Language learning is a significant milestone for every child – and for students with intellectual disabilities (ID), it requires thoughtful, structured, and sensory-rich instruction. These learners often find abstract language concepts difficult to grasp through traditional methods alone. That’s where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) steps in. From digital flashcards to interactive grammar exercises and alternative communication tools, ICT opens up practical, engaging pathways for vocabulary building, comprehension, and grammar – right inside the classroom. Here’s a closer look at how teachers are doing it.

Creating visual vocabulary aids with digital tools

For students with intellectual disabilities, seeing a word alongside its image is far more effective than reading a definition. Picture-word cards paired with direct instruction and repetition boost both comprehension and engagement – a principle that translates naturally into digital design. Teachers today use tools like Canva to create bright, high-contrast flashcards featuring everyday topics – fruits, animals, shapes, classroom objects – with large, readable fonts and clear images.

These digital cards are versatile: display them on a smartboard for whole-class recognition activities, or print and laminate them for hands-on table work. The consistency of the visual format matters enormously. Color-coded charts and visual supports help students anticipate routines and build independence, and the same logic applies to vocabulary cards – when students see the same layout repeatedly, recognition becomes faster and more automatic.

ICT tools can prepare work with large fonts, symbols, and specific colours that support students with special needs in accessing curriculum content independently. Canva, Google Slides, and even PowerPoint make it easy to produce this kind of material without specialist design skills – meaning any classroom teacher can build a vocabulary set aligned to their current lesson topic within minutes.

Digital storytelling for vocabulary and comprehension

Stories give vocabulary a context – and context is what makes new words stick. Interactive digital stories support students in acquiring vocabulary by embedding it within a memorable narrative, turning abstract word lists into something students actually connect with and remember.

In practice, this means taking a familiar story – say, “A Visit to the Market” from a standard English textbook – and converting it into a digital storybook using tools like PowerPoint or Book Creator, which is designed to adapt to diverse learner needs through built-in features like text-to-speech, audio recording, and captions. Educators record audio narration for each page, highlight words as they are spoken, and add images that reinforce meaning. For students who struggle to decode text, hearing the narration while watching the highlighted word creates a powerful connection between the spoken and written form of vocabulary.

Digital storytelling is a teaching tool that arises from ICT, and its application in special education is promising – particularly because optical stimuli in the learning process improve memory and engagement for students with developmental differences. Digital storytelling opens up opportunities to scaffold traditional literacy for students with learning disabilities who may find conventional reading and writing tasks overwhelming – offering them a genuine route into language without the anxiety that often accompanies print-based work.

The sequencing built into a story – what happens first, next, and last – also lays the groundwork for sentence structure understanding. When students follow a story across slides or pages, they are implicitly learning how language is organized, without needing to engage with formal grammar rules.

Teaching grammar through visual color-coding

Grammar is one of the hardest language concepts to teach students with intellectual disabilities – largely because grammatical rules are invisible and abstract. Color-coding systems make those rules visible. By assigning a consistent color to each word class – say, blue for nouns and red for verbs – teachers give students a visual shorthand that reduces cognitive load: colors are instantly recognizable, do not need to be decoded like written labels, and can be associated directly with information or a series of actions.

A more structured version of this approach comes from Shape Coding – an evidence-based framework that uses colored shapes to represent grammatical roles: colored ovals for subjects and objects, hexagons for verbs, and clouds for descriptive words. Research shows that this kind of explicit, visual grammar instruction significantly improves grammatical understanding for learners with language difficulties. Teachers can adapt this principle into digital worksheets where a sentence is presented on-screen with color-highlighted words, and students are asked to select the correct word from multiple choices.

Adding audio support to these worksheets makes them accessible to students who struggle with reading but can follow spoken instructions. Text-to-speech software helps students bypass the task of decoding words – and seeing individual words highlighted as the text is read aloud may help improve sight-word vocabulary. Together, the visual color-coding and audio playback create a multi-sensory grammar experience that works across different learning profiles within the same classroom.

Making grammar interactive

Beyond worksheets, grammar instruction becomes more engaging when it involves movement and choice. Drag-and-drop digital activities – where students match a word to its colored category or slot the correct word into a sentence – combine the visual grammar system with an active response, which supports skill retention through hands-on, active learning experiences. These activities can be built in Google Slides, PowerPoint, or tools like Wordwall, and projected on a smartboard for whole-class participation or used on individual tablets.

Interactive practice and assessment for every learner

Assessment for students with intellectual disabilities should never be a one-size-fits-all exercise. The primary aim for learners with intellectual disabilities is to build basic everyday vocabulary and develop a positive attitude towards language learning – and assessment tools need to reflect that goal rather than measuring performance against grade-level benchmarks.

Practical ICT-based activities that serve both practice and assessment purposes include drag-and-drop picture-word matching games, sequencing activities using digital slideshows or printed cards, and recorded speaking exercises. For sequencing, students place story events in the correct order – either by dragging digital images or by physically arranging printed picture cards – building both narrative comprehension and vocabulary recall at the same time. Storytelling platforms allow children to explore language skills without academic pressure, and can serve as a foundation for speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

For students who are non-verbal or have limited speech, recorded speaking exercises need to be replaced with alternative communication methods. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities increase functional communication skills, language and social competence, and can increase natural speech in some individuals. Tools like SnapType allow students to complete worksheets by typing or selecting responses on a tablet rather than writing by hand, providing a low-barrier route to participation. AAC can range from simple picture boards to speech-generating devices and picture-exchange systems – and the right choice depends on each student’s profile, communication needs, and preferences.

Keeping it student-centered

The most effective ICT-based language instruction shares a common principle: it meets the student where they are. Digital stories are a more equitable and empowering way for students to demonstrate their knowledge – particularly for those who are less confident, neurodivergent, or have communication differences. Whether a student completes a drag-and-drop activity, records an audio response, taps a picture on an AAC device, or sequences story cards on a table, what matters is that they are actively engaging with language in a way that is meaningful and achievable for them.

ICT can provide students with language skills, learning resources, and activities anywhere and at any time – which means vocabulary and grammar practice can extend beyond the classroom hour. Sending a simple digital flashcard set home, or sharing a recorded storybook with a family, keeps the language alive outside school and gives parents a window into what their child is learning.
