When embarking on educational research, one of the most critical – and often underestimated – steps is finding the right literature. Before you can contribute something new to a field, you need to know what has already been said. A systematic, well-planned literature search helps you avoid duplicating prior work, situate your study within existing scholarship, and build a solid theoretical foundation. Yet with an ever-expanding sea of published material, knowing where to look and how to look is the real challenge. This post walks through the key methods researchers use to search literature in education – from search engines and specialized databases to abstracting services and bibliographies.

Why a structured literature search matters

Literature search is a foundational step in any authentic research process – it helps formulate research questions, identify suitable methodologies, and spot gaps in existing knowledge. Without it, a researcher risks designing a study that has already been done, using outdated methods, or missing evidence that could reshape their entire approach. A literature search is not merely information collection – it is an engagement with the academic community, shaping research questions and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge. Given how much is at stake, the process deserves deliberate planning and the right tools.

Method 1: Search engines for academic literature

Search engines are the most common starting point for any literature search, and for good reason – they are accessible, fast, and broad in coverage.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is one of the most widely used free tools for academic searching. From one place, it allows researchers to search across disciplines and sources – articles, theses, books, abstracts, and court opinions – from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, and universities. It is particularly useful in the early stages of a literature review because it casts a wide net and surfaces related work quickly. Google Scholar also sorts results based on citation frequency, relevance, and the source publication, helping researchers locate highly cited work first.

For education researchers, linking Google Scholar to your institution’s library gives you access to full-text articles directly from the search results, saving significant time. However, because Google Scholar indexes content broadly without rigorous vetting, researchers should always verify source quality before relying on a result.

ERIC: the go-to engine for education research

ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) is an internet-based digital library of education research and information, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, providing access to bibliographic records of journal and non-journal literature from 1966 to the present. Its mission is to offer a comprehensive, easy-to-use, searchable database specifically for educators, researchers, students, and policymakers.

What makes ERIC particularly valuable is its education-specific architecture. It has easy-to-use options for narrowing searches, discovering related terms through its thesaurus, and exploring education-specific descriptors – for instance, selecting the level of education being researched or filtering by education laws and policies. ERIC covers both journal articles (through the Current Index to Journals in Education) and non-journal documents such as conference papers and reports. Notably, it is free to use through the government site at eric.ed.gov.

That said, database selection impacts the quality and rigor of evidence synthesis projects, and relying on ERIC alone may mean missing literature covered only in other databases. A comprehensive search in education should ideally combine ERIC with broader resources.

Method 2: Abstracting and indexing services

Abstracting and indexing (A&I) services occupy a special place in the literature search toolkit. They do something search engines do not – they systematically process, summarize, and organize published research, making it easier for researchers to locate and evaluate relevant documents without reading entire papers from scratch.

What these services do

An indexing and abstracting service provides shortening or summarizing of documents and assigns descriptors for referencing them. The product is often an abstracts journal or a bibliographic index, which may take the form of a subject bibliography or a bibliographic database.

Abstracting services play a vital role in helping researchers identify required documents, understand the contents of documents even in unfamiliar languages, reduce scanning time, survey retrospective literature rapidly, and get a picture of new developments in a subject field. In practice, this means a researcher can scan hundreds of abstracts quickly to determine which full papers are worth pursuing – a crucial efficiency when facing thousands of search results.

Key A&I services for education researchers

Several major A&I services are relevant to educational research. Scopus, offered by Elsevier, is a large abstract and citation database covering peer-reviewed journals, trade publications, and book series across science, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Its specialist features include cited reference searching, which allows researchers to trace how a piece of work has been built upon over time.

PsycINFO, published by the American Psychological Association, is essential for education researchers working in learning, cognition, or educational psychology. It provides information on interdisciplinary behavioral and social science literature, covering document types such as journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, and editorials, with over 4 million bibliographic records from more than 2,500 scholarly journals.

Web of Science is another major interdisciplinary resource. It provides cited reference searching, a unique feature that lets users track the literature forward, backward, and through the database, breaking through disciplinary and geographic boundaries and enabling multidisciplinary searches to discover hidden subject relationships.

Education Source (available via EBSCO) is a dedicated education database with coverage of early childhood through higher education, multilingual education, health education, testing, curriculum, and education policy. It includes over 2,095 active indexed and abstracted journals, of which 1,857 are peer-reviewed, plus full-text conference papers and teacher training videos.

One key advantage of A&I services is that they use controlled vocabularies – standardized subject headings that group together articles using different terminology for the same concept. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), for example, is the National Library of Medicine’s controlled hierarchical vocabulary used for indexing articles in PubMed, allowing researchers to retrieve citations that use different terminology for identical ideas. Education-specific databases use similar thesaurus-based systems, which makes searches more precise and less dependent on guessing the exact words an author used.

Method 3: Bibliographies

Bibliographies are among the oldest and most reliable methods for locating relevant literature. A bibliography is a compiled list of sources on a particular topic or by a particular author, often annotated with descriptions of each work’s content or significance.

Types of bibliographies used in research

In educational research, bibliographies serve multiple functions. Subject bibliographies compile references focused on a single topic or discipline – for example, a bibliography of research on inclusive education or on assessment practices in higher education. These are valuable because they represent the curated judgment of subject experts, often capturing sources that a keyword search might miss.

Annotated bibliographies go further by providing a brief summary and evaluation of each source. They help researchers quickly gauge whether a given work is relevant to their specific question and can serve as a roadmap when entering an unfamiliar area of research.

Citation searching – sometimes treated as a form of tracing bibliographic chains – is a powerful method in its own right. Citation searching helps researchers find out whether articles have been cited by other authors, find more recent papers on the same subject, and discover how a known idea or innovation has been confirmed, applied, improved, extended, or corrected. Starting with one highly relevant paper and following its citations – both backward (its references) and forward (who has cited it since) – helps build a web of related literature that keyword searching alone might not surface.

Many major databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar support citation tracking. Basic citation searching involves tracking references that have cited, or listed in their bibliography, an article, book, or book chapter – also known as cited reference searching.

Method 4: Combining search strategies for best results

No single method is sufficient on its own. Searching the literature is not a straightforward, linear process – it is iterative, meaning researchers search multiple times, modifying their strategies as they go. Effective researchers typically combine multiple methods: starting with a broad search on Google Scholar or ERIC, refining results using A&I services with controlled vocabularies, and then following citation trails from key papers to find additional sources.

Keyword construction and Boolean operators

Across all methods, keyword selection is fundamental. To develop a search strategy, researchers identify key words and concepts within their research question and treat each component as a separate concept, listing key words and synonyms for each. These are then combined using Boolean operators: AND narrows a search by retrieving records containing all specified terms; OR broadens it by retrieving records with any of the terms; and NOT excludes irrelevant results.

Techniques like truncation (using an asterisk to capture word variations – for example, educat* retrieves education, educator, educational) and phrase searching (using quotation marks to search for exact phrases like “formative assessment”) further sharpen results. Keeping track of searches saves time, as researchers can rerun them, store references, and set up regular alerts for new research relevant to their topic.

Supplementary sources researchers often overlook

Many researchers tend to focus only on published journals and books, but other sources are invaluable and often overlooked – including conference proceedings, ongoing research at university labs, online discussion forums, databases of high-quality pre-print material, and postdoctoral theses. Grey literature such as government reports, policy documents, and international organization publications can also contain significant findings that never appear in peer-reviewed journals.

A comprehensive literature search should be conducted to review all potentially valuable information. Published literature provides background support to indicate what is known about a specific area, and also assists in identifying the needs or unknowns in the particular area of study. Taking the time to explore multiple source types not only strengthens the review but also demonstrates methodological rigor to reviewers and committees.

Drawing on guidance from major research libraries and information scientists, here are key practices that make the entire process more manageable. First, start broad, then narrow – use a general search to understand the terrain of your topic before applying filters. Second, use multiple databases rather than relying on a single source; different databases cover different journals and document types. Third, record your search process – note which databases you used, which keywords you searched, and what filters you applied. This documentation is required when writing up your methodology and allows you to replicate or refine searches later.

Fourth, use reference management tools such as Zotero or EndNote to organize sources as you find them – these save considerable time during the writing phase. Fifth, begin with the most recent publications and work backward, as starting with the most recent issues of journals and looking for studies about your topic, then working backward in time, ensures you capture the current state of the field before tracing its history.
