What does it really mean to “understand” something in education? A test score can tell you that a student struggled, but it rarely tells you why. A classroom observation record can note that a teacher used a particular method, but it doesn’t capture how students actually experienced it. This is precisely the gap that qualitative research fills. Rooted in human experience, meaning-making, and context, qualitative research in education goes beyond numbers to explore the layered, complex realities of teaching and learning. Understanding its key features is essential for anyone who wants to study education in a way that stays close to what actually happens in classrooms, schools, and communities.

What qualitative research actually is

According to StatPearls (NCBI), qualitative research explores and provides deeper insights into real-world problems by gathering participants’ experiences, perceptions, and behaviors – answering the “hows” and “whys” rather than “how many” or “how much.” In educational settings, this means studying phenomena like student motivation, teacher-student dynamics, classroom culture, and the lived experiences of learners in ways that standardized tests and surveys simply cannot capture.

Unlike quantitative research, which follows a structured hypothesis-testing model, qualitative research is hypothesis-generating – it builds understanding from the ground up, making it especially suited to exploring complex, human-centered questions in education. Qualitative data is often described as “soft” – rich in description of people, places, and conversations, and not easily handled by statistical procedures.

Multiple realities, not one single truth

One of the most foundational features of qualitative research is its rejection of a single, fixed reality. The qualitative researcher embraces the ontological assumption of multiple truths – that persons understand reality in different ways reflecting individual perspectives. In education, this is particularly significant. Two students sitting in the same classroom, taught by the same teacher, can have entirely different experiences of that learning environment depending on their background, prior experiences, cultural context, and relationship with the teacher.

Consider a study on classroom discipline. One student may perceive a teacher’s firm approach as fair and structured; another may experience it as intimidating or culturally unfamiliar. Both perceptions are valid and real. Interpretivist paradigm research, which underpins much qualitative work, holds that because human behavior is so complex, it cannot be studied through probabilistic models – knowledge can only be created by interpreting the meanings that people attach to their behaviors and events.

Meanings and interpretations at the center

Qualitative research is not just interested in what happened – it is deeply concerned with what events mean to the people involved. Qualitative researchers believe that multiple ways of interpreting experiences are available through interaction with others, and that the meaning of experiences constitutes reality – reality, consequently, is socially constructed.

In an educational context, this means a researcher studying online learning, for example, would not simply count how many students completed assignments. They would conduct interviews or focus groups to understand how students interpret their online learning experience – what it feels like, what barriers they encounter, and what meaning they attach to independent digital study. This focus on subjective meaning gives qualitative research its depth and analytical richness.

The role of interpretation in knowledge production

Qualitative research is, at its core, interpretive. This methodology is constructive or interpretive in nature, aiming to unveil the “what,” “why,” “when,” “where,” “who,” and “how” behind social behaviors and interactions. The researcher is not a neutral bystander – they actively interpret data through their own lens, and this subjectivity is acknowledged rather than hidden. In education research, this might mean a teacher-researcher recognizing that their own classroom experience shapes how they read and analyze interview transcripts from students.

Knowledge generated through interaction

Qualitative research doesn’t extract data from participants – it generates knowledge through them. The process is collaborative and relational. The researcher-participant relationship is intersubjective – the researcher is the listener and interpreter of the data obtained from the participant, discovering understanding through thinking and analysis rather than detached observation.

This is typically done through in-depth interviews, focus groups, or participant observation, where the researcher actively engages with participants. A teacher-researcher interviewing students, for instance, learns not only about their academic experiences but about how students interpret the teacher’s own actions – a dynamic, two-way exchange that enriches the data. These realities are constructed through interactions rather than discovered, which reflects the fundamentally social nature of knowledge in qualitative inquiry.

Inductive reasoning and grounded theory

Because qualitative research builds understanding from the data rather than from pre-set hypotheses, it typically uses an inductive approach. Abstractions are developed as the details acquired are brought together – the theory is created from the ground up. In educational research, this allows findings to emerge organically from the experiences of students and teachers, rather than being forced into pre-existing theoretical boxes. This is particularly valuable when exploring new or under-studied educational phenomena.

The centrality of context

Context is not background noise in qualitative research – it is central to the inquiry. Qualitative research exposes the factors influencing outcomes, painting a more complete picture of cause and effect. Numbers can be misleading without context, and qualitative research ensures that the circumstances, relationships, and environments surrounding a phenomenon are fully taken into account.

A student’s academic disengagement, for example, might look like laziness in a quantitative dataset. But in a qualitative study, context reveals something far more nuanced – perhaps the student is navigating a difficult home environment, cultural alienation in the classroom, or a learning style that simply doesn’t match the teaching approach in use. Qualitative research focuses on answering “how” and “why” questions, understanding a phenomenon within its context – which is exactly what educational settings require.

The naturalistic setting

Qualitative researchers go to where the action is. Qualitative research has actual settings as the direct source of data, and the researcher is the key instrument. Researchers enter schools, classrooms, staff rooms, and communities – spending considerable time learning about educational concerns from within those environments. This naturalistic approach ensures that data reflects real conditions rather than controlled or artificial ones.

This also means the researcher themselves becomes the primary tool for data collection and analysis. Their insight, attentiveness, and reflective capacity are what transform observations into understanding. Unlike a questionnaire or a measuring instrument, the qualitative researcher responds to context in real time – probing deeper when something unexpected emerges, adjusting questions based on participant responses, and remaining open to new directions.

Subjectivity and the interpretive stance

Subjectivity in qualitative research is not a flaw to be minimized – it is a recognized feature to be managed with transparency. Qualitative research is deeply subjective, valuing individual perspectives and the context in which those perspectives are formed. Researchers are often involved in the research process, shaping questions and interpreting findings based on their understanding of participants’ experiences.

In a qualitative paradigm, researchers interact with the study objects to collect observations, which are highly context-specific. This differs fundamentally from the positivist model, where study objects are kept independent of researchers and context is controlled. In qualitative work, the researcher’s perspective is part of the data – which is why reflexivity (critically examining one’s own role and assumptions) is considered an essential practice.

Process over generalization

Qualitative research is less concerned with producing findings that can be generalized to large populations and more focused on understanding the depth and texture of a specific phenomenon or setting. Results from qualitative research are assumed to apply to the small groups studied, and generalizability to other populations is not the primary expectation. Instead, the goal is transferability – offering rich enough description of a context that others can judge whether the findings resonate with their own situations.

In education, this means a qualitative study on first-generation college students in one institution may not statistically represent all such students globally, but it provides insights that educators and policymakers elsewhere can reflect on and apply contextually. The emphasis is on the process of how things unfold, rather than on producing universal rules. One of the strengths of qualitative research is its ability to explain processes and patterns of human behavior that can be difficult to quantify – and in education, human behavior is everything.

Holistic, flexible, and descriptively rich

A final defining feature is that qualitative research takes a holistic approach – it considers the whole picture rather than isolated variables. It is also inherently flexible. Unlike quantitative designs that follow a rigid methodology, qualitative research allows researchers to adapt based on what they discover along the way. This is particularly useful in dynamic educational settings where unexpected developments – a classroom conflict, a policy change, a shift in student mood – can reveal important data if the researcher is open to them.

The data produced is rich and descriptive. Through interviews, observations, focus groups, and document analysis, qualitative researchers build dense, layered accounts of educational life. This rich data helps researchers see the bigger picture and make informed decisions – informing teaching strategies, school policies, curriculum design, and teacher training in ways that purely numerical data cannot.
