In educational research, this starting point is not just a formality – it is the foundation upon which everything else is built. The problem you select shapes your research questions, your methodology, and ultimately, the value your study adds to the field. Yet many researchers, especially those just starting out, underestimate just how much thought and care goes into identifying and understanding the nature of a research problem. So what exactly makes a problem a research problem, and why does its nature matter so deeply?

What is a research problem?
At its core, a research problem is a specific issue, difficulty, or gap in knowledge that a researcher sets out to address through systematic investigation. It is not simply any question or curiosity – it is a focused concern that demands evidence-based inquiry. A critical distinction to keep in mind is that not every problem encountered in education qualifies as a research problem. A genuine research problem must have an identifiable issue, a pain it causes – such as stress, low self-esteem, or missed learning – and a broader educational consequence, such as low academic achievement or increased dropout rates.
Why the choice of problem matters
Selecting a well-defined and meaningful research problem is not just the first step – it is the most consequential one. A properly chosen problem does several important things simultaneously.
First, it guides your methodology. The nature of the problem directly determines whether you will use quantitative or qualitative approaches – or both. A problem focused on measuring the effectiveness of an instructional strategy calls for numerical data and statistical methods; a problem exploring teachers’ lived classroom experiences demands a qualitative, interpretive lens.

Practical experience and observation
Direct experience in educational settings is one of the most reliable sources of authentic problems. Descriptive problems

Relational problems are concerned with understanding the connections between variables. They ask: does one factor relate to another? These problems typically lead to hypotheses that can be tested using statistical methods, making them a natural fit for quantitative research designs.
Causal-comparative problems

What makes a problem truly researchable?
Not every educational concern meets the bar for a formal research problem. A researchable problem must satisfy several criteria. It must be clearly defined – vague or overly broad problems produce unfocused studies. It must be empirically investigable, meaning it can be studied through observable evidence, not just philosophical argument. The goal, always, is to find the niche – the place in the existing conversation where your study can add something genuinely new.
