Walk into any well-run classroom for children with intellectual disabilities, and you’ll notice something right away: the room is filled with things. Buttons, coins, measuring cups, picture cards, adapted spoons, seed packets. This is not accidental. The careful selection and use of teaching-learning materials is one of the most consequential decisions an educator makes – because for children with intellectual disabilities, the right material can be the difference between a concept that sticks and one that simply floats away. This post breaks down the principles behind choosing and using those materials effectively.

A child who struggles to understand “more than” as a verbal instruction can often demonstrate the concept perfectly when given two sets of blocks. Concrete materials bridge that gap. They make the invisible visible, and the abstract tangible.
The sensory dimension is equally important. Learning anchored to physical experience – to something a child has held, moved, or used – leaves a stronger memory trace. Before selecting any material, educators need to be clear about its purpose. There is a fundamental distinction between two categories of teaching-learning materials – and confusing the two can undermine a child’s progress toward independence.
Learning aids: temporary tools for teaching a concept
A learning aid is a material used to teach a specific concept or skill. Once the learner has genuinely understood and internalised that concept, the aid is no longer needed. Beads used to teach counting, a number line used to introduce addition, or a set of picture cards used to sequence a daily routine – all of these are learning aids. They are instructional scaffolding. The goal is always to phase them out.
This distinction has real implications. If a child continues to rely on counting beads long after they could manage without them, the learning aid has become a crutch rather than a bridge. Good teaching involves knowing when to introduce a material and, just as importantly, when to withdraw it.
Functional aids: permanent supports for independent living

The guiding principle: start with what is already there
One of the most practical – and liberating – principles in selecting teaching-learning materials is this: use common materials from the natural environment first. Garden tools for a horticulture lesson. Real coins for a money lesson. Actual food packaging for a reading activity. These items require no special ordering, no budget approval, and no waiting.
There is also a pedagogical reason for this approach. Teachers and support staff need to develop them, ideally in collaboration with the child’s family to ensure cultural relevance and familiarity.

Whether you are choosing a ready-made material, adapting something from the environment, or creating something new, the following criteria provide a reliable framework for evaluation. A good teaching-learning material for a child with intellectual disability should meet most – ideally all – of these standards.
Does it lead toward independence? This is the most important criterion. Every material, whether a learning aid or a functional aid, should ultimately serve the child’s ability to do something on their own. If a material increases dependency rather than reducing it, reconsider its use.
Is it age-appropriate? A 12-year-old working on early counting skills should not be using materials designed for toddlers. The National Council of Teachers of English notes that materials should always be suited to the maturity level of the student, not just their functional skill level. Respect for the learner’s age and dignity is non-negotiable.
Is it durable? Materials used with children are handled repeatedly, sometimes roughly. Items that break easily create safety hazards and add to cost. Early learning specialists recommend selecting items that are sturdy and can withstand constant use, and that are easy to clean – both for hygiene and for longevity.
Is it safe? No material with sharp edges, toxic components, or small parts that could be swallowed should be used. Safety checks are especially important when learners may not yet understand danger clearly.
Is it affordable and available locally? The best teaching material in the world is useless if it cannot be obtained or replaced. Preference should always be given to materials that are locally available and within the school’s budget. Common household and community items typically score well on both counts.
Does it serve multiple purposes? A material that can be used across several learning activities offers better value than one with a single use. Buttons, for example, can be used for sorting, counting, colour recognition, fine motor practice, and patterning.
Does it support generalisation? As highlighted by Vanderbilt’s IRIS Center, skills must transfer from the learning setting to real-life contexts. Prefer materials that the child will encounter outside the classroom – in shops, kitchens, gardens, and community spaces.
Is it easy to maintain? Materials that require complex upkeep, specialist cleaning, or frequent replacement will become a practical burden. Simple, low-maintenance materials are more sustainable, especially in resource-limited settings.
Can it be used without stigma? Teaching artists and special educators alike advise putting adaptive materials alongside regular classroom materials, not in a separate section. When a material makes a child stand out negatively from their peers, its social cost may outweigh its educational benefit.
Putting it all together
Selecting and using teaching-learning materials for children with intellectual disabilities is not about accumulating a catalogue of specialised equipment. It is about thoughtful, purposeful decision-making – grounded in a clear understanding of what each material is for, who it serves, and where it ultimately leads. The best materials are often the simplest: a set of coins, a picture card, a modified spoon. What makes them effective is not their complexity, but how deliberately they are chosen and how skillfully they are used. Life skills researchers consistently find that when instruction is anchored in real objects and real environments, it translates into genuine independence – which is, after all, the whole point.
