3+4 curricular framework for school education – covering children from age 3 to 18 – and brings significant changes to higher education as well. The new school structure divides learning into a Foundational Stage (ages 3-8), a Preparatory Stage (Classes 3-5), a Middle Stage (Classes 6-8), and a Secondary Stage (Classes 9-12).

The NEP 2020 aims to make education more flexible, inclusive, and aligned with 21st-century learning needs. It proposes to internationalize education in India by allowing selected foreign universities to set up campuses in the country, promoting research collaborations and student exchanges with global institutions. It also introduces multiple entry and exit options in undergraduate programs, an Academic Bank of Credits for greater mobility, and a stronger emphasis on skill development, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning. In many ways, NEP 2020 marks the most ambitious restructuring of Indian education since the Kothari Commission.

The shift towards specialization in higher education

One of the defining features of modern higher education – globally and in India – is its increasing move toward specialization. Early universities, whether in medieval Europe or ancient India, offered education that was broad and integrative. Knowledge was not yet compartmentalized the way it is today. A student might study philosophy, mathematics, theology, and rhetoric as part of a unified intellectual formation.

Contemporary higher education looks very different. Over time, institutions expanded to include more opportunities to craft a skilled workforce and promote science, agriculture, and technology, and departments in fields like chemistry, physics, and engineering began to grow and assert their own academic identities. Today, universities offer highly differentiated programs – from biotechnology to data science to public policy – that reflect the extraordinary complexity of the modern knowledge economy.

This shift toward specialization reflects a broader social reality: as economies become more knowledge-intensive, the demand for advanced, domain-specific expertise grows. Higher education serves as a foundation for forming and developing the innovative capacity that countries need for comprehensive development. The specialization built into degree programs is not merely academic – it is a deliberate response to what labor markets, research environments, and public institutions actually require from graduates.

Balancing specialization with breadth

The move toward specialization does raise important questions. Some educators and policymakers argue that deep expertise in one domain can come at the cost of broader intellectual agility. This tension has led many universities to build interdisciplinary components into their curricula – requiring students to take courses outside their major, integrate multiple disciplines into their research, or engage in problem-based learning that cuts across traditional boundaries. NEP 2020 in India explicitly pushes in this direction, encouraging flexible subject combinations and the removal of hard separations between academic and vocational streams.

The role of research in higher education

Research is not an add-on to higher education – it is one of its core functions. Universities are not simply places where existing knowledge is taught; they are institutions where new knowledge is created. This dual mission – teaching and discovery – is what distinguishes higher education from all other stages of formal learning.

Public universities in the United States alone annually conduct over $61 billion of research, accounting for 66 percent of all university-based research activity. The numbers are striking, but the significance of academic research goes far beyond funding figures. Over a two-year period tracked by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, research at public universities led to thousands of patents, hundreds of startup companies, and thousands of technology licenses – all translating academic inquiry into practical innovations that serve society.

Knowledge creation and its societal ripple effects

The societal impact of university research operates on multiple levels. As noted at the 2023 World Economic Forum in Davos, fundamental scientific research has laid the foundations for many of today’s most important innovations – including the discovery of the structure of DNA and the development of the internet. These breakthroughs did not emerge from industry demand alone; they grew from the sustained, curiosity-driven inquiry that universities uniquely protect and support.

Beyond landmark discoveries, research shapes public health policy, informs legislation, addresses social inequalities, and contributes to environmental sustainability. For universities to transfer knowledge effectively to society, productive interactions between academia, scientists, research councils, and government are essential. This is why modern universities are increasingly described not just as academic institutions but as active participants in regional innovation ecosystems – collaborating with industry, civil society, and government to ensure that research findings translate into real-world benefits.

For students, engaging in research has direct personal benefits as well. Students who engage in research tend to develop higher critical thinking and problem-solving skills – competencies that are valuable across virtually every professional context. Research also strengthens a university’s standing, helping institutions attract top faculty and students, secure funding, and remain competitive in an increasingly globalized higher education landscape.

Education as a continuum

Taken together, education and higher education are best understood not as separate categories but as parts of a continuous developmental arc. Primary and secondary schooling builds the foundation – literacy, numeracy, civic awareness, and basic disciplinary knowledge. Higher education deepens and specializes that foundation, adding research, professional training, and the capacity for independent intellectual contribution. And throughout this arc, the broader formative mission of education – developing the whole person, not just the credentialed professional – remains present.

India’s journey through the 10+2+3 system and now into the NEP 2020 era reflects a wider global pattern: education systems everywhere are wrestling with how to balance access and quality, tradition and innovation, breadth and depth. Higher education must evolve to serve all types of students – flexibility, access, workforce partnerships, and a focus on social mobility are key to delivering on this evolving mission. Whether through classroom instruction, laboratory research, or community engagement, higher education remains one of the most powerful tools for individual and societal transformation.
