Picture a child with an intellectual disability being asked to remove their shirt – not before a bath, not after playing outside, but repeatedly at a classroom desk, ten times in a row, as part of a drills session. The skill is “mastered” on paper. But what happens when the child begins taking off their shirt in public, because that’s simply what they’ve learned to do when told? This is the unintended consequence of teaching without context. For children with intellectual disabilities, where, when, and why a skill is taught matters just as much as the skill itself. Context is not background – it is the foundation of meaningful learning.

Why context matters for meaningful learning

Children with intellectual disabilities often have difficulty generalizing skills – that is, applying what they’ve learned in one setting to a different but related situation. This is a well-documented challenge. Research on instructional strategies for students with intellectual disabilities confirms that these learners face particular difficulties in generalizing concepts, making decisions, and problem-solving across environments. When skills are taught in isolation – repeated drills disconnected from real life – the child learns a response, not a behavior. They may perform the action when cued, but they do not understand the social meaning or appropriate timing of that action.

This is what makes decontextualized teaching especially problematic for personal care skills. A child who is taught to undress purely through repeated classroom prompts may fail to understand the social boundaries around that act. The skill becomes meaningless, or worse, leads to inappropriate behavior in public settings. Early research on naturalistic teaching showed that teaching in the context of naturally occurring activities substantially improved generalization and reduced the need to teach each skill separately across multiple situations. That finding alone makes a powerful case for context-based instruction.

Teaching in the right situation

The most effective way to teach personal care skills – bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming – is within the natural routine in which those skills actually occur, and at the appropriate time of day. Dressing is taught in the morning, at home or in a school changing area, as part of getting ready for the day. Bathing skills are practiced at bath time. Toileting is addressed during actual toilet visits, not simulated at a desk. This approach ensures that the activity is embedded in a routine that gives it meaning.

Evidence-based teaching for students with intellectual disabilities consistently supports this position: life skills like dressing, hygiene, and personal care are best taught through repeated practice in natural environments, using real materials in real situations. When a child learns to remove their shirt before a bath – in the bathroom, at bath time – they are not just learning a motor sequence. They are learning a socially situated behavior: this is what happens here, at this time, for this reason.

Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs), which are implemented in natural settings using natural consequences and shared control between child and therapist, are built on precisely this logic. Children learn more rapidly when there is a natural relationship between the action and its outcome – such as removing a shirt before getting into a bath, rather than removing it to earn an arbitrary reward at a classroom table.

Formulating context-appropriate objectives

Teaching in context has a direct and positive effect on how learning objectives are written. When a skill is anchored to a real-life situation, the objective naturally becomes more meaningful and measurable in a functional sense. Compare these two objectives:

  • Decontextualized objective: “Naman will remove his shirt 8 out of 10 times when asked.”
  • Context-appropriate objective: “Naman will remove his shirt before bathing every day.”

The first objective measures a response rate. The second describes a real behavior embedded in a daily routine. Effective IEP goals for daily living skills should directly relate to the student’s everyday life and promote independence – not just demonstrate performance under artificial trial conditions. A goal that reads “before bathing every day” tells the child, the family, and the teacher exactly when and why the skill is to be used. It also gives families a clear way to reinforce the skill at home, within the same natural context.

This principle applies broadly. Adaptive skills IEP goals should reflect the student’s present level of functioning and be tied to real-world situations. Goals framed around context – “during morning hygiene routine,” “before lunch,” “when transitioning from outdoor play” – are not just easier to write. They are easier to teach, easier to track, and far more likely to produce lasting, meaningful change.

Structured learning and real-life application

It is important to recognize that some skills do require initial structured instruction before they can be applied in natural settings. Academic skills such as reading, number recognition, or coin identification may need to be introduced in a more controlled, teacher-directed environment first – especially when the foundational concept is complex and requires focused attention. This is not a contradiction of the context principle. It is a practical recognition that structured and naturalistic instruction can work together.

Research on naturalistic and structured teaching approaches makes clear that both have a role: some skills, at certain times, are best introduced through direct instruction and then generalized through natural contexts. The key point is that the end goal must always be real-life application. A child who can identify coins on a worksheet but cannot use money in an actual shop has not fully acquired a functional skill. IEP goals must ensure that skills are generalized and transferred across different settings and contexts, not confined to the instructional space where they were first taught.

Functional literacy research echoes this concern: teaching a child to read a set of sight words without building the underlying skills to apply reading in new situations limits their ability to participate more fully in daily life. The structured teaching phase is a bridge – not a destination. Educators must plan, from the start, for how and where a skill will be used once learned.

Accepting learning plateaus

One of the most difficult realities in teaching children with intellectual disabilities is accepting that a child may reach a plateau with a particular skill and may not progress beyond it – at least not within a given period of time, and sometimes not at all. The DSM-5’s framework for intellectual disability places significant emphasis on adaptive functioning and the performance of everyday life skills, recognizing that the severity of the condition exists across a wide spectrum, and that what constitutes meaningful progress differs from child to child.

When a child reaches a skill ceiling, continuing to push for advancement through more drills or higher-intensity instruction can be both exhausting and counterproductive. The more productive shift is to focus on optimizing the use of the skill at its current level within daily life. If a child can partially dress themselves, the goal becomes maximizing that independence within their morning routine – not drilling the remaining steps in isolation.

Life skills training for individuals with intellectual disabilities emphasizes exactly this: once a skill is acquired, even partially, the priority is to embed it meaningfully into daily routines so that it contributes to the child’s independence and quality of life. The objective of a well-designed IEP is not perfection – it is progress toward managing daily responsibilities and living with greater confidence. Recognizing a plateau is not giving up. It is sound educational judgment that redirects energy toward functional outcomes.

Children with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, for example, may develop only basic self-care skills even with consistent support. The educational focus in these cases appropriately shifts toward community participation, communication, and the meaningful use of whatever skills the child has already developed – rather than repeating instructional cycles that have not produced further growth.

What context-based teaching looks like in practice

Putting these principles together, context-based teaching for children with intellectual disabilities involves a few consistent commitments. Skills are identified based on what the child needs to do in their actual daily life – not based on a curriculum sequence designed for typically developing children. Instruction happens where the skill naturally belongs: in the kitchen, the bathroom, the classroom transition, the community setting. Objectives are written to reflect real routines. Progress is measured by how well a child uses a skill in life, not just how often they perform it on request.

Naturalistic intervention frameworks describe this as embedding learning opportunities within daily routines and activities – using the child’s own schedule and interests as the organizing structure for instruction. This means a parent who sets up bath time as a teaching moment, a teacher who practices dressing during actual transitions, and a therapist who works on communication during snack time – all are engaged in context-appropriate teaching.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework supports this approach by encouraging multiple means of representation and engagement – not as add-ons to instruction, but as built-in features of how skills are taught from the beginning. When combined with naturalistic, context-rich instruction, UDL helps ensure that children with intellectual disabilities are not just learning in school, but learning for life.
