When a qualitative researcher spends months in a classroom observing teaching practices, conducts in-depth interviews with teachers, and then asks those same teachers to review what was written about them – that researcher is doing something very deliberate. They are building trustworthiness. In qualitative educational research, trustworthiness is the standard by which a study’s findings are judged as credible, reliable, and meaningful. Lincoln and Guba (1985), whose work remains foundational in this field, introduced four key criteria to evaluate trustworthiness: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Each criterion comes with specific strategies that researchers use to verify and demonstrate the quality of their work.

Why trustworthiness matters in qualitative research
Qualitative research does not aim to replicate results the way a chemistry experiment might. Unlike quantitative studies, qualitative research does not seek replicability – the events, participants, and contexts studied are understood to create unique circumstances. What qualitative researchers strive for instead is trustworthiness: giving readers enough confidence in what has been reported that the findings are worth taking seriously. Lincoln and Guba outline four criteria for establishing the overall trustworthiness of qualitative research results, and these criteria parallel the conventional quantitative benchmarks of internal validity, external validity, reliability, and objectivity – but are tailored to the interpretive nature of qualitative inquiry.
Credibility: are the findings believable?
Credibility means accurately reflecting participants’ views – it is concerned with whether the findings truthfully represent the realities of the people being studied. Credibility refers to the believability of study results to critical readers and participants. Think of it as the qualitative equivalent of internal validity. To achieve it, researchers rely on several specific strategies.
Prolonged engagement
Prolonged engagement in qualitative research refers to the researcher’s sustained involvement in the research context, spending an extended period actively observing, participating, and interacting with participants. Prolonged engagement means being present in the site long enough to build trust with participants, experience the breadth of variation, and overcome distortions due to the researcher’s own presence. In an educational setting, this might mean a researcher spending an entire academic year in a school rather than visiting for just a few days. The time investment allows hidden insights to surface and helps participants feel comfortable enough to share candidly.
Triangulation
Triangulation is one of the most widely used strategies for enhancing credibility. Triangulation involves using multiple methods, data sources, researchers, or theories to cross-check and validate findings. For example, a researcher studying classroom management might combine teacher interviews, direct observations, and student surveys – and where all three point to the same conclusion, confidence in that conclusion grows considerably. Triangulation verifies findings through multiple sources of information, methods of data collection, and observations with multiple researchers. There are several types: data triangulation (using multiple sources), methodological triangulation (using multiple methods), investigator triangulation (using multiple researchers), and theoretical triangulation (drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks).
Member checks
In qualitative research, a member check – also known as informant feedback or respondent validation – is a technique used by researchers to help improve the accuracy, credibility, validity, and transferability of a study. Practically, this means sharing interview summaries, themes, or draft interpretations with the original participants and asking: “Does this accurately reflect what you meant or experienced?” Member checking is a process through which qualitative researchers validate their interpretations and findings by consulting with the original participants of the study. In educational research, a teacher who reads the researcher’s interpretation of their classroom practice and confirms or corrects it adds a powerful layer of validation to the findings.
Peer debriefing
Peer debriefing is a valuable method for ensuring trustworthiness in qualitative research. It involves engaging in structured discussions with a peer or expert who provides critical feedback on various aspects of the research process, such as sampling, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The peer acts as a critical friend – someone outside the study who asks hard questions, challenges assumptions, and flags possible biases the researcher might have overlooked. Peer debriefing involves meeting with a disinterested peer to question methods, emerging conclusions, and biases. This keeps the researcher accountable and strengthens the overall integrity of the analysis.
Transferability: can the findings apply elsewhere?
Transferability addresses the applicability of the findings to similar contexts or individuals, not to broader contexts. It is not the same as generalizability in quantitative research. Rather than claiming that findings apply universally, the qualitative researcher provides enough contextual detail for readers – not the researcher – to judge whether the findings might be relevant to their own settings. The reader, not you, makes the transferability judgment because you do not know their specific settings.
The primary mechanism for achieving transferability is thick description – rich, detailed accounts of the research context, participants, setting, data collection procedures, and findings. Transferability is communicated, in part, through description of sampling factors such as geographical location of the study, number and characteristics of participants, and the timeframe of data collection and analysis. A researcher studying motivation among first-generation university students, for instance, should describe participant demographics, institutional context, and the socio-economic background in enough depth that educators in a different institution can assess whether the insights might apply to their own students.
Dependability: is the research process consistent and documented?
Dependability involves demonstrating that the research process is logical, traceable, and clearly documented. It parallels the concept of reliability in quantitative research. A dependable study is one where another researcher, following the same process, could reasonably arrive at comparable findings. Dependability comes from documenting your process clearly so others could replicate it.
The key tool here is the audit trail – a comprehensive, organized record of the entire research process. Lincoln and Guba recommend an independent auditor to review the audit trail in qualitative research for evaluating dependability and confirmability. An audit trail in educational research might include raw field notes, interview transcripts, coding decisions, memos about emerging themes, and reflective notes about methodological choices. The auditor who performed the dependability and confirmability audit should not be part of the research team, but an expert in the relevant methodology. This external audit provides an independent check on whether the analytical process was carried out consistently and systematically.
Confirmability: are the findings grounded in the data, not the researcher’s bias?
Confirmability ensures findings emerge from the data rather than researcher bias, through methods like audit trails and reflexivity. It is the qualitative parallel of objectivity. The question confirmability asks is: can someone else look at the data and trace how the researcher arrived at these conclusions? Confirmability attempts to show that the findings and interpretations do not derive from the imagination of the researchers but are clearly linked to the data.
Three main strategies support confirmability. First, reflexive journaling – where researchers regularly document their own assumptions, preconceptions, and emotional responses throughout the study – makes their positionality transparent. As a qualitative researcher, you have to acknowledge the importance of being self-aware and reflexive about your own role in the process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting the data. Second, peer debriefing (shared with credibility) also serves confirmability by exposing interpretations to external scrutiny. Third, the audit trail – which documents how codes were developed, how themes emerged, and how decisions were made – allows an external reviewer to verify that conclusions are data-driven rather than assumption-driven.
How the four criteria work together
The key criteria for ensuring the quality of qualitative research include credibility, achieved through extended involvement, persistent observation, and triangulation; transferability, achieved through comprehensive and detailed explanations; dependability, achieved through rigorous documentation and the creation of an audit trail; and confirmability, achieved through peer debriefing, member checking, and reflexive journaling. These criteria are not isolated checkboxes – they reinforce one another. Prolonged engagement, for example, strengthens credibility but also improves the richness of description that enables transferability. Triangulation supports credibility while simultaneously reducing the researcher bias that confirmability seeks to eliminate. Thick and rich descriptions, where robust descriptive language is used to provide sufficient contextual information, enable the reader to determine credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.
In qualitative educational research specifically, these strategies are essential. Teachers, school leaders, and policymakers need research they can trust before they act on it. A study exploring why students disengage from science, or how inclusion policies are experienced by classroom teachers, must be conducted with methodological rigour for its findings to carry weight. Trustworthy qualitative research findings are important for informing policy decisions and improving the provision of services in various fields.
Practical implications for researchers and educators
Building trustworthiness is not something done at the end of a study – it is woven into every stage. From designing the study and entering the field, through data collection and analysis, to writing and reporting, researchers must consistently ask: How am I ensuring that what I am reporting is credible? Have I documented my process clearly enough for others to follow? Are my interpretations driven by what participants actually said, or by what I expected them to say? The first step is to establish prolonged engagement with the data and triangulate different data collection modes, documenting both reflective thoughts and thoughts about potential themes. From there, peer debriefing, member checks, reflexive journaling, and maintaining a thorough audit trail all become ongoing practices, not one-off tasks.
For researchers in education, these strategies are especially meaningful because the participants – students, teachers, parents, and administrators – are real people whose experiences deserve to be represented with accuracy and care. Trustworthiness is ultimately about doing justice to those experiences.
