When we use the word “learning,” we often mean it loosely – a child “learning” to walk, a student “learning” a formula before an exam, or a driver “learning” to brake instinctively at a red light. But in educational psychology, learning has a precise meaning, and it is quite different from several related concepts that are easy to conflate with it. Learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge that results from experience – it is conscious, effortful, and driven by interaction with the environment. Reflex action, maturation, instinctive behavior, and performance are all distinct from this definition in important ways. Understanding these differences is not just an academic exercise – it shapes how teachers plan instruction, assess students, and support development at every stage.

What do we mean by learning?

Before drawing distinctions, it helps to be clear about what learning actually is. In its psychological sense, learning is a process that leads to a relatively stable change in behavior, knowledge, or skills as a result of experience, practice, or training. It is an active, intentional process – it requires engagement with new information or situations and some form of internal reorganization. A person who learns to swim, to solve quadratic equations, or to manage stage fright has undergone a genuine change in their internal capability. That internal change is what makes learning distinct from everything else discussed here.

Learning vs. reflex action

A reflex action is one of the clearest contrasts to learning. Reflexes are a motor or neural reaction to a specific stimulus in the environment – they tend to be simpler than instincts, involve the activity of specific body parts and systems, and engage more primitive centers of the central nervous system such as the spinal cord and the medulla. When a doctor taps your knee with a reflex hammer and your leg kicks forward, no thought is involved. When dust gets in your eye and you blink, you haven’t “decided” to blink. The response is automatic, involuntary, and identical every time it occurs.

Learning, by contrast, is voluntary and modifiable. It requires conscious engagement at least at some stage, and it changes with experience and practice. Crucially, reflex actions are not influenced by prior experience – they happen the same way whether the stimulus is encountered for the first or hundredth time. A child who touches a hot pan will pull their hand back reflexively the very first time. That pull-back is a reflex. But the decision they subsequently make to use a kitchen cloth when handling hot utensils – that is learning. The reflex bypasses the brain’s higher processing centers; learning depends on them.

A key distinction in the nervous system

In a reflex, the stimulus may not even require brain activity – instead, it travels to the spinal cord as a message that is transmitted back through the body, tracing a path called the reflex arc. This is why reflexes are so fast and so reliable – they don’t wait for the brain to deliberate. Learning, on the other hand, requires the higher brain to process, store, and retrieve information. This neurological difference is what makes reflex actions categorically separate from any form of learning.

Learning vs. maturation

Maturation is often confused with learning because both produce changes in behavior over time. But the mechanisms could not be more different. Maturation is the process of becoming mature or developed, both mentally and physically, and it occurs through individual biological growth – not through experience, practice, training, or external stimuli. A toddler begins to walk not because someone taught them to walk, but because their muscles, bones, and neural pathways have developed sufficiently to make walking possible. That developmental unfolding is maturation.

Learning, in contrast, comes through experience, knowledge, and practice, while maturation comes from within the individual as they grow and develop. A child may physically mature and develop the vocal apparatus needed for speech, but they will not automatically speak a particular language – they must be exposed to it, hear it, practice it, and internalize it. The maturation provided the biological readiness; the learning built the skill on top of that readiness.

How maturation and learning interact

While they are distinct, maturation and learning are closely interrelated. Maturation sets limits beyond which development cannot progress even with the most favorable learning methods and the strongest motivation on the part of the learner. In practical terms, this means that readiness matters. Trying to teach algebra to a five-year-old, regardless of how skilled the teacher is, will likely fail – not because the child is incapable of learning, but because they have not yet reached the maturational stage that makes such abstract reasoning possible. Educators who understand this principle can identify the right “teachable moment” and deliver instruction at the point when a learner is biologically and cognitively ready.

At a certain age, a child begins to talk because the brain has matured to a level where it can recognize and imitate human speech – that is maturation at work. But learning to use specific words, form sentences, and communicate meaningfully requires ongoing exposure to language in the environment. Maturation provides the biological foundation; learning does the building.

Learning vs. instinctive behavior

Instincts occupy an interesting middle ground between simple reflexes and complex learned behaviors. Instincts are innate behaviors that are triggered by a broader range of events, such as maturation and changes in seasons – in contrast to reflexes, which are triggered by a specific, immediate stimulus. Birds migrating south as winter approaches, salmon swimming upstream to spawn, and newborn mammals nursing from their mothers – these are all instinctive behaviors. They are complex, species-specific, and require no prior learning or practice.

Any behavior is instinctive if it is performed without being based upon prior experience – it is therefore an expression of innate biological factors. This is the critical contrast with learning. Learned behavior, by definition, requires prior experience. A child is not born knowing how to ride a bicycle, multiply fractions, or speak politely to elders – these are all acquired through deliberate practice and exposure. An instinct, on the other hand, is present and complete at birth (or at a specific maturational stage), requiring no rehearsal.

Why instincts are not learning

One reason instincts are sometimes mistaken for learning is that they can improve with practice. Though an instinct is defined by its invariant innate characteristics, details of its performance can be changed by experience – for example, a dog can improve its listening skills by practice. But the instinct itself – the drive to listen for prey, to build a nest, or to establish a pecking order – does not need to be learned. Humans, compared to other animals, have relatively fewer and weaker instincts, which is why we are so heavily dependent on learning. In general, with higher mammals and especially humans, instinctive characteristics diminish in favor of the capacity to learn.

Learning vs. performance

Of all the distinctions discussed here, the one between learning and performance is perhaps the most practically significant for educators. Performance is the observable, measurable behavior that a person demonstrates in a given moment – what they actually do. Learning is the internal, relatively permanent change in capability that underlies that behavior. The two are related but they are not the same thing, and confusing them leads to serious errors in teaching and assessment.

The learning-performance distinction is a concept in behaviorism that stresses the difference between the learning of a behavior and actual performance of the behavior – learning isn’t just the performance of a learned behavior, it is a change in the ability and potential to do the behavior. A student might have learned to solve a type of problem but perform poorly on a test because of anxiety. Conversely, a student might perform well on an in-class exercise with prompts and guidance but have learned very little in any durable sense.

Why performance can mislead

Research published in peer-reviewed literature has highlighted just how unreliable performance is as a proxy for learning. The primary goal of instruction should be to facilitate long-term learning – to create relatively permanent changes in comprehension, understanding, and skills. But during the instruction or training process, what we can observe and measure is performance, which is often an unreliable index of whether those long-term changes have taken place.

Performance refers to behavior, knowledge, and understanding that can be measured in the short term – for example, checking at the end of a lesson what students have understood about new content. Learning, however, requires a change in long-term memory. A student who scores well at the end of a lesson but cannot recall the content two weeks later has demonstrated performance, not learning. This is why retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and delayed testing are considered far more accurate measures of genuine learning than immediate assessments.

Latent learning: when learning exists without performance

A telling example of the learning-performance gap is latent learning – when learning occurs and is stored internally but is not immediately expressed in behavior. When an organism achieves the capability to do a particular behavior, it may remain latent or unused for a time before it is actually performed. A person who has watched a card game for years may have learned a great deal about strategy and rules without ever having played – and their performance in a first game may far exceed that of someone who has never observed it. The learning happened silently; the performance came later.

Putting it all together: practical examples

These distinctions can be grounded in everyday situations that teachers and learners encounter regularly.

When a student sneezes during an exam, that is a reflex action – automatic, involuntary, and completely unrelated to experience or instruction. When a teenager’s voice deepens or a child’s baby teeth fall out, that is maturation – biologically programmed and independent of what they have been taught. When an infant cries to signal hunger without ever being told to do so, that draws on instinctive behavior – present at birth and requiring no practice. But when a student, after weeks of difficulty, finally understands how to construct an argument in an essay, and can do so again months later without a prompt – that is learning.

Now consider a student who scores 90% on a chapter test taken immediately after revision. Is that learning? Not necessarily – it may be performance driven by short-term recall. If the same student scores 85% on a surprise test three weeks later with no revision, that is a better signal of genuine learning. The distinction matters enormously for how teachers design assessments, plan revision sessions, and decide when to move on to the next topic.

Maturation also has immediate classroom relevance. A primary school teacher who introduces abstract algebraic thinking to six-year-olds may see little progress – not because the children are unwilling or incapable of effort, but because their cognitive maturation has not yet reached the stage that makes formal operations possible. Adjusting instruction to match developmental readiness is one of the most important applications of this distinction in practice.
