Education is often spoken of as a single, unified activity – something that happens in classrooms, between teachers and students, with textbooks and tests. But this picture is far too simple. When researchers and educators look closely at what education actually is, they encounter something far more layered: a set of phenomena that are simultaneously personal and social, structured and emergent, disciplinary and interdisciplinary. Understanding the complex nature of educational processes is not merely an academic exercise. It shapes how we design schools, train teachers, develop curricula, and ultimately, how we think about human growth and societal progress.

Education as an intrinsic human process
At its most fundamental level, education is intrinsic to human existence. It is not an add-on to life – it is woven into how human beings develop, relate to others, and make sense of the world. Holistic education philosophy, rooted in thinkers like John Dewey, Maria Montessori, and Paulo Freire, holds that learning should develop the whole person – intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, and creatively. Education, under this view, is not simply the delivery of information. It is a formative process that shapes not just what people know, but who they become.
This intrinsic quality of education means it cannot be reduced to a narrow set of measurable outcomes. Research on education’s transformative dimensions suggests that beyond academic knowledge, it provides opportunities for personal growth, civic engagement, and the capacity to connect and leverage insights across disciplines. These are qualities that purely economic or outcome-based thinking tends to miss – yet they lie at the very heart of what makes education meaningful.
The action-oriented nature of education
Education is not passive. It is fundamentally action-oriented – oriented toward change, both in individuals and in the broader society they inhabit. Education and societal transformation are deeply linked: formal education helps learners internalize values, develop social norms, and acquire the capacities they need to contribute to collective life. In this sense, education is a deliberate intervention – it is designed to make things better.
This action-orientation is visible at multiple levels. At the individual level, education builds confidence, critical thinking, problem-solving capacity, and emotional regulation. At the societal level, educated citizens are more likely to engage in civic life, challenge inequitable norms, and drive innovation. The dual mandate of education – to develop the individual and to serve society – is what makes it such a high-stakes endeavor, and also what makes studying it so complex.
UNESCO’s framework for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) captures this dual mandate directly, describing transformative education as one that enables the “great individual and societal transformation” required to address contemporary challenges. It calls for an “action-oriented, transformative pedagogy” that supports self-directed learning, problem-orientation, and interdisciplinarity – recognizing that education cannot be siloed from the broader world it seeks to change.
Why educational phenomena are inherently complex
One of the key insights in educational research is that the phenomena education deals with – learning, motivation, development, instruction – do not behave in simple, linear ways. Complexity theory applied to education posits that educational phenomena are context-bound, dynamic, and non-linear, emerging from interactions within and across multiple systems. A student’s learning outcomes, for instance, cannot be predicted simply by knowing the quality of teaching or the content of the curriculum. They emerge from the interplay of cognitive factors, emotional states, family context, peer relationships, institutional culture, and more.
This complexity has important methodological implications. Researchers have noted that most standard quantitative tools in education – statistical models, differential equations – are linear tools that work by breaking a system into its parts. But emergent phenomena in educational systems tend to have non-linear properties; the patterns at the macro-level often have different properties from their constituent micro-level parts. In other words, you cannot fully understand a classroom by simply studying individual students in isolation.
Educational phenomena can be captured at multiple levels of analysis – like cells within organs within bodies – addressing both individual and interpersonal characteristics simultaneously. Students bring competing cognitive and affective factors to any learning situation, and these interact dynamically with classroom environments, instructional choices, and broader institutional conditions. This nested complexity is not a complication to be eliminated; it is a defining feature of education that any serious inquiry must account for.
The multidisciplinary nature of education
Because education touches on human development in its broadest sense, it naturally draws from a wide range of academic disciplines. As Davis and Sumara observe, the field of education has a long history of importing theoretical frames and methodological approaches from other domains – educational psychology, educational philosophy, educational sociology, and subject-specific pedagogies. This is not a weakness; it reflects the genuinely cross-cutting nature of educational questions.
The multidisciplinary character of education is most visible in three overlapping areas: curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Curriculum: the structured core of educational experience
Curriculum is the backbone of any educational system. But designing a curriculum is far from straightforward. The OECD’s Education 2030 framework asserts that curriculum should shift from being “predetermined and static” to “adaptable and dynamic,” capable of reflecting evolving societal requirements alongside individual learning needs. Curriculum development thus involves not only subject matter experts but also educators, policymakers, psychologists, and communities – making it inherently interdisciplinary.
A progressive curriculum aims to develop skills and dispositions that allow students to realize their individual potential while also contributing to society as engaged citizens. This dual aim requires curriculum designers to balance content knowledge with competencies like critical thinking, collaboration, and civic awareness – drawing on developmental psychology, social theory, and domain-specific expertise simultaneously.
Instruction: where disciplines meet the learner
Instruction is where the breadth of education’s multidisciplinary nature becomes most immediately visible. Interdisciplinary and cross-curricular teaching integrates multiple subjects to foster deeper understanding, encouraging students to see the connections between domains and apply their knowledge to real-world contexts. Effective instruction draws from cognitive psychology (to understand how learners process information), sociology (to understand group dynamics and classroom culture), and technology (to expand the tools available for engagement).
Research on interdisciplinary thematic learning has found that multidisciplinary programs can boost students’ cognition, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Interdisciplinary learning functions to break through academic boundaries, helping students form structured knowledge that connects across domains – preparing them to tackle complex problems that rarely respect disciplinary borders.
Assessment: measuring what matters
Assessment is the third critical component of educational practice – and perhaps the most contested. The challenge is that what education aims to develop (critical thinking, emotional intelligence, civic values, creativity) is often difficult to measure through standardized instruments. Research on project-based learning shows that students who engage in authentic, interdisciplinary tasks often perform as well as or better than their peers on conventional measures – and significantly better on measures of higher-order thinking. This suggests that assessment must evolve to capture the full range of educational outcomes, not just those that are easiest to quantify.
Authentic assessment systems – portfolios, performance tasks, and formative feedback – are better aligned with the complex, developmental nature of educational processes. They acknowledge that growth is not linear and that learning cannot always be reduced to a single score.
Education for individual growth and societal improvement
Ultimately, the complex nature of educational processes reflects a dual purpose that has animated educational thought across cultures and centuries: education must serve both the individual and the collective. Holistic education frames this explicitly, aiming to nurture the development of the whole person while also fostering the relational, community-oriented dimensions of learning. Thinkers including Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Paulo Freire highlighted self-actualization, learner-centered pedagogy, and education as a means of personal and social transformation – converging on the idea that developing the individual and improving society are not competing goals but deeply interconnected ones.
This is why educational research cannot afford to be reductive. Researchers have argued that it is essential to engage in critical and reflective discourse about the nature of education and conceptual frameworks – not just about methods and outcomes. Education, approached holistically, is not simply a mechanism for producing skilled workers or passing examinations. It is the primary means through which human beings grow into their full potential and through which societies renew and improve themselves.
Recognizing this complexity does not make educational research harder for the sake of it. It makes research more honest – and ultimately, more useful – by ensuring that our understanding of education matches the rich, dynamic, multidimensional reality of what actually happens when people learn.
