Not every student who struggles academically is unintelligent, lazy, or unmotivated. Who are academically challenged learners?
Academically challenged learners are students who experience significant difficulty keeping pace with expected academic performance – not because of low intelligence, but because of specific learning barriers. They generally fall into three broad groups: slow learners, underachievers, and students with learning disabilities (LD).
Slow learners
Slow learners are students who typically learn at a pace below their peers, often with IQ scores in the range of 70 to 85 – a range sometimes referred to as borderline intellectual functioning (BIF). They are not intellectually disabled, but they don’t qualify for special education either. These students are frequently overlooked precisely because they appear capable, and the assumption is that they simply aren’t trying hard enough.
Students with learning disabilities
Students with learning disabilities (LD) have neurological differences that affect how they process information. The American Psychiatric Association classifies these under Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), with specifiers for reading (dyslexia), math (dyscalculia), and written expression (dysgraphia). A student with dyslexia, for instance, may have average or above-average intelligence yet struggle significantly to decode written words. Crucially, learning disorders do not define a person’s career prospects or ceiling for success – people with dyslexia, for example, often demonstrate exceptional creative thinking. Fostering self-confidence and a growth mindset
Many academically challenged learners arrive in class already carrying a heavy load of academic failure and self-doubt. Rebuilding confidence is not a “soft” add-on to instruction – it is foundational to learning. Research-backed classroom strategies include the “Two by Ten” approach: a teacher takes just two minutes per day for ten days to connect with a struggling student on a personal level – asking about their interests, their weekend, their life outside school. This simple practice builds trust and helps teachers understand how to support each student more effectively. Beyond relationship-building, encouraging a growth mindset – the understanding that intelligence and ability are not fixed – helps students reframe mistakes as part of learning rather than evidence of failure. Teaching strategies alone are not enough if the social environment in the classroom works against academically challenged learners. Peer dynamics profoundly affect how these students experience school – and teachers have more influence over those dynamics than is often recognized.
Why peer inclusion matters

Inclusive learning benefits the whole class, not just those who struggle. Assigning peer mentors is another: when a student who understands a concept is paired with one who doesn’t, both students benefit.
