When a school struggles with declining student engagement, or a classroom technique stops working, what does an educator do? The instinct might be to try something different and hope for the best. But action research offers a more structured and evidence-driven path – one rooted in a set of core principles that have shaped how educators approach problems for nearly eight decades. Much of what we understand about these principles comes from the work of Kurt Lewin, the German-American social psychologist who first coined the term “action research” in 1944 and laid its theoretical foundations. His ideas – on systematic inquiry, cyclical processes, collaboration, group dynamics, and knowledge creation – remain the backbone of effective educational change today.

Who was Kurt Lewin and why does he matter?
Action research is not a fixed method but an organization of principles that guide inquiry grounded in real-world practice. Lewin, who spent the latter years of his career at MIT, was deeply concerned with social justice, democratic values, and the relationship between theory and practice. His best-known conviction – “there is nothing so practical as a good theory” – captures why his approach endured. He was critical of researchers who conducted studies without producing usable outcomes, and equally critical of practitioners who acted without any theoretical grounding. Action research, as Lewin envisioned it, was designed to bridge that gap. In education specifically, his framework gave teachers, school leaders, and researchers a shared methodology for investigating real problems and implementing evidence-based solutions.
Lewin formally articulated action research in his 1946 paper Action Research and Minority Problems, describing it as research into the conditions and effects of social action, conducted through a spiral of steps each involving planning, action, and fact-finding. That spiral structure, along with his theory of change management, forms the foundation of the eight key principles discussed below.
1. Systematic problem-solving
The first and most defining principle of action research is its commitment to systematic problem-solving. Rather than relying on intuition or trial-and-error, action research uses research-backed methods to identify, analyze, and address challenges in educational or social settings. The process is methodical – it begins with carefully observing a problem, collecting data to understand its scope, and designing an intervention based on that evidence.
In a classroom context, this might look like a teacher who notices that students consistently underperform on a particular concept. Instead of simply adjusting the lesson on the fly, the teacher uses action research to document the problem, gather student feedback, review literature on effective teaching strategies, and then implement a structured response. The systematic nature of the process is what distinguishes action research from everyday reflective practice. Each cycle feeds into the next, with the outcomes of one phase shaping the planning of the next.
This spiral structure is what makes action research adaptive. According to Lewin’s model, the first cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting – and then continues into a second cycle of replanning, acting, observing, and reflecting again. The process is never truly finished; it evolves as new data emerges and understanding deepens. It emerged from a period of fact-finding and reconnaissance – understanding the landscape of a problem before deciding on a course of action. Lewin argued for a system of analysis, fact-finding, conceptualization, planning, and execution, followed by a repetition of the whole cycle – with each stage involving the participants of the social world under investigation. Action research is not a solitary exercise. One of its most powerful principles is the emphasis on collaboration – between teachers and researchers, among teaching teams, and even between educators and students. Lewin’s early experiments at workplace settings demonstrated that encouraging communication and cooperation among participants could overcome conflict and improve outcomes significantly.

A 2025 study published in Educational Action Research found that value was created through collaborative engagement between teachers and researchers, expanding professional knowledge, enabling practice-informed adaptation, and fostering collective learning and shared knowledge. The study emphasized that sustained partnerships – not short-term interactions – were what led to meaningful professional growth.

- Unfreezing involves creating awareness of the need for change. It means breaking down existing habits, assumptions, and practices by making the problem visible and generating a shared readiness to act. In a school context, this might mean presenting data that reveals a gap in student achievement and building consensus among staff that current methods are not sufficient.
- Moving is the phase of active change – where new approaches are trialed, data is collected, and the intervention is in motion. This is the action phase of the research cycle, where uncertainty is highest and learning is most intense.
- Refreezing involves embedding the new practices into the institution’s regular operations. Changes that have proven effective are consolidated into policy, routine, or professional culture so they become sustainable rather than temporary.

This principle of researcher participation is what gives action research its distinctive character and practical relevance. Lewin argued for a system that involves the participants of the social world under investigation at every stage, making the research inseparable from the practice it seeks to improve.
For teachers, this is a profound shift in role. It serves as a guiding force for professional development, enabling practitioners to study and shape their own work. The final key principle is that action research is fundamentally oriented toward knowledge creation – and not abstract, theoretical knowledge, but practical and actionable knowledge that can immediately inform teaching and institutional practice. Unlike traditional academic research, which often remains confined to journals and delayed publication cycles, the knowledge generated through action research is co-constructed in real time by teachers and researchers working together on real problems.
This knowledge takes many forms in educational settings: new teaching strategies, improved classroom management approaches, refined assessment tools, professional development programmes, or institutional policy recommendations. Research on teacher professional learning confirms that action research processes are collaborative, teacher-driven, and built on contextual knowledge – which makes the resulting insights directly usable in the environments where they were generated.
A 2024 study published in the journal Education Sciences examining action research for inclusion and special educational needs found that practitioners drew on a complex synthesis of contextualised understanding, collaborative working, and data analysis to develop their knowledge of practice. Rather than producing isolated findings, action research builds cumulative professional knowledge that strengthens teacher identity and instructional confidence over time. A study on teacher educators in Kazakhstan similarly found that participants learned to value action research both as a scientific method and as a learning tool for pre-service teachers – extending its impact beyond the immediate classroom into the next generation of educators.
How these principles work together
It would be a mistake to treat these eight principles as separate or sequential features. They are deeply interconnected. Systematic problem-solving drives the need for continuous data collection. The spiral process gives structure to goal setting and reflection. Collaboration amplifies the quality of knowledge created. Group dynamics guide how change is introduced and sustained. And researcher participation ensures that the knowledge produced is grounded in practice, not just theory.
What Lewin built was not just a research methodology – it was a philosophy of inquiry that placed the people living and working within a system at the center of efforts to improve it. As educational action research scholar Clem Adelman noted, Lewin was a scientific pragmatist, not a positivist – he was interested in what research could actually do, not just what it could prove. That practical, democratic spirit is what makes his principles as relevant for today’s educators as they were in 1946.
