Ask most people what creativity means, and you’ll get answers pointing to painting, music, or writing. Ask them whether they consider themselves creative, and many will hesitate. This hesitation reflects a widespread misunderstanding of what creativity actually is – where it comes from, who has it, and what it looks like in practice. In reality, creativity is one of the most well-studied constructs in psychology, and the research paints a very different picture from the popular myths that surround it.

What does creativity actually mean?

The definition that psychologists have converged on is clear and consistent. According to the American Psychological Association, creative ideas are those that are both original and effectivenovelty alone is not enough. A random string of nonsense words is new, but nobody would call it creative. As the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes, a product is creative only when it meets two conditions: it must be new, and it must be valuable in some way – useful, appropriate, or worthwhile.

Psychology professor Michael Mumford summarized decades of research simply: creativity involves “the production of novel, useful products.” This three-part standard – novelty, quality, and appropriateness – is what separates creative work from mere novelty or random experimentation. A new solution to a classroom problem, a fresh angle on a research question, or an unconventional teaching method that actually works – all of these qualify as genuinely creative acts.

It is also worth noting that Psychology Today highlights that creativity exists on a spectrum. It does not only manifest in grand artistic gestures. Everyday creativity – the kind described by researchers at Harvard Medical School – includes ordinary expressions of originality in daily tasks, personal work, and problem-solving. In short, creativity is not reserved for exceptional outputs; it is woven into how thoughtful people approach any challenge.

Characteristics of creative thinkers

What sets creative people apart cognitively? Psychologists have identified a consistent set of thinking traits. The most influential framework comes from J.P. Guilford, the American psychologist who, in his landmark 1950 presidential address to the American Psychological Association, called on researchers to study creativity scientifically. Guilford argued that creativity is rooted in divergent thinking – the ability to generate multiple, varied solutions to open-ended problems – as opposed to convergent thinking, which seeks a single correct answer.

Guilford identified four measurable dimensions of divergent thinking that characterize creative ability. These remain central to creativity research and education today.

Fluency

Fluency refers to the sheer quantity of ideas a person can generate. Divergent thinkers can produce numerous responses to a prompt quickly and continuously. A fluent thinker asked to list uses for a brick doesn’t stop at two or three – they keep generating. Fluency matters because more ideas increase the probability that at least some of them will be genuinely valuable.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the ability to shift perspectives and move across different categories of thought. Britannica describes it as the capacity to use ideas and tools in unusual ways. A flexible thinker doesn’t get locked into one approach – they can reframe a problem, change direction, and consider it from completely different angles. This is what separates a creative problem-solver from someone who keeps applying the same solution to every situation.

Originality

Originality is the capacity to think of ideas that are statistically rare – responses that most people wouldn’t generate. Guilford’s Alternate Uses Task, which asks participants to list unusual uses for an everyday object, measures originality by tracking how uncommon each response is. Originality is not about being bizarre for its own sake; it is about producing ideas that are genuinely new within a given context.

Elaboration

Elaboration is the ability to develop and expand on ideas with detail and depth. A creative thinker does not just generate an idea and stop – they build it out, refine it, and consider its implications. According to Creative Huddle, elaboration reflects the level of detail and development embedded in a creative response. This is often the trait that transforms a rough idea into something practical and complete.

Beyond divergent thinking: other traits of creative individuals

While Guilford’s four dimensions are foundational, research identifies other recurring characteristics in creative people. Britannica points out that creative individuals tend toward autonomy – independent, nonconformist thinking – and show a strong drive toward problem-seeking, not just problem-solving. They have an unusual tolerance for ambiguity and a natural curiosity about what is not yet known. EBSCO Research further notes that creative people tend to have a wider range of interests and a preference for complex, abstract thinking – what researchers call cognitive complexity. They are drawn to questions that don’t have obvious answers.

Common myths about creativity – and what research actually says

Despite decades of scientific research, a study published in Personality and Individual Differences found that creativity myths were endorsed as accurate by approximately half of the 1,417 people surveyed across six countries. These misconceptions are not harmless – they actively discourage people from exploring their creative potential. Here are the most persistent ones, and why they do not hold up.

Myth 1: Creativity is a gift – you either have it or you don’t

This is perhaps the most damaging myth of all. The belief that creativity is an inborn trait, fixed at birth and distributed unevenly, causes many people to write themselves off as “not creative” long before they have tested that assumption. Research cited by the Ateneo Innovation and Policy Office shows that such beliefs are linked to lower creative confidence and reduced engagement. The reality, according to Guilford himself, is that creativity can be measured, developed, and taught. It is not a static trait – it responds to practice, exposure, and environment.

Innovation Lab summarizes the research clearly: with proper training, anyone can generate new and creative ideas. Creativity is better understood as an expandable capacity, not a fixed inheritance.

Myth 2: Only geniuses are creative

This myth ties creativity to exceptional intelligence – the idea that only people with extraordinary IQs produce creative work. Research does not support this. Britannica describes the “threshold model” of intelligence and creativity, which proposes that above a certain level of intelligence, IQ has little further correlation with creative output. In other words, being highly intelligent does not make someone highly creative, and lacking genius-level intellect does not prevent creative thinking. Intelligence may set limits on how much information a person can learn and retain, but creative thinking provides the flexibility to use that information in novel ways – and that flexibility is teachable.

Research reviewed by Inc. is direct on this point: scientific studies do not support the idea that some people are naturally more creative based on personality or genetics. Anyone can be creative when taught good techniques for generating and developing ideas.

Myth 3: Creativity is about spontaneous inspiration

Popular culture loves the image of the lone genius struck by sudden inspiration – the “eureka moment.” But research reviewed in Psychology Today shows that people persistently overestimate the role of spontaneity and chance in creative achievement while underestimating the role of persistence and expertise. Creative work is largely a process – one that involves preparation, knowledge-building, incubation, and deliberate effort. SAGE Publishing’s analysis puts it well: creativity is not a single, spontaneous act but a process that can be learned, taught, and practiced.

Myth 4: Creativity belongs only to artists

One of the most restrictive myths is that creativity is domain-specific – the property of painters, musicians, and writers. Psychology Today directly challenges this framing, noting that all sorts of people, at various levels of natural ability, are capable of engaging in creative processes. A teacher redesigning a lesson, a doctor diagnosing an unusual case, an engineer adapting a design under constraints – all are exercising creativity. Limiting the label to artistic work prevents many people from recognizing or developing their own creative thinking. As the Ateneo Innovation and Policy Office concludes, creativity is a human capability that grows through curiosity, practice, and collaboration – not a title that belongs to one profession.

Why this matters for education and professional development

Understanding creativity accurately has real consequences – especially in educational and professional contexts. When educators and learners believe creativity is a rare gift, they stop investing in it. When they understand it as a set of cognitive skills – fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration – they can teach it, practice it, and assess it systematically. Britannica’s analysis of creative thinking notes that school and work environments that encourage individual expression and tolerate unconventional thinking actively foster creativity. The inverse is also true: environments that reward only convergent, rule-following responses suppress it.

Guilford’s work, carried forward by Torrance and many others, gives educators a concrete framework. Creativity is not an ineffable mystery – it has identifiable components, measurable dimensions, and a research base that continues to grow. Recognizing this shifts creativity from something people either have or lack into something everyone can cultivate.
