Every skill you have – reading, problem-solving, riding a bicycle, managing a classroom – was once unknown to you. At some point, through experience, practice, or observation, it became part of who you are. That transformation is what we call learning. It is one of the most fundamental processes in human life, and understanding it deeply is essential for anyone engaged in education. But what exactly is learning? Is it simply gaining new information, or is there something far more complex happening beneath the surface?

What is learning? Definition and core meaning

Learning is broadly defined as the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behavior, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. But the psychological definition goes a step further. According to the Washington State University Open Psychology Text, learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge that results from experience. The word “relatively permanent” is important – it distinguishes learning from temporary shifts caused by fatigue, mood, or medication. And the phrase “results from experience” separates learning from instincts or reflexes, which are innate and require no prior exposure.

A more formal psychological definition comes from Gregory Kimble (1961), as noted on Encyclopedia.com: learning is a relatively permanent change in a behavioral tendency that occurs as a result of reinforced practice. Kimble’s definition is precise – it rules out behavioral changes caused by maturation, motivational fluctuations, or forgetting, and deliberately includes the word “tendency” to account for situations where learning occurs but may not immediately appear in visible performance. A student might understand a concept in class and only demonstrate it weeks later during an exam. That gap between learning and performance is central to the psychology of learning.

Research published in the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review offers a functional definition: learning consists of changes in the behavior of an organism that result from regularities in the environment. This view positions learning as the individual’s adaptation to their surroundings over the course of their lifetime – a process of ongoing calibration between the person and the world they inhabit.

Examples of learning in daily life

Learning is not confined to classrooms. It permeates every stage of human life and takes many forms. Consider a child who touches a hot surface – the immediate pain creates a lasting change in behavior, ensuring that child avoids the same surface in future. That is a single-event learning experience. At the other end of the spectrum, a person learning to drive a car goes through weeks of repeated practice before the skill becomes automatic. Both count as learning, even though one happened in a moment and the other over months.

Learning also shapes attitudes and values – not just skills. A person raised in an environment that emphasizes honesty will develop that value through repeated social reinforcement. A student who receives consistent encouragement from a teacher may develop a positive attitude toward a subject they previously avoided. As the Wikipedia entry on learning notes, the process covers not just knowledge and behavior but also values, attitudes, and preferences – all of which are modified through experience.

Observational learning is another common form. Children model the behavior of parents and peers without any explicit instruction. A younger sibling learns table manners by watching the older one. A trainee teacher learns classroom management by observing an experienced colleague. This kind of learning – watching and then replicating – is deeply woven into everyday social life.

Psychological and physiological aspects of learning

The role of the brain and neuroplasticity

Learning is not just a psychological event – it is a biological one. Every time we learn something new, the brain physically changes. According to the University of Pennsylvania’s LPS Online, neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Practicing a musical instrument, learning a new language, or working through a complex problem all strengthen neural pathways, demonstrating that the brain is dynamic, not fixed.

Neurotransmitters play a critical role in this process. Dopamine – the brain’s reward chemical – drives motivation and reinforces behavior when we accomplish something meaningful. As the Penn LPS article explains, when we achieve a goal, dopamine is released, encouraging us to repeat the behavior. This explains why learners who experience early success in a subject tend to stay more engaged with it over time.

Research from a PMC study on neuroscience in education confirms that an enriched learning environment – one that includes adequate sleep, nutrition, cognitive challenge, and emotional safety – directly supports neuroplasticity. Conversely, stress and a lack of stimulation can slow down the brain’s capacity for new learning. This is not abstract theory; it is biology with direct implications for how classrooms should be designed and managed.

Motivation and intelligence as factors

Psychological factors shape how learning happens just as strongly as physiological ones. According to the NIH’s StatPearls resource on learning theories, motivation plays a critical role in initiating and sustaining learning – it is described as the driving force that starts and maintains goal-directed activity. Without motivation, even the most capable learner will not engage deeply with material.

Motivation itself can be intrinsic (driven by genuine interest or satisfaction) or extrinsic (driven by external rewards or consequences). Both influence learning outcomes, though intrinsic motivation tends to produce deeper and more durable learning. Intelligence, too, contributes – but not as a fixed ceiling. As Social Sci LibreTexts notes, intelligence is dynamic rather than fixed, changing with development, experience, and health. A growth mindset – the belief that learning capacity can be developed – has been consistently linked to better academic outcomes and greater motivation.

Learning as an active process

One of the most significant shifts in the psychology of learning is the move away from viewing learners as passive recipients of information. Modern understanding firmly positions learning as an active process in which the learner engages, constructs, and internalizes meaning.

The University at Buffalo’s CATT resource explains that as people experience the world and reflect on those experiences, they build their own representations and incorporate new information into their existing knowledge structures (called schemas). New information is either assimilated – fitted into what is already known – or it triggers accommodation, where existing understanding is revised to make sense of the new experience. Both processes are active, not passive.

The environment shapes this process significantly. Social constructivism, as Wikipedia’s philosophy of education entry explains, emphasizes that the environment in which learning takes place plays a crucial role. A learner does not operate in isolation – their social context, cultural background, and the quality of their interactions with peers and teachers all influence what and how deeply they learn.

John Dewey, one of the most influential voices in educational philosophy, argued that education must be grounded in real experience. He insisted that learning is most effective when students are encouraged to explore, question, and problem-solve – not just listen and memorize. This experiential, student-centered view of learning remains central to constructivist pedagogy practiced in schools around the world today.

Theoretical perspectives on learning

Behaviorism: learning as observable change

Behaviorism, as described by Simply Psychology, is a theoretical perspective that views all behaviors as learned through conditioned interaction with the environment. Learning, in this framework, is a response to external stimuli. Ivan Pavlov’s classical conditioning demonstrated how a neutral stimulus, when repeatedly paired with a natural trigger, could produce a learned response – his famous experiments with dogs showed that animals (and by extension, humans) learn associations between events in their environment.

B.F. Skinner extended this with operant conditioning, showing that behavior is shaped by its consequences – reinforcement increases a behavior, while punishment reduces it. As explained by National University, behaviorist principles have direct classroom applications: praising a student for correct answers reinforces that behavior; consistent routines help establish productive habits. The limitation of this perspective, however, is that it focuses exclusively on observable behavior and does not account for internal thought processes.

Cognitivism: learning as information processing

Cognitivism moved the focus inward. Rather than measuring only external behavior, it examined what happens inside the mind. According to NIH’s StatPearls, cognitivism places emphasis on the individual’s thought processes and the internal reorganization of information. Learning, here, is the result of how the brain processes and restructures new information in relation to what was already known. Teachers working from a cognitivist framework focus on how material is presented, sequenced, and connected to prior knowledge.

Constructivism: learning as active knowledge-building

Constructivism, rooted in the work of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, argues that learners actively build their understanding rather than simply receive it. ELM Learning’s overview of constructivism highlights that each learner develops their own understanding through experience and reflection – not by passively absorbing facts from an external source. Vygotsky added the social dimension: meaningful learning occurs within the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) – the space between what a learner can do alone and what they can achieve with guidance from a more knowledgeable peer or teacher.

Together, these three theoretical traditions – behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism – offer complementary lenses through which learning can be understood and supported. No single theory explains everything, but each contributes essential insights. As Western Governors University notes, effective education draws on multiple frameworks, combining structured reinforcement with meaningful engagement and active problem-solving.

Why understanding learning matters for educators

For educators, understanding the concept of learning is not merely academic – it has direct practical consequences. A teacher who knows that motivation drives neural engagement will find ways to make content personally relevant. A teacher who understands neuroplasticity will recognize that students are not limited by fixed intelligence and will design experiences that stretch and develop learners. A teacher who grasps the active nature of learning will move away from lecture-only delivery toward methods that require students to engage, reflect, and apply.

Learning begins at birth and, as the Wikipedia article on learning states, continues until death as a consequence of ongoing interactions between people and their environment. Educators who understand this will see their role not as delivering a fixed body of content, but as creating conditions in which continuous, meaningful change in the learner can take place.
