Walk into any well-run classroom for children with intellectual disabilities, and you’ll notice something right away: the room is filled with things. Buttons, coins, measuring cups, picture cards, adapted spoons, seed packets. This is not accidental. The careful selection and use of teaching-learning materials is one of the most consequential decisions an educator makes – because for children with intellectual disabilities, the right material can be the difference between a concept that sticks and one that simply floats away. This post breaks down the principles behind choosing and using those materials effectively.

Why concrete materials are non-negotiable

Children with intellectual disabilities process the world differently from their peers. Abstract ideas – numbers, time, money, sequences – are genuinely difficult to grasp when presented only through words or diagrams. What works is direct, sensory experience. Research on effective teaching methods for intellectual disabilities consistently shows that hands-on, concrete experiences make abstract concepts more understandable and promote active participation. Whether a child is counting beads, measuring water, or sorting buttons by colour, they are learning through touch, sight, and action – not just through listening.

This matters because the language used in standard instruction tends to be figurative, metaphoric, and idiomatic – exactly the kind of language that is hardest for children with intellectual disabilities to process. A child who struggles to understand “more than” as a verbal instruction can often demonstrate the concept perfectly when given two sets of blocks. Concrete materials bridge that gap. They make the invisible visible, and the abstract tangible.

The sensory dimension is equally important. Learning anchored to physical experience – to something a child has held, moved, or used – leaves a stronger memory trace. The Learning Disabilities Association of America notes that concepts are best introduced with hands-on concrete materials, and that tactile and kinesthetic activities help anchor new knowledge. This principle applies with even greater force when a learner’s ability to retain verbally presented information is limited.

Learning aids vs. functional aids: understanding the difference

Before selecting any material, educators need to be clear about its purpose. There is a fundamental distinction between two categories of teaching-learning materials – and confusing the two can undermine a child’s progress toward independence.

Learning aids: temporary tools for teaching a concept

A learning aid is a material used to teach a specific concept or skill. Once the learner has genuinely understood and internalised that concept, the aid is no longer needed. Beads used to teach counting, a number line used to introduce addition, or a set of picture cards used to sequence a daily routine – all of these are learning aids. They are instructional scaffolding. The goal is always to phase them out.

This distinction has real implications. If a child continues to rely on counting beads long after they could manage without them, the learning aid has become a crutch rather than a bridge. Good teaching involves knowing when to introduce a material and, just as importantly, when to withdraw it.

Functional aids: permanent supports for independent living

A functional aid, by contrast, is a tool that compensates for a disability and supports participation in daily life – permanently. A pictorial shopping list that a young person uses at the supermarket, a colour-coded medication schedule, a Velcro-fastened shirt that enables independent dressing: these are not teaching tools. They are independence tools. They are not meant to be phased out. Research published in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research confirms that such assistive products can directly improve daily functioning, community living, and inclusion in society for people with intellectual disabilities.

Understanding this distinction shapes how teachers plan. A cooking lesson might use a simplified recipe card as a learning aid at first – and then, once the learner is ready to cook more independently, the same card (perhaps with pictures added) becomes a functional aid they carry into the kitchen on their own.

The guiding principle: start with what is already there

One of the most practical – and liberating – principles in selecting teaching-learning materials is this: use common materials from the natural environment first. Garden tools for a horticulture lesson. Real coins for a money lesson. Actual food packaging for a reading activity. These items require no special ordering, no budget approval, and no waiting.

There is also a pedagogical reason for this approach. The IRIS Center at Vanderbilt University, which produces evidence-based resources for special educators, emphasises that for learning to be truly effective, it must generalise – that is, skills learned in one context must transfer to new settings, people, and materials. When a child learns to count using the same kind of beads they encounter at home, or practices measuring with the same cups found in their kitchen, that transfer is far more likely to happen naturally.

Over-specialised or highly modified materials can actually work against this goal. If a child only ever learns to recognise numbers on laminated, colour-coded classroom cards, they may struggle to apply that knowledge when they see a price tag or a bus number. The more ordinary the learning material, the more readily the learning moves into real life.

When and how to adapt materials

While the default should always be to use materials as-is, some situations genuinely call for adaptation. The key is to adapt only as much as the individual learner’s needs require – no more, no less.

Simple modifications for independence

Some adaptations are minor but meaningful. A shirt with Velcro instead of buttons allows a child with limited fine motor control to dress independently. A spoon with a built-up handle enables self-feeding. A jar with a lever lid supports independent access. Minnesota’s Assistive Technology Programme lists dressing aids such as zipper pulls and button hooks as straightforward examples of how small modifications to everyday objects can significantly expand functional independence.

These kinds of adaptations preserve the child’s dignity and autonomy. The goal is not to create a special, separate version of the world for the child – it is to give them access to the same world, with minor adjustments where needed.

Materials developed from scratch

Some materials need to be created entirely. A pictorial recipe card showing each cooking step with photographs, a name card a child carries to help them communicate, a visual daily schedule made with real photos of the child’s own environment – these do not exist ready-made. Teachers and support staff need to develop them, ideally in collaboration with the child’s family to ensure cultural relevance and familiarity.

Specialists in child development note that visual aids – picture schedules, choice boards, emotion cards – are particularly effective for children with intellectual disabilities because they create predictability, reduce anxiety, and support communication in ways that words alone cannot. When developing such materials from scratch, the closer they are to the child’s actual daily environment, the more effective they will be.

A checklist for selecting effective materials

Whether you are choosing a ready-made material, adapting something from the environment, or creating something new, the following criteria provide a reliable framework for evaluation. A good teaching-learning material for a child with intellectual disability should meet most – ideally all – of these standards.

Does it lead toward independence? This is the most important criterion. Every material, whether a learning aid or a functional aid, should ultimately serve the child’s ability to do something on their own. If a material increases dependency rather than reducing it, reconsider its use.

Is it age-appropriate? A 12-year-old working on early counting skills should not be using materials designed for toddlers. The National Council of Teachers of English notes that materials should always be suited to the maturity level of the student, not just their functional skill level. Respect for the learner’s age and dignity is non-negotiable.

Is it durable? Materials used with children are handled repeatedly, sometimes roughly. Items that break easily create safety hazards and add to cost. Early learning specialists recommend selecting items that are sturdy and can withstand constant use, and that are easy to clean – both for hygiene and for longevity.

Is it safe? No material with sharp edges, toxic components, or small parts that could be swallowed should be used. Safety checks are especially important when learners may not yet understand danger clearly.

Is it affordable and available locally? The best teaching material in the world is useless if it cannot be obtained or replaced. Preference should always be given to materials that are locally available and within the school’s budget. Common household and community items typically score well on both counts.

Does it serve multiple purposes? A material that can be used across several learning activities offers better value than one with a single use. Buttons, for example, can be used for sorting, counting, colour recognition, fine motor practice, and patterning.

Does it support generalisation? As highlighted by Vanderbilt’s IRIS Center, skills must transfer from the learning setting to real-life contexts. Prefer materials that the child will encounter outside the classroom – in shops, kitchens, gardens, and community spaces.

Is it easy to maintain? Materials that require complex upkeep, specialist cleaning, or frequent replacement will become a practical burden. Simple, low-maintenance materials are more sustainable, especially in resource-limited settings.

Can it be used without stigma? Teaching artists and special educators alike advise putting adaptive materials alongside regular classroom materials, not in a separate section. When a material makes a child stand out negatively from their peers, its social cost may outweigh its educational benefit.

Putting it all together

Selecting and using teaching-learning materials for children with intellectual disabilities is not about accumulating a catalogue of specialised equipment. It is about thoughtful, purposeful decision-making – grounded in a clear understanding of what each material is for, who it serves, and where it ultimately leads. The best materials are often the simplest: a set of coins, a picture card, a modified spoon. What makes them effective is not their complexity, but how deliberately they are chosen and how skillfully they are used. Life skills researchers consistently find that when instruction is anchored in real objects and real environments, it translates into genuine independence – which is, after all, the whole point.
