Every meaningful research study begins not with data or methodology – but with a problem. In educational research, identifying the right research problem is widely regarded as one of the most critical and intellectually demanding steps in the entire research process. It demands thorough thinking, careful searching, and disciplined speculation. Get it right, and the rest of the research journey has a clear compass. Get it wrong – or skip it too quickly – and even the most rigorous methods cannot save a study from irrelevance. So how exactly do researchers identify effective problems worth investigating in education? That question is worth unpacking carefully.

What is a research problem in education?

A research problem is, at its core, the specific issue or concern in a particular setting that motivates and guides the need for conducting a study. It is not the same as a research topic (which is broad) or a research question (which is narrow). The research problem sits between the two – it identifies what is wrong or unknown, without yet specifying exactly how you will investigate it.

In education, for a problem to qualify as a research problem, its pain and consequences must be clearly identifiable. A problem that causes no measurable impact – on students, teachers, or the educational system – is unlikely to yield research that matters. The consequences could be anything from low academic achievement and teacher burnout to high dropout rates or persistent gaps in learning outcomes.

It is equally important to understand what a research problem is not. It is not just a topic of personal curiosity. It is not an administrative complaint. And it is certainly not a vague dissatisfaction with “the way things are.” A sound research problem needs to be specific, grounded in evidence, and significant enough to warrant systematic investigation.

Why identifying the research problem is harder than it looks

Many new researchers underestimate this step. They assume that once they have a general interest area – say, student motivation or classroom technology – the research problem will naturally follow. It rarely does. While finding problems in education is easy, identifying a good research problem is not as simple as it may seem. The distinction matters enormously: a well-identified problem serves as the foundation for every decision that follows, from choosing a methodology to framing a literature review.

The challenge lies in the fact that identifying a research problem requires two things simultaneously: deep familiarity with the existing body of knowledge in the field, and a sharp eye for what that knowledge still leaves unanswered or unexplained. This combination of breadth and critical focus is difficult to develop quickly, which is why the identification stage demands patience and serious intellectual effort.

Key strategies for identifying a research problem

1. Start with a thorough literature review

The most structured entry point into identifying a research problem is a careful review of existing academic literature. By reading published studies, journal articles, and research reports, you begin to map what is already known – and, more importantly, what is not. Databases like ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) provide access to peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, and research reports that highlight emerging trends in education. Pay particular attention to the “Discussion” and “Future Research” sections of existing studies – this is often where researchers themselves point toward unresolved questions and areas that need further work.

A research gap – an unanswered question or unresolved problem in a field – is frequently the most productive starting point for a new study. A research gap can emerge when there is a new concept or phenomenon that has not been studied, when existing research is outdated, or when a specific population has not been adequately examined. Sometimes gaps also arise from disagreement in the literature: when different studies pull in opposite directions on the same question, that tension itself becomes a problem worth investigating.

2. Draw on professional experience and classroom observation

Not all research problems are born in libraries. Many of the most impactful educational studies have emerged from direct experience in classrooms, schools, and educational institutions. Professional experience – your own classroom interactions, observations from working with learners, or feedback from students and colleagues – can reveal gaps in practice that literature alone might not surface.

A teacher who notices that students consistently struggle with a particular concept, or an administrator who observes a pattern of underperformance in a specific demographic, is sitting on a potential research problem. For instance, a language teacher observing that students struggle with acquiring new vocabulary might be moved to formulate the problem: “What is the impact of implementing mnemonic strategies on EFL learners’ vocabulary retention?” This is a concrete, researchable problem grounded in lived professional reality.

3. Question existing assumptions

One of the most intellectually rigorous strategies – and one that is often underused – is the deliberate questioning of assumptions embedded in current educational practice or theory. Researchers call this “problematisation”: rather than simply looking for gaps, you examine the assumptions underlying existing knowledge and ask whether they still hold. This approach means challenging the assumptions of existing literature in the process of constructing research questions, with the aim of developing and improving theoretical shortcomings.

In practical terms, this might mean asking: Is the widely accepted relationship between class size and student performance actually borne out in all contexts? Do the teaching strategies recommended for high-resource schools work equally well in under-resourced settings? Questioning these assumptions does not mean dismissing prior research – it means taking it seriously enough to test it more rigorously.

Identifying a research problem is not a single moment of inspiration – it is a process of accumulation. Effective researchers gather facts, data points, observations, and informal findings from multiple sources before arriving at a well-formed problem. This might involve collecting statistics on student outcomes, reviewing policy documents, consulting government education reports, or compiling findings from multiple smaller studies.

Once facts are accumulated, the next step is to propose provisional explanations for the patterns you observe. Why might student absenteeism be rising in a particular district? What could explain the disparity in reading comprehension between students of different socioeconomic backgrounds? These provisional explanations – sometimes called hypotheses or hunches – help sharpen the research problem into something specific enough to investigate. Tools like fishbone diagrams and mind maps can support this analytical thinking by helping researchers trace problems to their root causes.

5. Engage with educational theory

Research problems that are grounded in theory tend to produce findings with broader significance. Psychological theories such as Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development or theories related to motivation, attention, and cognitive load are particularly valuable lenses for identifying research problems – especially in evolving contexts like online learning or technology-integrated classrooms. Theory does not just explain; it reveals where explanation is still missing.

A theoretical gap arises when existing models do not adequately account for observed phenomena, and closing that gap through focused research can contribute meaningfully to the field. For educational researchers, this means staying current not just with empirical studies, but with the theoretical frameworks that underpin them.

6. Consult the wider educational community

Professional discussions with colleagues, mentors, and educators – at conferences, seminars, or even in informal conversations – can surface emerging issues that have yet to find their way into the formal literature. What are practitioners struggling with right now? What challenges are being discussed repeatedly in teacher forums or policy briefings? These conversations often reveal problems that are urgent and practically significant, even if they have not yet been formally researched.

Criteria for a well-defined research problem

Once you have identified a candidate problem, it must be evaluated before you commit to it. A strong research problem in education should meet several key criteria:

Specificity: The problem must be narrow enough to be researchable. “How do students learn?” is a topic. “How does project-based learning affect critical thinking in high school students?” is a problem. Feasibility: Consider whether you can realistically access the data, participants, and resources required. Significance: The research should contribute to educational knowledge or practice – it must have value beyond the researcher’s specific situation and be worth sharing with the wider educational community. Grounding in knowledge: The problem must emerge from a deep engagement with the existing literature and real-world educational context – not from superficial familiarity with the topic.

Reflecting on the problem after identifying it is equally important – this allows you to establish its relevance and significance, and to articulate it with the clarity needed to guide your research questions and hypotheses.

Areas in education where research problems commonly emerge

Research problems in education are not confined to a single domain. They can surface across a wide range of areas, including curriculum design and implementation, assessment and evaluation practices, teacher professional development, equity and access in schooling, the integration of technology in learning, early childhood education, special education, language acquisition, and school leadership. Examples span everything from how socioeconomic factors influence access to quality education, to what classroom management strategies are most effective in diverse settings, to how standardised testing shapes student motivation and curriculum design.

What all these areas share is that they are connected to real people – students, teachers, families – and to outcomes that genuinely matter. The best research problems are those that are deeply rooted in this knowledge of the educational landscape, emerging not from abstract curiosity but from a meaningful engagement with the realities of teaching and learning.

From problem to research question: keeping the chain intact

Once a research problem is identified, it must be translated into a research purpose, and then into specific research questions. The research topic is the broadest aspect, the research question is the most focused aspect, and the purpose of this progression is to narrow and shape a study to make it feasible and relevant. Each step must flow logically from the last. A well-identified problem makes this chain of logic natural; a poorly identified one causes it to break down at every subsequent stage.

This is why researchers – especially those new to the process – are advised to invest disproportionate time and effort in this initial phase. The care taken in identifying and defining the research problem pays compounding dividends throughout the rest of the study.
