Across the world, at least 2.2 billion people live with some form of vision impairment, and for a significant number of them, the challenge begins in the classroom. Visually impaired students do not simply need more time or bigger text – they need a fundamentally different approach to how learning is designed and delivered. For educators, understanding what visual impairment actually means, what causes it, how it affects learning, and which teaching strategies genuinely work is not optional. It is the foundation of truly inclusive education.

Types of visual impairment: from partial sight to blindness

Visual impairment is not a single condition – it is a spectrum. Understanding where a student falls on that spectrum directly shapes what kind of support they need.

The World Health Organization defines “low vision” as a visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/400, while “blindness” refers to acuity worse than 20/400, both with the best possible correction. In practical terms, a student with low vision can see at 20 feet what a person with normal sight sees at 70 feet – they have some usable vision, but everyday tasks require significant adaptation.

In educational settings, four terms are commonly used to describe students with visual impairments:

Students with low vision struggle to carry out everyday learning activities without help, while those who are blind may rely heavily on tactile and auditory cues to move, communicate, and learn. Importantly, two students with the same clinical diagnosis can have very different functional experiences in the classroom – which is why individual assessment matters far more than labels.

Colour blindness, a genetic condition affecting the ability to distinguish certain colours (commonly red and green), is also classified as a visual impairment. While it rarely affects a student’s ability to read or write, it can create significant barriers in subjects such as science, maps, or data charts where colour coding is used without alternatives.

Common causes and early warning signs

The leading causes of vision impairment globally are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts. Beyond these, several other conditions are responsible for significant vision loss, particularly in children and young adults.

Key causes educators should know

Refractive errors – such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism – occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. Refractive errors are the most common type of eye condition.

Cataracts involve the clouding of the eye’s lens. While typically associated with older adults, cataracts can also appear in children due to genetic factors or infection, causing blurry or hazy vision.

Glaucoma involves a build-up of fluid pressure inside the eye, typically producing tunnel vision – where peripheral sight narrows progressively. Because it comes with few early warning signs, regular eye exams are critical for detection.

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to blood vessels in the retina due to diabetes. It is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in adults, often beginning as floating shapes or black spots before progressing to complete vision loss if untreated.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited condition causing gradual loss of peripheral vision, often beginning as night blindness in early childhood before narrowing into a tunnel and eventually full blindness.

Infections such as trachoma and river blindness remain significant causes of preventable blindness in many parts of the world, particularly in low-income regions.

Spotting the signs early

Early identification of visual impairment is critical because it allows timely intervention before a student falls behind academically or socially. Signs in children include difficulty focusing on objects, frequent squinting, chronic eye redness, excessive eye rubbing, or high sensitivity to light. In the classroom, a student who consistently holds books very close to their face, struggles to see the board, or has difficulty distinguishing colours or shapes should be referred for a professional assessment without delay.

Young children with early-onset severe vision impairment can experience delayed motor, language, emotional, social, and cognitive development – with consequences that can persist throughout life. This is why the window between early detection and intervention is so important.

How visual impairment affects learning

Vision plays a central role in how most children naturally learn – through observation, imitation, and reading. When that channel is limited or absent, the entire learning process needs to be restructured. Visually impaired students are not less capable; they simply acquire and process information differently.

Visual impairment may manifest in poor visual acuity, reduced visual field, photophobia, poor depth perception, or poor eye tracking and coordination – the extent of which is highly individual and tied to the actual diagnosis. In practice, this affects a student’s ability to read standard print, follow visual instructions, navigate physical spaces, and participate in group activities.

There is also a social dimension. Students with visual impairments may find it difficult to engage in group activities or make friends, and can feel disconnected from classmates if they are unable to fully participate. This isolation, when left unaddressed, can affect confidence, motivation, and overall wellbeing.

Developing literacy through alternative pathways

Literacy development is one of the most significant challenges for visually impaired learners. While sighted students learn to read primarily through print, their visually impaired peers rely on a set of alternative – and equally valid – pathways.

Braille is the tactile reading and writing system that uses a six-dot character grid to represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. Braille literacy remains a cornerstone of education and independence for individuals with visual disabilities, playing a critical role in developing essential literacy skills, fostering cognitive development, and enabling full participation in academic, professional, and social spheres. Crucially, learning Braille allows students to experience aspects of written language such as spelling, grammar, and sentence structure – skills that listening alone cannot fully develop. Digital Braille technologies, including refreshable Braille displays and Braille e-readers, are now extending access beyond paper-based formats.

Audiobooks and audio-supported reading provide an important supplement to formal literacy instruction. Auditory devices are essential tools that support access to printed and digital information, but listening should supplement – not substitute – direct instruction in Braille or print, allowing each student to develop their full literacy potential.

Screen readers and text-to-speech software convert digital text into synthesised speech, enabling students to independently access textbooks, websites, and documents. These tools are particularly powerful at the higher education level, where the volume of reading material is substantial.

It is important to determine what medium works best for an individual child through a Learning Media Assessment – whether that is Braille, print, dual media, auditory strategies, or some combination. A single student may use different tools depending on the subject, context, or type of material – just as any adult might use a mix of reading formats in daily life.

Teaching methods and facilitation strategies

Effective support for visually impaired students requires more than providing alternative formats. It involves rethinking how instruction is designed, how the physical environment is organised, and how teachers collaborate with specialists.

Adaptive technologies in the classroom

Assistive technology refers to a range of tools, devices, and strategies that allow a student to accomplish a task they would otherwise be unable to do, or would have difficulty doing effectively. These range from low-tech tools such as enlarged text or raised-line paper to high-tech digital tools that read to the student or connect to a Braille display.

Research highlights a key concern: students with visual impairments are not always adequately trained to use adaptive technology, making it essential for both pre-service and in-service teachers to receive proper training in these tools. A technology that sits unused because neither the student nor teacher knows how to operate it serves no one.

Orientation and mobility training

Learning does not happen only at a desk. For visually impaired students, navigating the school environment safely and independently is a skill that must be explicitly taught. Orientation and mobility (O&M) training helps students navigate the school environment safely and independently – using techniques such as cane travel, spatial mapping, and tactile landmark recognition. O&M specialists work alongside classroom teachers to ensure students can move between rooms, access facilities, and participate in school activities without unnecessary dependence on others.

Personalised learning materials and classroom adaptations

Standard teaching materials are rarely accessible without modification. Educators need access to specialised training that covers adapted instructional methods, assistive technology, and environmental modifications – including tactile resources, high-contrast materials, and accessible digital content.

Practical classroom adaptations include:

  • Large-print and high-contrast materials: Adjusted font sizes, bold outlines, and colour-contrast enhancements help students with low vision engage with written content.
  • Tactile diagrams and 3D models: Convert visual information – maps, charts, biological diagrams – into formats that can be explored through touch.
  • Verbal description and multi-sensory instruction: Teachers should describe visual content explicitly rather than assuming students can observe it. Hands-on activities and real-world objects deepen understanding beyond what verbal explanation alone can achieve.
  • Accessible seating and lighting: Students with low vision benefit from optimal positioning relative to the board, reduced glare, and adequate ambient lighting.
  • Consistent classroom layout: Stable, obstacle-free environments allow students to move confidently and build spatial awareness over time.

Personalised education plans and collaborative support

No two visually impaired students have identical needs. When adequate instruction is provided and a student is expected to meet high standards, there are no limits to what they can accomplish – but that instruction must be individually tailored. This is best achieved through structured collaboration between classroom teachers, Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), orientation and mobility specialists, families, and the students themselves.

In many countries, this takes the form of an Individualised Education Program (IEP) or equivalent plan, which sets out specific goals, accommodations, and review processes. Higher education institutions also need to develop adaptive and agile policies through inclusive and participatory approaches, building the capacity of faculty and staff to better serve visually impaired students – particularly in online learning environments.

Peer inclusion also matters. Classrooms where differences are openly acknowledged, where peers understand and respect the needs of their visually impaired classmates, and where zero tolerance for bullying is enforced, are the environments where visually impaired students thrive – academically and socially.
