Every researcher, whether they realise it or not, begins their work with a set of assumptions about reality. Before choosing a research method, designing a study, or interpreting data, there is a more fundamental question quietly at play: What is reality, and how can we know it? In educational research, this question sits at the heart of two contrasting philosophical positions – the objective view and the subjective view of reality. These positions are not just abstract philosophy; they directly shape how researchers ask questions, gather evidence, and draw conclusions about learning, teaching, and education.

What do we mean by “reality” in research?

When researchers talk about “reality,” they are essentially asking: does the world exist independently of people’s perceptions, or is it shaped by the way people experience and interpret it? The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy explains that objectivity is typically associated with ideas such as reality, truth, and reliability – where an object or phenomenon exists independently of any conscious awareness of it. Subjectivity, by contrast, refers to the inner world of perceptions, which are shaped by personal experience, emotion, and context. This distinction forms the philosophical foundation from which all research decisions flow.

In educational research, this translates into a concrete practical divide: researchers who believe reality is objective tend to rely on measurable, observable data – test scores, attendance records, or student performance metrics. Researchers who believe reality is subjective tend to rely on lived experiences – interviews, observations, and narratives that capture how individuals make sense of their world.

The objective view: reality exists independently of the observer

The objective view holds that a reality exists “out there,” independent of whoever is looking at it. According to this perspective, objective reality consists of facts that exist whether or not we notice them, and independent of any person’s feelings, wishes, or opinions. In research terms, this means that knowledge can be discovered through careful observation and measurement, and that findings, if the methodology is sound, should be consistent regardless of who conducts the study.

This stance is closely tied to the philosophical tradition of positivism. Positivists believe that there is a single reality, which can be measured and known, and they are therefore more likely to use quantitative methods – surveys, experiments, and statistical analysis – to capture that reality. In educational research, a positivist researcher might, for example, measure the effect of a new teaching strategy by comparing pre- and post-test scores across a large sample of students, aiming for results that are generalisable and replicable.

Strengths of the objective approach

The major strength of the objective view lies in its consistency and generalisability. Because findings are grounded in measurable data, they can be tested, verified, and compared across different settings. Positivist researchers tend to emphasise objectivity and detachment, aiming for a neutral stance that minimises the researcher’s influence on the data, with findings typically presented as objective truths supported by statistical analysis. This makes the approach particularly useful for policy-level decisions in education – when governments or institutions need evidence on what works at scale, objective data provides a clear, defensible basis for action.

Limitations of the objective approach

However, the objective view has its critics. Many philosophers argue that our senses can capture only a small and potentially distorted portion of the world as it really is – meaning complete objectivity may be an unreachable ideal. In educational research specifically, purely objective methods can miss the complexity and richness of human experience. A test score tells you what a student achieved but not why, or how they felt about the learning process. There is also a deeper challenge: even the act of choosing what to measure involves a judgement call. As critics of the value-free ideal argue, no research can ever be entirely objective, because all researchers bring their own beliefs, biases, and ethical considerations to the table, consciously or unconsciously.

The subjective view: reality is constructed through experience

The subjective view takes a fundamentally different starting point. Rather than seeing reality as something “out there” waiting to be discovered, it treats reality as something actively constructed by individuals through their experiences, perceptions, and social interactions. Constructivism – the paradigm most closely associated with this view – emphasises how an individual actively constructs their own notions of reality through their cognition, resulting in the existence of multiple realities.

In practice, this means that two students sitting in the same classroom may experience that classroom in entirely different ways. One might find the teacher inspiring; another might feel overlooked. One might experience the curriculum as empowering; another as irrelevant to their life. Constructivism teaches us that every learner is individual and will approach learning in their own way, constructing meaning that is unique to them – shaped by their personal history, culture, and social context.

Researchers aligned with this view typically use qualitative methods: interviews, case studies, ethnographic observation, and focus groups. Rather than an external objective reality from which knowledge may be collected, each individual constructs knowledge and their experience through social interaction. The researcher is not a neutral observer but an active participant in generating meaning alongside the people being studied.

Strengths of the subjective approach

The subjective approach brings depth and nuance that quantitative data cannot easily capture. It is especially valuable in educational research when the goal is to understand the why behind behaviours – why students disengage, how teachers experience professional development, or what belonging feels like in a classroom. By centring participants’ own voices, subjective research can surface insights that standardised measurement would never reveal.

Limitations of the subjective approach

The most common critique of the subjective approach is that its findings are difficult to generalise. Because the research is grounded in particular contexts and individual experiences, the results may not apply beyond those specific cases. There are also questions around bias – if reality is shaped by the researcher’s own perspective, how can findings be trusted as credible? In the social sciences, constructivism urges researchers to reflect upon the paradigms underpinning their research and to present findings as negotiable constructs rather than fixed representations of truth – an epistemically honest, but sometimes methodologically uncomfortable, position.

The philosophical roots of the debate

This debate between objective and subjective views of reality has deep philosophical roots. The distinction between subjectivity and objectivity is often related to discussions of consciousness, philosophy of mind, reality, truth, and communication. Plato argued for universal, knowable truths independent of individual perception – a foundation for objectivism. Berkeley, on the other hand, held that things exist only as they are perceived. Kant offered a middle ground: the external world exists, but we can never fully know it as it is in itself – only as our minds interpret it.

In educational research, these philosophical traditions map onto the two major paradigms that continue to shape the field. The positivist and constructivist paradigms remain the two most prominent in research today, and the differences between them can lead to considerable debate among researchers. This is not merely a technical disagreement – it reflects deeply held beliefs about what education is, what knowledge is, and who gets to define it.

How these views shape research methodology

Understanding whether a researcher holds an objective or subjective view of reality has direct consequences for every aspect of their research design. An objectivist ontology assumes that reality exists independently of human perception, while a constructivist ontology assumes that reality is shaped by human experience, social interaction, and culture. These assumptions determine what counts as valid evidence, how data is collected, and how findings are interpreted.

Consider two researchers studying the same question: “Is this school’s new literacy programme effective?” The first researcher, working from an objective standpoint, administers standardised reading assessments to all students before and after the programme, analyses the results statistically, and reports a measurable improvement. The second researcher, working from a subjective standpoint, interviews students, teachers, and parents about their experiences of the programme, and produces a rich account of how different people perceived its value – and for whom it worked, and why. Both are studying the same programme, but they are asking fundamentally different questions about reality.

Moving beyond the debate: integrating both views

In contemporary educational research, many scholars argue that the debate between objective and subjective views of reality need not be a binary choice. Mixed-methods research has gained significant traction precisely because it draws on the strengths of both. A researcher might use standardised assessments (objective data) alongside student interviews (subjective data) to build a fuller picture of an educational phenomenon. Mixed-methods researchers often prioritise qualitative methods, limit the research to a small number of information-rich cases, and emphasise each researcher’s reflexivity and interpretations – while still incorporating quantitative measures for breadth and generalisability.

Pragmatists – a third major paradigm – take perhaps the most practical stance, arguing that reality is constantly renegotiated and debated, and that the best research method is simply the one that best solves the problem at hand. For many educational researchers working in complex, real-world settings, this flexible approach is increasingly appealing.

What is clear is that neither perspective holds a monopoly on truth. Objective methods give us breadth, comparability, and clear metrics. Subjective methods give us depth, context, and human meaning. Both are legitimate and necessary for a full understanding of education. The important thing is for researchers to be transparent about their philosophical assumptions, because those assumptions shape every decision they make – from the questions they ask to the conclusions they draw.
