Every teacher has faced a moment where a question lands in the room and is met with silence. Students sit, unsure whether their ideas are “good enough” to say out loud. Brainstorming is the teaching technique designed to break exactly that pattern. It is a structured method for generating a large number of ideas in a short period of time, where every contribution is welcomed and judgment is deliberately suspended. Far from being a casual “let’s discuss” activity, brainstorming – when implemented well – is one of the most effective tools a teacher has for building critical thinking, creativity, and genuine collaboration in the classroom.

What is brainstorming?
Brainstorming is a creativity technique in which a group of people interact to suggest ideas spontaneously in response to a prompt. The focus is placed on the volume and variety of ideas, including ones that may seem unusual or unconventional. Ideas are noted down as they emerge but are not assessed or critiqued until the session ends. This suspension of judgment is not incidental – it is the defining feature of the technique.
The term was coined by advertising executive Alex F. Osborn, who first introduced the concept in his 1953 book Applied Imagination. Frustrated by employees’ inability to come up with creative solutions in conventional meetings, Osborn began hosting group-thinking sessions where all ideas were welcomed without criticism. He quickly observed a significant improvement in both the quantity and quality of ideas produced. His technique – originally developed in the world of advertising – has since been adopted across education, business, and research settings worldwide.
The core principles of brainstorming
Osborn identified two guiding principles that underpin any effective brainstorming session: deferred judgment and quantity over quality. He believed that producing a large number of ideas increases the probability of finding genuinely innovative ones. He famously noted that it is easier to refine a wild idea than to generate one in the first place.
From these principles, he developed four core rules that remain relevant in classrooms today:
Go for quantity: The goal is to produce as many ideas as possible. No evaluation or criticism of ideas is permitted, so participants focus on generating rather than defending ideas. The more ideas on the table, the better the chances of finding something valuable.
Withhold criticism: Judgment – verbal or non-verbal – shuts down participation. By suspending judgment, participants feel free to generate unusual ideas they might otherwise keep to themselves.
Welcome wild ideas: Unconventional thinking is not just tolerated – it is encouraged. Ideas that seem outlandish often serve as the bridge to genuinely innovative solutions that a more cautious approach would never reach.
Combine and improve ideas: Participants are encouraged to build on what others have said. This collaborative layering is what transforms a list of individual suggestions into a truly collective outcome.
How brainstorming works in the classroom
Brainstorming is a type of active learning in which the instructor poses a question or problem and students generate as many ideas as possible within a specified time frame. Generated ideas are not evaluated until the conclusion of the session, at which point the class comes together to organise and rank them. Here is how a typical session unfolds:
Setting up the session
The teacher begins by framing a clear, focused question or problem. Avoid preparing students by giving them the problem or issue beforehand – brainstorming is meant to be spontaneous and creative. The question should be concise, but open enough to allow a wide range of responses. Before the session begins, the teacher establishes ground rules: all ideas are valid, no one interrupts, and no one criticises. Arranging seating in a circle or U-shape helps signal that this is a collaborative, democratic activity.
During the session
Students contribute ideas freely – verbally, in writing, or on sticky notes. The teacher records ideas as they flow, usually bullet-pointed, without pausing to evaluate them. The teacher’s role here is to facilitate, not to participate as an active contributor. If the discussion stalls, the teacher can offer a sub-question to redirect thinking, but should resist the urge to steer students toward a predetermined answer.
After the session
Once the idea generation phase ends, the class revisits the list. Ideas are grouped, discussed, and ranked – often through a show of hands or small group discussion. This is where critical thinking kicks in: students evaluate feasibility, consider different perspectives, and refine the most promising ideas into actionable conclusions.
Techniques and variations
There is no single way to run a brainstorming session. Different formats suit different classroom contexts and learning goals.
Round-robin and group brainstorming
The class is divided into groups, each given the same topic and a time limit. Once the time is over, each group selects a student to read out their ideas, and a second round allows groups to note ideas they had missed. This ensures wider participation and exposes students to viewpoints different from their own.
Brainwriting and the card method
In the card method, students list their ideas on a card and pass it to the person on their right. Each student adds to or builds on the previous idea before passing it on again. This works particularly well for students who are hesitant to speak in a group, as it gives them time to think without the pressure of an immediate verbal response.
The pie or mind-map method
A circle is drawn on the board with the central topic written in the middle. The teacher divides the circle into sections, with each section representing a sub-topic. Groups then generate ideas for each sub-topic simultaneously. This visual structure helps students see connections between ideas and prevents the session from drifting off-topic.
Electronic brainstorming
A review of brainstorming techniques in higher education, covering 42 well-grounded studies, found that electronic brainstorming (EBS) – using tools like Padlet or shared online documents – offers distinct advantages, particularly in larger groups. Digital platforms allow students to contribute simultaneously and anonymously, which can reduce the social anxiety that sometimes accompanies face-to-face idea-sharing. Research also suggests that virtual brainstorming may generate more original and innovative ideas than in-person sessions in certain contexts.
Educational applications: problem-solving and innovation
Brainstorming is a problem-solving activity where students build on and develop higher-order thinking skills – moving beyond simple recall toward analysis, synthesis, and creative application. Its educational applications extend across disciplines and learning levels.
Activating prior knowledge
One of the most practical uses of brainstorming is at the start of a new unit. Asking students to write down everything they already know about a topic serves as a diagnostic tool for the teacher while simultaneously helping students make connections between new content and what they already know. This primes the brain for deeper learning.
Problem-based learning
When students are given a real or simulated problem to solve – a community challenge, a design brief, an ethical dilemma – brainstorming provides the generative phase that problem-based learning depends on. The major purpose of brainstorming as a teaching strategy is to foster and enhance communication skills, promote thinking and decision-making, and foster different viewpoints and opinions. Students learn not just to solve problems, but to approach them from multiple angles.
Developing creativity and critical thinking
Research synthesising the results of multiple qualitative studies suggests that the brainstorming technique has positive effects on learners’ cognitive skills and creative output. Designing instruction around brainstorming can foster students’ creativity by directing them toward solving problems through critical thinking. A separate study on higher education found that students exposed to activities such as brainstorming, lateral thinking, and design challenges showed significant improvements in creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Building communication and collaborative skills
Beyond content learning, brainstorming teaches students how to listen actively, articulate ideas clearly, and respect perspectives that differ from their own. The brainstorming method encourages students to think more freely and innovatively than in restricted, routine classroom teaching, while also strengthening student-teacher relationships through a positive, stress-free classroom environment. When students see their contributions captured and taken seriously, it reinforces their sense of belonging and motivates continued engagement.
Tips for teachers: making brainstorming work
Brainstorming is straightforward to introduce but benefits from careful facilitation. A few practical guidelines make the difference between a productive session and one that drifts.
Set ground rules clearly before each session – remind students that all contributions are valid and that criticism is off the table during the generation phase.
Use a time limit. Set a defined time for the discussion; the nature of the topic determines how long is appropriate. A visible timer keeps the energy up and prevents the session from losing momentum.
Assign roles within groups – a note-taker, a facilitator, and a timekeeper. The facilitator can encourage participation, prevent negative conversation, and keep track of time.
Encourage quantity, not quality. Students who worry about the “right” answer will hold back. Reinforcing that more ideas is always better frees them to contribute without hesitation.
Follow through on the ideas generated. One of the most common challenges is that students who have participated in brainstorming and never seen their ideas acted upon lose motivation to contribute in future sessions. Where possible, show students how their ideas shaped the direction of the lesson or project.
Challenges and how to address them
Like any teaching technique, brainstorming has its limitations. Some common challenges include sessions that become unfocused chat, surface-level thinking, or a few dominant voices crowding out quieter students. These can be managed through clear facilitation, structured formats (such as round-robin or brainwriting), and deliberate prompting for deeper responses when the discussion stays too general.
Research also notes that brainstorming is generally more effective with older students. The technique is generally not suitable for younger levels because of the level of reasoning required for it to work effectively. For higher education contexts, however, it is particularly well-suited – adult learners bring professional backgrounds and diverse experiences that enrich the collective pool of ideas significantly.
The research literature on 21st century skills consistently identifies creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking as the core competencies that learners need for professional success. Brainstorming, when implemented with intention, directly develops all four. It is not a warm-up activity. It is a learning strategy that, used well, signals to students that their knowledge matters, that creative thinking is valued, and that problems are best solved together.
