Every research project begins long before the first data point is collected – it begins in the library, the database, and increasingly, the browser tab. In educational research, the process of gathering and reviewing existing knowledge is called a literature search, and its quality depends heavily on knowing where to look. The landscape of available literature is broader than most researchers expect: it spans neatly printed textbooks, documentary films, podcast interviews, online journals, and everything in between. Understanding the different types and sources of literature – and how to choose among them wisely – is one of the most practical skills any educational researcher can build.

Why the type of literature you choose matters

Not all sources of literature are equal in research. The type of source you use signals the depth, recency, and credibility of your evidence. Georgia State University Library’s literature review guide classifies research literature into three broad categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary – each serving a distinct purpose in building a research argument.

Primary literature refers to original studies based on direct observation, statistical records, interviews, or experimental methods. These are authored by researchers, contain original data, and are typically published in peer-reviewed journals. In educational research, this might be a study measuring the effect of a new teaching strategy on student outcomes.

Secondary literature takes that original research and interprets or synthesizes it. Examples include review articles, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews, where scholars within a discipline integrate findings across multiple studies. These are especially useful when you want a broad overview of what the field already knows on a topic.

Tertiary literature sits one step further removed – it distills and packages information from both primary and secondary sources. Textbooks, encyclopedias, handbooks, and guidebooks are common examples. While they are excellent starting points for familiarizing yourself with a topic, they are generally not considered sufficient as standalone sources in academic research.

Understanding where a source falls in this hierarchy helps you decide how much weight to give it in your literature review – and how much of your research should rest on each type.

Print materials have long been the cornerstone of academic research, and they remain indispensable in educational research today. This category includes books, journal articles, theses, dissertations, and conference proceedings.

Books and monographs

Academic books – particularly textbooks and specialized monographs – are key sources for theoretical frameworks, historical analysis, and comprehensive reviews of educational topics. They offer depth that shorter publications cannot. When selecting a book, it’s important to verify the publisher’s reputation and the author’s credentials. While books provide strong foundational knowledge, they can sometimes lag behind current developments due to longer publication timelines, which is a real limitation in fast-evolving fields like educational technology.

Peer-reviewed journal articles

Peer-reviewed journal articles are considered the premier source for academic literature reviews. These papers go through a rigorous blind review process where two to three field experts evaluate and accept or reject the submission before publication. This process – which can take 12 to 18 months – ensures a high standard of methodological clarity and academic integrity. In education research, databases like ERIC (Education Resources Information Center), maintained by the U.S. Department of Education, and JSTOR are among the most trusted repositories for peer-reviewed education journals.

Theses, dissertations, and conference papers

Doctoral dissertations and master’s theses represent original research conducted by graduate scholars, often exploring niche topics not covered in mainstream journals. Conference proceedings, while not always peer-reviewed with the same rigor as journals, are valuable for staying current on emerging trends and methodologies in education. Primary sources also include speeches, official reports, and interviews – all of which may appear in thesis research or conference settings.

Audio-visual literature: beyond the printed page

The rise of multimedia technology has expanded what counts as a legitimate research source. Audio-visual materials are no longer supplementary – in many educational research contexts, they are primary sources in their own right.

Documentaries and educational videos

Documentaries and structured educational videos provide visual context for research on teaching methods, classroom dynamics, or education policy. Multimedia tools have been shown to bridge gaps in access to quality education and improve learner performance, making them not just useful sources of research literature but also objects of study themselves. A documentary on inclusive classroom practices, for instance, can provide real-world case studies that enrich theoretical arguments drawn from print sources.

Interviews, recorded lectures, and podcasts

Audio recordings – whether formal research interviews, recorded conference sessions, or education-focused podcasts – offer an experiential layer that written text often cannot. They capture the nuances of tone, lived experience, and professional insight. Research has found that audiovisual input provides richer, more authentic contextual information that can promote deeper understanding of complex topics. In educational research, interviews with teachers, policy makers, or students can serve as primary source material – especially in qualitative studies.

It’s worth noting, however, that not all audio-visual content meets the same standard of credibility. A peer-reviewed video lecture series differs significantly from an informal YouTube explainer. As with print materials, the source, authorship, and purpose of the audio-visual content must be critically evaluated.

Web-based literature: vast but variable

The internet has become an unavoidable part of any literature search. It offers immediate access to a staggering volume of information – but that accessibility comes with a significant responsibility to evaluate what you find.

Online journals, databases, and e-books

Many of the most reputable academic publications now exist primarily or exclusively in digital form. Google Scholar indexes materials across disciplines – including articles, theses, books, and conference papers – making it a practical starting point for broad literature searches. However, it lacks the editorial selectivity of curated databases. For education-specific research, ERIC, JSTOR, Scopus, and Web of Science are more reliable because they apply stricter inclusion criteria. E-books hosted by academic publishers also count as credible web-based literature when sourced from verified publishers.

Government and institutional websites

Statistical data from government websites can serve as excellent sources for literature reviews, particularly when a researcher needs demographic or policy-related evidence. Websites with .gov and .edu domains – such as those from national education ministries, UNESCO, or universities – tend to be more reliable than commercial or anonymous sources. Harvard’s guide to evaluating web sources recommends checking whether the sponsoring organization is a recognized research center, college, or government office before relying on any web-based document.

Blogs, preprints, and professional association sites

These sources occupy a gray zone. A blog written by an education professor or a report from a well-respected think tank can offer timely, relevant perspectives – but such sources should make up no more than about 20% of a literature review, according to education research experts. Preprints – manuscripts posted before formal peer review – should be used cautiously and never treated as equivalent to published, reviewed research.

Choosing the right mix of sources

A strong literature review in educational research doesn’t rely on a single type of source. The foundation – ideally around 80% of your total sources – should come from peer-reviewed books and journals from reputable publishers. The remainder can include credible professional publications, reports from recognized institutions, and carefully vetted web-based content.

When evaluating any source – print, audio-visual, or web-based – a few key questions help anchor your judgment. Researchers are advised to check the author’s credentials and citation history, assess whether the publisher is peer-reviewed and indexed in reputable databases, and verify facts across multiple sources. Frameworks like CRAAP (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose) offer a structured way to apply this evaluation consistently across different source types.

Recency also matters. Educational research evolves quickly – particularly in areas touching on technology, curriculum policy, and pedagogy. Foundational texts remain important, but they should be complemented by recent studies that reflect where the field stands today. Combining print sources for theoretical grounding, audio-visual resources for real-world context, and web-based documents for current findings gives a literature review both depth and currency.

Key databases for educational literature searches

ERIC, the largest and most sophisticated database for education research, allows researchers to filter by publication type, peer-review status, and grade level – making it particularly powerful for systematic literature searches. Specialized databases like Scopus and Web of Science allow researchers to track how often a source has been cited, which is a useful indicator of its influence and credibility within the field. For broader interdisciplinary coverage, PsycINFO (for educational psychology) and JSTOR (for humanities and social science) round out the toolkit.

The U.S. Department of Education’s free version of ERIC at eric.ed.gov is particularly valuable for researchers in lower-resource settings, offering open access to hundreds of thousands of education-related documents without requiring institutional access.
