Learning is far more complex than memorizing facts from a textbook. Every time a student grasps a new concept, a child learns to ride a bicycle, a young person develops empathy, or someone picks up social norms simply by watching those around them – each of these represents a distinct type of learning. Researchers and educators have long worked to classify these different forms, giving us frameworks that are both practically useful and deeply revealing about how humans grow and develop. Understanding these types doesn’t just satisfy academic curiosity – it helps teachers design richer lessons, and helps learners become more aware of their own development.

Why classifying types of learning matters

Bloom’s Taxonomy, developed by educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom and his colleagues in 1956, remains one of the most widely used frameworks in education. It organizes learning objectives into three broad domains: cognitive (knowledge-based), affective (emotion-based), and psychomotor (action-based). Each domain follows a hierarchy, moving from simpler to more complex levels of learning. Beyond Bloom, educational psychologist Robert Gagnรฉ contributed further by identifying types such as discrimination learning and principle learning – both critical for how learners make sense of the world around them. Together, these frameworks offer a comprehensive map of how learning actually happens.

Cognitive learning: the domain of thinking and understanding

Cognitive learning is centered on intellectual development – knowledge acquisition, reasoning, comprehension, analysis, and the ability to create something new from what has been learned. According to Bloom’s Taxonomy, the cognitive domain was the first to be formally described, and it remains the most widely recognized component of the taxonomy. It progresses through six hierarchical levels: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create.

In the original 1956 formulation, these levels were described using nouns. In 2001, Bloom’s former student David Krathwohl and co-editor Lorin Anderson revised the taxonomy, shifting the language to verbs – a change that placed emphasis on active performance rather than passive acquisition. This revision also moved “Create” to the highest level of the domain, recognizing the generation of original ideas as the pinnacle of cognitive achievement.

What does this look like in practice? A student who can recall the dates of a historical event is operating at the “Remember” level. One who can compare two political systems and argue for one over the other has reached “Evaluate.” And a student who designs an original experiment to test a hypothesis is operating at “Create.” The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Teaching Excellence notes that educators use this hierarchy to write learning outcomes targeting not just subject matter, but the depth of thinking expected of students.

Why cognitive learning is foundational

Cognitive learning forms the intellectual backbone of formal education. It equips learners with the capacity for critical thinking, problem-solving, and knowledge creation. Without it, students cannot progress to higher-order thinking tasks. Importantly, cognitive objectives can also intersect with emotional growth – when students debate controversial topics or defend their views, they are engaging both their reasoning and their values simultaneously.

Psychomotor learning: acquiring physical and motor skills

Psychomotor learning is about the development of physical skills – coordination, dexterity, and the ability to perform motor tasks with increasing precision and fluency. As described in educational research, the psychomotor domain focuses on skills such as hand-eye coordination and the use of motor functions, helping people perform physical tasks both in daily life and professional settings.

While Bloom identified this domain, he did not elaborate on it extensively. It was later educators – notably Elizabeth Simpson in 1972 and Anita Harrow – who developed detailed taxonomies for psychomotor learning. Simpson’s taxonomy organizes skill acquisition into seven progressive levels: Perception, Set, Guided Response, Mechanism, Complex Overt Response, Adaptation, and Origination. Educators use active verbs such as assemble, construct, demonstrate, and perform to frame psychomotor learning objectives, ensuring students are assessed on actual physical performance.

Psychomotor learning is rarely isolated. Research on the three domains of learning points out that performing a surgical procedure, for instance, demands not only physical precision but also a deep cognitive understanding of anatomy and an affective dimension of care and ethical sensitivity. This integration underscores the idea that holistic learning engages the whole person – mind, emotion, and body. A student in a science lab must understand the theory (cognitive), handle equipment carefully (psychomotor), and collaborate respectfully with peers (affective) – all at once.

Affective learning: emotions, values, and attitudes

Affective learning covers the emotional and attitudinal dimensions of education – how learners feel about what they know, and how those feelings shape behavior and character. The affective domain, formally identified by Bloom’s colleague David Krathwohl in 1964, represents the development of feelings, attitudes, and values. It moves through five levels from simple to complex: Receiving, Responding, Valuing, Organizing, and Characterizing.

At the lowest level – Receiving – a student passively pays attention. Without this, no learning can occur. As learners progress, they begin to actively respond, attach personal value to ideas, reconcile different values into their own belief system, and finally internalize a consistent worldview. A student who not only learns about environmental conservation but also changes personal habits and advocates for sustainability has reached the highest levels of affective learning.

Affective learning in the classroom

Affective learning shapes the kind of people students become – their social interactions, ethical choices, and emotional intelligence. As noted by instructional design experts, since emotion draws attention and channels strong residual memory, educators in any discipline benefit from intentionally incorporating affective objectives into their teaching – not just in subjects like literature or philosophy, but across the board. A mathematics lesson can include moments of genuine inquiry and intellectual risk, engaging both cognition and emotion together.

Concomitant learning: what students learn without being taught

Concomitant learning – sometimes called incidental or hidden learning – refers to the lessons students absorb unconsciously through their environment, observations, and everyday classroom experiences. It is not part of any written curriculum, but it profoundly influences how students think and behave. Research archived by ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) describes concomitant learning as the multiple, often unplanned effects of classroom experiences – what a student’s affective and social development picks up alongside the formal academic content.

The clearest examples come from teacher behavior and school culture. When a teacher consistently treats students with respect and patience, students absorb lessons about fairness and empathy – lessons never listed in the syllabus. When group projects are the norm, students learn collaboration. When bullying is ignored, students may internalize that silence is acceptable. None of these are formally taught, yet all have lasting impacts.

Why teachers must be aware of concomitant learning

Because concomitant learning is unavoidable, it places a special responsibility on educators. A teacher is, in the words of education researchers, the classroom’s most important hidden persuader. By becoming conscious of the implicit messages their words, actions, and classroom culture send, teachers can ensure that concomitant learning reinforces positive values – curiosity, respect, perseverance – rather than undermining them. This awareness is especially significant in today’s complex world, where emotional intelligence and ethical decision-making are as important as academic knowledge.

Discrimination and principle learning: from recognizing differences to applying rules

These two types of learning, rooted in the work of Robert Gagnรฉ, represent critical steps in intellectual skill development. They are positioned in the middle of Gagnรฉ’s learning hierarchy – more complex than rote memorization but foundational for higher-order problem-solving.

Discrimination learning

Discrimination learning is the ability to recognize and respond differently to stimuli that may appear similar on the surface. According to Gagnรฉ’s hierarchy, this involves developing appropriate responses to a series of similar stimuli that differ in a systematic way. A child learning to distinguish the letter “b” from “d,” a biology student telling apart a frog from a toad, or a medical student recognizing the difference between two similar symptoms – all are examples of discrimination learning at work.

This skill is more demanding than it appears. The process becomes more complex due to the phenomenon of interference, where one piece of learning inhibits another – a key reason why forgetting happens. Repeated, varied practice is essential to strengthen discrimination skills, especially when the stimuli involved are very similar to one another.

Principle learning

Principle learning (also called rule learning) is a higher-order skill that involves understanding the relationship between concepts and applying that relationship in varied situations. As described by the Distance Learning Institute, understanding grammar rules, mathematical formulas, or scientific principles all represent this type of learning – students must grasp how concepts relate to each other and use these relationships to solve problems, including unfamiliar ones.

Crucially, Gagnรฉ believed that principle learning must be built on a foundation of prior discrimination and concept learning. A mathematics teacher, for instance, must ensure students can tell numbers apart (discrimination) and understand place value (concept) before they can meaningfully apply arithmetic operations (principle). Gagnรฉ’s broader theory emphasizes that learning hierarchies define both what intellectual skills must be learned and the sequence in which instruction should deliver them – jumping to higher levels without the necessary prerequisites leads to confusion and poor outcomes.

How these types of learning work together

None of these types of learning exist in isolation. In a typical classroom, a student might simultaneously engage cognitive processes to understand a concept, psychomotor skills to write or build something, affective responses to connect emotionally with the material, and discrimination skills to distinguish one idea from another. Meanwhile, concomitant learning is always running in the background, shaped by everything from the teacher’s tone to the classroom’s physical layout.

For educators, this interconnectedness means that effective teaching cannot target just one type of learning. Research published on the domains of learning emphasizes that holistic education requires addressing intellectual growth, emotional development, and physical skill development together. When curricula are designed with all of these types in mind, learners emerge not just with knowledge, but with the values, skills, and character to apply it meaningfully in life.
