Every meaningful educational study begins not with data or methods, but with a question. A good research question is the single most important sentence you will write in your entire study – it defines what you are looking for, where you will look, and how you will look for it. Yet many researchers, especially those new to educational inquiry, skip this step too quickly, moving from a vague concern straight into data collection. The result is almost always a study that lacks direction and produces findings too scattered to be useful. Understanding how to formulate a precise, well-scoped research question is the skill that separates productive educational research from research that simply goes in circles.

That observation becomes a problem statement: “Students in urban secondary schools demonstrate declining mathematics achievement, yet the factors contributing to this decline remain poorly understood.” This is accurate and important – but it is still too broad to guide a study. They often begin with “how” or “why” – words that require the researcher to examine relationships, patterns, or mechanisms rather than just report facts. Relevant: The question should address a genuine gap or issue in the field of education. It must matter – either to practitioners who will use the findings or to the body of academic knowledge being built.

Not all research questions are structured the same way – and they should not be. The type of question a researcher asks signals the type of study that will follow. Getting the type right is essential.
Descriptive questions
These questions ask “what is happening?” They seek to document and describe a phenomenon as it exists. They are a useful starting point when a topic is under-researched and the field needs a clearer picture of the current situation before moving to explanations or interventions.
Relational or correlational questions

Step 1: Identify the area of concern
Begin by identifying what you actually want to know and why. This often comes from observations in practice, gaps noticed during a literature review, or questions raised by existing research findings.
Step 2: Do preliminary reading

The goal at this stage is not to conduct a full literature review, but to familiarize yourself with the key debates in the area so your question does not duplicate existing work and is positioned within the existing knowledge base.

Ask yourself: which aspect of this broad problem do I actually want to investigate? What is the specific setting? Who are the participants? What is the timeframe? One useful framework is FINER: Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, Relevant.
