Creativity is not a talent that only a few are born with – it is a capacity that can be deliberately cultivated. Research in higher education consistently shows that when institutions prioritize creative thinking as an explicit goal, students become more adaptive, more engaged, and better equipped for the demands of a rapidly changing world. Yet many classrooms still operate in ways that unintentionally suppress the very thinking they aim to develop. The good news is that practical, evidence-backed strategies exist – for both students and educators – to make creativity a genuine part of the learning experience.

Why creativity matters in education today
For much of educational history, the goal of schooling was to transmit a fixed body of knowledge. That model has become increasingly inadequate. Creativity is now recognized as a form of intelligence essential to innovation – and it is one of the four core competencies, alongside critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, that define 21st-century learning. What makes this especially relevant in higher education is that students are preparing for careers and challenges that do not yet fully exist. As researchers have noted, enabling students to be creative should be an explicit part of the higher education experience – not a byproduct, but a stated and designed-for outcome.
Despite this, a systematic review of creativity research in higher education found that many teaching practices have not caught up with this understanding. One key reason: educators tend to replicate the pedagogical approaches they experienced as students – which rarely included explicit attention to creative development. Changing this requires a conscious shift in how educational environments are designed, how teaching methods are structured, and how educators themselves show up in the classroom.
Building an educational environment that supports creativity
The physical and psychological environment of a classroom shapes whether students feel free to think differently – or whether they stay safely within expected boundaries. Research points to several conditions that allow creativity to flourish: sufficient time and space in the curriculum, varied working situations, and the freedom to work in new and interesting ways. These are not luxuries – they are structural requirements for creative growth.
Open communication and valuing diverse perspectives
A classroom where students feel judged for unconventional ideas is one where creativity quietly dies. In lower-pressure, student-centered environments, students are far more willing to share unconventional ideas and take creative risks. Open communication – where questions are welcomed, different perspectives are taken seriously, and no single “right answer” dominates – is the foundation of a creative classroom climate.
A transdisciplinary review of creativity-fostering teacher behavior found that educators who actively support individuality and uniqueness, and who help students understand how conformity and social pressure inhibit creative thought, produce meaningfully more creative student outcomes. This means structuring discussions so that minority viewpoints are given space, and that students who offer unexpected or counterintuitive ideas are met with genuine curiosity rather than correction.
Importantly, educators should be cautious about labels – calling one student “the creative one” or dismissing another as “not creative” can leave lasting damage on a student’s self-concept. Creativity is not a fixed trait; it is a skill that develops with practice, encouragement, and the right conditions.
Designing assessment that allows for creative outcomes
One of the most significant structural barriers to creativity in educational settings is assessment design. As higher education researchers have observed, traditional exams can inhibit students, while more creative assessments provide a forum where their talent and knowledge can genuinely shine. When assessment is narrowly pre-determined – where there is one correct answer and one acceptable format – students have no incentive to think differently. Redesigning assessments to allow for open-ended outcomes, student-chosen formats, or problem-based responses directly signals that creative thinking is valued, not just tolerated.

Brainstorming exercises, lateral thinking tasks, and scenario-based challenges are all practical ways to build this muscle consistently across subjects.
Problem-based and project-based learning
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is particularly effective at enhancing creative thinking because it requires students to approach real-world problems from multiple perspectives, think critically, and develop innovative solutions. Rather than receiving knowledge passively, students actively construct it through investigation and collaboration. When students are challenged with real-world problems – given the autonomy to work collaboratively and develop their own solutions – the results go well beyond the task itself. They learn to think like problem-solvers, which is precisely the kind of thinking creativity demands.
Research comparing PBL with other teaching methods found that it promotes creativity particularly well when combined with techniques like SCAMPER – a structured method that guides students to Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse elements of a problem. Together, these approaches develop both the flexibility and the analytical depth that creative thinking requires.
Incorporating reflection as part of the learning process
Creative thinking is not just about generating ideas – it also requires the ability to evaluate, revise, and improve them. Building structured reflection into classroom routines helps students understand creativity as an iterative process rather than a one-time event. After completing a project or task, encouraging students to assess what worked, what didn’t, and what they would approach differently next time reinforces that refinement is part of the creative journey – not evidence of failure.
The role of educators in fostering creativity
Educators are not neutral conduits of content. Research is unambiguous that teachers play a critical role in the development of student creativity – and that how they respond to students’ ideas, views, and suggestions during lessons directly shapes students’ willingness to generate new ones. This responsibility is both significant and actionable.
Supporting creative efforts through feedback
Process-focused feedback, as noted in research published by the Harvard Business Review, encourages innovation and risk-taking in creative tasks. When students see that educators notice how they think, adapt, and iterate – not just whether they got the right answer – they grow more willing to explore new ideas. Feedback that emphasizes effort, technique, and lessons learned builds both intrinsic motivation and creative resilience. In contrast, blanket praise or vague criticism gives students nothing actionable to work with and can actually undermine confidence.
Creativity-fostering educators provide formative assessments regularly and are mindful of the balance between freedom and structure – between offering challenges and providing guidance – calibrated to where students currently are in their development. This is not a fixed formula; it shifts with the task, the student, and the moment.
Allowing for mistakes and experimentation
One of the most powerful things an educator can do is normalize the experience of being wrong. Research on growth mindset – the concept developed by psychologist Carol Dweck – consistently shows that students who view their abilities as developable through effort outperform those who see ability as fixed. In creative contexts specifically, research confirms that a growth creative mindset facilitates creative thinking by sustaining the motivation to keep generating and refining ideas even after initial attempts fall short.
For educators, this means actively modeling that experimentation is a legitimate part of learning – not a detour from it. As one higher education practitioner put it, a willingness to experiment and take positive risks is a genuinely powerful tool – not just for students, but for the teachers themselves. When educators are visibly willing to try new approaches, acknowledge uncertainty, and reflect on what didn’t work, they demonstrate that intellectual risk-taking is safe and worthwhile.
Creative behaviors in classrooms are relatively rare partly because divergent thinking receives less reinforcement than convergent thinking does. When a student does demonstrate creative thinking, timely and specific reinforcement is critical – without it, those behaviors are less likely to reappear. Educators who actively look for and respond to creative effort, even in small moments, are building a classroom ecology where creativity becomes a habit rather than an exception.
The educator as model and facilitator
Teachers should increasingly be viewed as facilitators, enablers, and mentors who help learners take control of their own creative processes – rather than as the sole source of correct answers. Creativity-fostering educators deliberately leave task goals and outcome expectations open, allowing them to emerge through students’ work on complex, real-world problems. They encourage students to question widely accepted ideas, empathize with conflicting perspectives, and shift fluidly between different levels of analysis.
This is a meaningful departure from traditional teaching, and it requires educators to be comfortable with ambiguity. The payoff, however, is substantial: classrooms where educators model curiosity, embrace uncertainty, and treat student ideas with genuine respect are classrooms where creativity genuinely grows.
Practical starting points for students and educators
Developing creativity does not require a complete curriculum overhaul. Several targeted shifts can make a meaningful difference. For educators: design at least one assessment per term that is genuinely open-ended; build in regular reflection time after major tasks; respond to unexpected student ideas with curiosity before evaluation; and model your own uncertainty openly. For students: treat every assignment as an opportunity to approach the problem differently than expected; practice generating multiple solutions before settling on one; and engage seriously with feedback – not as judgment, but as data for iteration.
Research from Edutopia highlights that creativity always starts with building the enabling skills around it – learning to advocate for one’s ideas, to compromise, to evaluate competing possibilities. These are not separate from creative thinking; they are part of what makes it possible. The OECD’s research on creativity in schools similarly points out that the most effective programs are not one-off activities but sustained, culture-wide commitments – built into professional development, curriculum design, and daily classroom practice.
