Educational research is a diverse and dynamic field. At its core, it seeks to answer one central question: what works in education, and why? But the path to answering that question isn’t a single road-it’s a network of distinct methodological routes, each designed for a different kind of inquiry. Whether a researcher wants to measure the impact of a new teaching strategy or understand the lived experiences of students in a rural school, the type of study they choose shapes everything-from how data is collected to what conclusions can be drawn. Broadly, educational research studies are classified into two major categories: quantitative and qualitative-each with its own distinct set of approaches.

The two broad categories of educational research

Quantitative research focuses on numerical data to measure variables and test hypotheses, while qualitative research explores subjective experiences and meanings through non-numerical means such as interviews, observations, and documents. A third category-mixed methods-integrates both, but the foundation of educational research rests on these two pillars. Understanding each category and its subtypes is essential for any educator, student, or policymaker engaging with research in the field.

Quantitative research studies

Quantitative research applies an objective approach, seeking to measure educational phenomena numerically and study the relationships or cause-and-effect between variables. It is the method of choice when precision, generalizability, and statistical evidence are the goals. The main quantitative study types used in educational research are experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, and survey research.

Experimental research

Experimental research is considered the most rigorous form of quantitative inquiry. Researchers look at the effects of a specific change in a teaching practice-called an intervention-by randomly assigning students to either a group receiving the intervention or a control group that does not. This random assignment is what sets true experimental research apart. Because the groups are statistically equivalent at the start, any difference in outcomes can be confidently attributed to the intervention itself. It is the only research design that allows researchers to make genuine causal claims. For example, a researcher might randomly assign students to two groups-one learning through collaborative peer activities and another through independent study-and then compare test scores.

Quasi-experimental research

In real educational settings, random assignment is often impractical or ethically problematic. That’s where quasi-experimental research steps in. Quasi-experimental design lies between the rigor of a true experiment and the flexibility of observational studies-it is often used when classic experimental designs are not feasible or ethical. The key distinction is that while an independent variable is still manipulated, participants are not randomly assigned to conditions. Because participants are not randomly assigned, quasi-experimental research does not eliminate the problem of confounding variables, making it lower in internal validity than a true experiment-but higher than purely observational methods. A classic educational example: a researcher tests a new anti-drug program by measuring student attitudes before and after the program in a single school, without a control group.

Correlational research

A correlational research design investigates relationships between two or more variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them. It can reveal whether variables move together-positively, negatively, or not at all-but it cannot prove that one caused the other. In education, correlational studies might examine whether class size is related to student performance, or whether attendance rates correlate with exam results. These studies are valuable for identifying patterns that warrant further investigation through more controlled designs. The important caveat: correlation does not imply causation.

Survey research

Survey research is one of the most widely used methods in education. It typically relies on questionnaires or structured interviews to gather data from large groups of people about their opinions, attitudes, behaviors, or experiences. Quantitative surveys pose fixed, closed-ended questions to receive numerical answers, making the data easy to analyze statistically. Because surveys can reach large and diverse samples relatively quickly and affordably, their findings tend to be highly generalizable. A researcher might survey thousands of teachers across a country to gauge attitudes toward a newly introduced curriculum reform.

Qualitative research studies

Qualitative research explores complex issues through strategies such as in-depth interviews, classroom observations, focus groups, case studies, and ethnographic research-uncovering findings that quantitative methods might overlook. Rather than generating statistics, it generates rich, contextual understanding. The main qualitative study types in educational research include case studies, documentary analysis, developmental research, ethnographic research, historical research, and philosophical research.

Case studies

A case study is an in-depth investigation of a specific individual, group, program, or institution within its real-world context. In educational research, case studies are particularly useful when a researcher wants to understand a unique or complex situation in detail-such as how a single school successfully implemented an inclusive education model despite limited resources. Qualitative researchers provide rich, thick descriptions for their readers and let their readers determine if the situation described applies to their own context. Data is typically gathered through observation, interviews, and document review, and the findings are highly contextual rather than broadly generalizable.

Documentary analysis

Documentary analysis involves systematically examining existing written, visual, or audiovisual materials to understand educational phenomena. These sources can include policy documents, textbooks, curriculum guides, official reports, photographs, or archival records. Documentary analysis is particularly useful in understanding the official frameworks and guidelines that shape educational systems and curricula. It is often used alongside other methods to triangulate findings or to trace how policies and practices have changed over time. For instance, a researcher might analyze decades of national curriculum documents to track shifts in how science is taught.

Developmental research

Developmental research focuses on studying growth and change over time. In educational contexts, this often means tracking how students’ skills, knowledge, attitudes, or behaviors evolve across months or years. Researchers conducting developmental studies might follow the same group of students over several years to track changes in learning outcomes or behaviors. This longitudinal approach provides insights into the long-term effects of educational interventions or environmental factors on student development. It is especially valuable in early childhood education, where developmental trajectories are closely observed.

Ethnographic research

Ethnographic research has its roots in anthropology and involves the researcher immersing themselves in a community or setting over an extended period to understand it from the inside. Ethnography is a qualitative approach that involves a process of living in and critically making sense of a culture as a complex and interrelated whole. In educational research, ethnographers might spend months in a classroom, school, or community, observing daily interactions, conducting informal interviews, and taking detailed field notes. Ethnographic research involves long-term engagement with those studied in order to understand their cultures and uses multiple methods of generating data. The goal is to understand how social and cultural dynamics shape educational experiences-questions that surveys and test scores simply cannot answer.

Historical research

Historical research examines past events, policies, and practices to shed light on current educational realities. In historical research, past events are studied to construct an in-depth understanding of them-including examining documents and artifacts as well as conducting interviews where possible. In the educational context, a historical study might investigate how colonial-era education policies shaped current literacy rates in a region, or how teacher training has evolved over the last century. By understanding the past, researchers can offer more nuanced interpretations of present-day challenges. Historical research is inherently interpretive and depends heavily on the quality and availability of primary sources.

Philosophical research

Philosophical research in education deals with fundamental questions about the nature of education, learning, and knowledge-exploring theoretical concepts that shape educational thought and practice. Unlike empirical research that collects data, philosophical research works through careful conceptual analysis, logical reasoning, and argumentation. It asks questions such as: What is the purpose of education? What does it mean to learn? What values should guide educational policy? While it may seem abstract, philosophical research has very practical implications-it underpins debates about curriculum design, the ethics of standardized testing, and the values embedded in educational systems. It often intersects with policy, drawing on ethical and political theory to critique or justify educational practices.

Choosing the right type of study

No single research method is superior to the others. Each exists because it answers a different kind of question. If little is known about a topic, a qualitative exploratory study may be most appropriate; if a hypothesis has already been developed, a quantitative approach may be needed to confirm or refine it. Quantitative studies-experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, and survey-are best suited when the goal is to measure, compare, or generalize. Qualitative studies-case studies, documentary analysis, developmental, ethnographic, historical, and philosophical-are best suited when the goal is to understand, interpret, or theorize. The choice ultimately depends on the research question, the available resources, and the kind of knowledge being sought.

It’s also worth noting that these categories are not rigid silos. Many contemporary educational researchers use mixed methods-combining, for example, a survey to capture broad trends with ethnographic observation to explain those trends in context. This pluralism reflects the complexity of education itself: a field that involves numbers and narratives, policies and people, measurement and meaning.

The diversity of research types in education is not a complication-it’s a strength. It means that almost every educational question, no matter how broad or how specific, has a methodological pathway that can address it rigorously and meaningfully.
