For most of the 20th century, intelligence was treated as a single, fixed number – your IQ score. If it was high, you were considered smart. If it was low, not much could be done about it. That view has since been overturned by decades of research in psychology, neuroscience, and education. Today, we understand intelligence as a multi-dimensional, dynamic capacity – one that includes not just cognitive ability, but also emotional awareness, spiritual depth, and the power to keep learning and improving throughout life.

The evolution of intelligence: from IQ to EQ and SQ

The story of how we define intelligence is really the story of how our understanding of human potential has expanded. It begins with IQ (Intelligence Quotient) – the earliest and most widely recognised measure of intelligence.

According to psychology researchers, IQ was developed in the early 1900s when French psychologist Alfred Binet was tasked with identifying children who needed extra classroom support. The tests he created assessed memory, reasoning, and problem-solving – and eventually became the foundation for standardised IQ testing worldwide. Intelligence, as understood through IQ, refers to the capacity for abstraction, logic, understanding, learning, reasoning, planning, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

However, many psychologists began questioning the validity of IQ tests as a complete measure of intelligence. A single number, derived from a timed test, simply could not account for the full range of human ability.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) enters the picture

In the 1980s and 1990s, a new dimension of intelligence gained recognition. Emotional Intelligence (EQ), popularised by psychologist Daniel Goleman, refers to the ability to recognise, understand, and manage one’s own emotions – and to read and respond to the emotions of others. EQ encompasses emotional awareness, interpersonal skills, and character, reflecting a person’s capacity to communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges, manage conflict, and relieve stress.

Goleman’s research made a striking claim: people with higher emotional and social intelligence tend to go further in life than those with a high IQ but low EQ. This was a significant departure from the IQ-centric model. It placed human relationships, self-awareness, and emotional regulation at the centre of what it means to be intelligent.

Spiritual intelligence (SQ) and the search for meaning

Around the turn of the millennium, researchers pushed the definition even further. By combining findings from psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience, a further dimension of intelligence was identified – called spiritual intelligence (SQ). The term was coined by philosopher and management consultant Danah Zohar in 1997.

Robert Emmons defines spiritual intelligence as “the adaptive use of spiritual information to facilitate everyday problem solving and goal attainment.” Another researcher, Cindy Wigglesworth, describes it as the ability to act with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace, regardless of circumstances.

A useful way to understand how these three forms of intelligence complement each other comes from researcher Ken O’Donnell: IQ helps us interact with numbers, formulas and things; EQ helps us interact with people; and SQ helps us maintain inner balance. Together, they offer a far richer picture of human intelligence than any single metric could provide.

Operational definition: what intelligence actually means in practice

With so many frameworks, it helps to have a clear, working definition. Operationally – that is, defined in terms of what it actually looks like in observable behaviour – intelligence is best understood as the capacity to learn from experience, recognise and define problems, and devise effective solutions.

Intelligence in psychology refers to the mental capacity to learn from experiences, adapt to new situations, understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one’s environment. It includes skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, learning quickly, and understanding complex ideas.

Psychologist Robert Sternberg’s widely cited definition captures this well: intelligence is the cognitive ability of an individual to learn from experience, to reason well, to remember important information, and to cope with the demands of daily living.

This operational definition is significant for educators because it shifts the focus from test scores to real-world functioning. It asks: can a person recognise when they are facing a problem? Can they bring prior knowledge to bear on it? Can they adapt when a solution doesn’t work? These are the markers of intelligent behaviour in any context – classroom, workplace, or everyday life.

Why problem recognition matters as much as problem-solving

Much of the conversation about intelligence focuses on problem-solving. But problem recognition – the ability to accurately identify what the real problem is – is equally important. An important component of solving a problem may be in the initial characterisation of the problem itself, a step in which one must identify the rule set implied or relevant to the problem’s context.

A student who can solve equations but cannot identify when a mathematical approach is even appropriate is operating with a limited form of intelligence. True intelligence involves knowing what kind of problem you’re dealing with – before reaching for a solution.

Perkins’ view: intelligence is learnable

One of the most important and hopeful contributions to our understanding of intelligence comes from David Perkins, a cognitive scientist and co-director of Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Perkins directly challenged the longstanding belief that intelligence is fixed at birth and argued instead that it can be grown, trained, and developed.

In his landmark book Outsmarting IQ: The Emerging Science of Learnable Intelligence, Perkins identifies three distinct kinds of intelligence: the fixed neurological intelligence linked to IQ tests; the specialised knowledge and experience that individuals acquire over time; and reflective intelligence, the ability to become aware of one’s mental habits and transcend limited patterns of thinking.

The three dimensions of Perkins’ model

Perkins organises intelligence into three interconnected dimensions:

1. Neural intelligence – This is the biological foundation: the efficiency and precision of a person’s neurological system. It corresponds to the hardware of a computer – the raw processing capacity we are born with. This dimension is largely fixed and not significantly altered by education or practice.

2. Experiential intelligence – This is the accumulated knowledge and expertise a person builds through study, practice, and lived experience. Experiential knowledge can take the form of empirical or specialised knowledge acquired from social interactions through language, culture, and others. The more diverse and rich one’s experiences, the more this dimension of intelligence grows.

3. Reflective intelligence – This is what Perkins considers the most teachable and, crucially, the most powerful dimension. Reflective intelligence is what Perkins calls “mindware” – the ability to use and manipulate our cerebral skills to effectively utilise neural and experiential intelligence. It includes thinking strategies, self-monitoring, persistence, and metacognition – the capacity to think about one’s own thinking.

Of the three dimensions, reflective intelligence offers the best target of opportunity for education, because it is the most learnable. Better practices of mental management, strategy use, and metacognition can be cultivated in much shorter periods – not overnight, but in months rather than years.

Learnable intelligence: the combination that educators can develop

Perkins defines learnable intelligence as the combination of experiential and reflective intelligence. This is the portion of overall intelligence that educators, learners, and institutions can meaningfully influence. The theory of learnable intelligence shows that by downloading mindware, we can take control of the tools we employ for thinking.

This has direct implications for how we design classrooms, curricula, and professional development. If intelligence can be grown through deliberate practice, reflective thinking, and access to the right tools and strategies, then every learner – regardless of their starting point – has genuine potential to become more intellectually capable.

Importantly, Perkins cautions against mere repetition. Mere practice can lead learners to entrench old patterns of thinking rather than repatterning and depatterning to develop more effective thinking. What matters is reflective practice – consciously examining how you think, and actively seeking better strategies.

What this means for teachers and learners

Taken together, the evolution from IQ to EQ and SQ, the operational definition of intelligence as learning and problem-solving, and Perkins’ model of learnable intelligence all point to the same conclusion: intelligence is not a ceiling – it is a capacity that expands with the right conditions.

For teachers, this means that creating environments which nurture emotional awareness, encourage reflective thinking, and connect learning to real-world problem-solving is not a soft add-on to education – it is education at its most effective. Social and emotional learning should be integrated into a child’s education, as it is integral to their development.

For learners, it means that the question is never “Am I intelligent?” but rather “How am I growing my intelligence?” – through experience, through reflection, through honest engagement with challenges. That reframing alone can transform a learning environment.
