These choices, whether made consciously or not, are guided by underlying frameworks known as models of teaching. Understanding what these models are, why they matter, and how to choose among them is one of the most consequential skills an educator can develop.

What are models of teaching?
According to education scholars, a model of teaching is a plan or pattern that can be used to shape curricula, design instructional materials, and guide instruction in the classroom and other settings. The widely cited definition by Bruce Joyce and Marsha Weil – whose landmark book Models of Teaching has been a foundational text in teacher education since 1972 – describes a teaching model as a set of guidelines for designing educational activities and environments that specify ways of teaching and learning intended to achieve particular kinds of goals.
Put simply, a model of teaching is not a haphazard collection of classroom tactics. It is a systematic procedure built on theoretical assumptions about how learning occurs, what motivates learners, and what kinds of outcomes are desirable. Each model specifies the roles of both teacher and student, the social climate of the classroom, the sequence of instructional activities, and the criteria by which learning will be evaluated.
Development of models of teaching is considered one of the important innovations in learning, because they give educators clear direction: what to teach, how to teach it, and what actions to take at each stage of the process. Crucially, models of teaching are also models of learning – as students acquire knowledge, ideas, and skills through a well-structured model, they are simultaneously learning how to learn.
Why teaching models matter
The case for teaching models is not merely theoretical. Using different models of teaching in the classroom is significant for several interconnected reasons. They allow educators to cater to different learning styles, make instruction more flexible and responsive, and encourage the higher-order skills – critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration – that are essential in contemporary life.
Breaking the monotony of conventional methods
Traditional, lecture-heavy teaching has a well-documented limitation: it positions students as passive recipients of information. Teaching models break the monotony of conventional methods and act as a guideline for the teaching-learning process. Rather than simply broadcasting content, a model structures how students interact with material – through inquiry, discussion, collaborative tasks, or guided discovery. This shift from passive reception to active engagement is at the heart of what makes models of teaching so educationally powerful.
The four families of teaching models
Joyce and Weil grouped models of teaching into four broad families, each reflecting a distinct approach to how learning happens:
Information Processing models – such as Bruner’s Concept Attainment Model, Taba’s Inductive Thinking Model, and Ausubel’s Advance Organizer – focus on enhancing students’ capacity to acquire and organise data, sense problems, and generate solutions. They foster logical thinking and intellectual inquiry.
Personal models – such as the Non-Directive Teaching Model – emphasise individual growth, self-awareness, and the development of self-directed learners. They help students build a stronger sense of identity and take greater responsibility for their own education.
Social Interaction models – including cooperative learning and role-playing – emphasise the relationship between the individual and the group. Their primary goals are to develop human-relations skills, social values, and the capacity for collaborative problem-solving.
Behavioural Modification models – grounded in the work of B.F. Skinner – focus on changing observable learner behaviour through structured reinforcement. They are particularly effective for developing specific skills, habits, and self-regulation strategies.
No single family is universally superior. A core insight from Joyce and Weil’s research is that there is no “one best” model – effective teachers build a repertoire and draw on different models depending on their learning objectives and student needs.
Impact on student learning
The value of teaching models is ultimately measured in what students are able to do – not just at the end of a lesson, but in the long run. Research by Joyce, Weil, and Calhoun reported that the routine use of teaching models helps students increase their aptitude, facilitates their ability to learn how to learn, accommodates individual differences, and builds communities of learners. Teaching models can lead to improvements in the quality of instruction because they emphasise sound functional planning, the identification of clear goals, and a defined process for both content delivery and student engagement.
Knowledge retention and deeper understanding
One of the most consistent findings in educational research is that varied instructional approaches support better retention. When students encounter information through multiple methods – visual presentation, hands-on activity, peer discussion – they engage more cognitive pathways, making recall more durable. The U.S. Institute of Education Sciences confirms that giving students time to actively practise new knowledge or skills is critical for the brain to consolidate learning – and well-structured instructional models build this practice systematically into every lesson.
Direct and nurturant effects on learners
Joyce and Weil made an important distinction between two kinds of outcomes that every teaching model produces. Instructional effects are the direct, intended learning outcomes – the specific knowledge or skill the model is designed to develop. Nurturant effects are the indirect, implicit outcomes that emerge from the learning environment itself – things like a student’s growing curiosity, autonomy, tolerance for ambiguity, or willingness to collaborate. A model designed primarily for concept attainment, for instance, may also nurture a student’s capacity for independent inquiry as a side effect of how the classroom is structured. Both effects matter: together, they shape not just what students know, but who they are becoming as learners.
Collaborative learning and social development
Social interaction models have a particularly strong impact on dimensions of learning that go beyond subject knowledge. When students work together on structured tasks, they develop empathy, communication skills, and the ability to consider diverse perspectives. Cooperative learning models emphasise group work and peer learning – students learn not just from the teacher but from each other. This enriches the learning experience and prepares students for the collaborative demands of professional and civic life.
Selecting the right teaching model
Knowing that multiple models exist is only half the challenge. The more demanding task is knowing which model to use – and when. Research by educational theorist Daniel D. Pratt, drawn from studies across five countries, shows that effective educators develop a range of teaching perspectives and apply them according to context, subject matter, and learner needs.
Consider the nature of the subject matter
Different disciplines call for different instructional approaches. A science class exploring an unfamiliar phenomenon is well served by an inquiry-based model, where students actively experiment and arrive at principles through guided discovery. A mathematics lesson introducing a new algorithm may benefit from direct instruction, where the teacher models a clear step-by-step process before students practise independently. The authority-style model – structured and teacher-led – remains appropriate for content areas that require strong foundational knowledge and precise sequencing, such as grammar rules or historical chronology. The key is matching the instructional architecture to what the content actually demands.
Understand your students’ learning styles
Not all students learn in the same way. The VARK model – developed by educational theorist Neil Fleming – identifies four primary learning modalities: Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinaesthetic. Visual learners benefit from diagrams and charts; auditory learners process information better through discussion and verbal explanation; reading/writing learners prefer text-based tasks; and kinaesthetic learners need hands-on, experiential activity. A skilled educator observes how students engage with different materials, uses formative assessment to identify gaps, and differentiates instruction across content, process, product, and environment to reach every learner.
Align the model with your educational goals
The choice of teaching model must also be guided by what the lesson is ultimately trying to achieve. If the goal is factual mastery, a model with strong structure, repetition, and direct feedback is appropriate. If the goal is to develop critical thinking or creative problem-solving, models that open space for student inquiry and collaborative exploration will be more effective. Instructional models provide educators with guidance on how to design, sequence, and deliver instruction that supports student learning – but only when the model’s built-in logic aligns with the intended outcome.
Build a flexible repertoire, not a single method
Perhaps the most important principle for educators is this: no model works for every situation. Effective teachers begin each school year by determining the learning needs of students before selecting the best approach, and they remain willing to shift strategies as those needs evolve. The best educators adjust their teaching strategies to their students and the learning process at hand, blending models where appropriate. A lesson might begin with direct instruction to establish a new concept, then move into cooperative learning so students can explore and apply it together. This kind of intentional flexibility – grounded in a clear understanding of what each model does – is what distinguishes good teaching from great teaching.
Teaching models as a professional tool
Well-developed models of teaching are the product of inquiry into human learning, drawn from decades of research in psychology, sociology, and educational science. They give teachers a shared language for professional development, make coaching and peer collaboration more focused, and help schools build coherent, evidence-based instructional cultures. When educators understand the theoretical foundations of a model – not just the surface-level steps – they are far better positioned to adapt it intelligently to their own classroom context.
The long-term outcome of using teaching models well is not just better test scores or stronger lesson delivery. The primary role of education, as Joyce and Weil argue, is to increase student capacity for personal growth, social growth, and academic learning – and teaching models are the most direct avenue through which educators can develop that capacity systematically, lesson by lesson.
