When these concepts are introduced through carefully designed hands-on activities, children don’t just memorize; they understand. This post walks through five key areas of concept development and the practical, classroom-ready activities that make a real difference for children with intellectual disabilities.

Why hands-on learning matters for concept development
Hands-on learning is especially effective for students with intellectual disabilities because concrete experiences make abstract concepts more understandable and promote active participation. Whether it’s grouping objects by color, modeling clay into shapes, or arranging sticks by length, experiential activities support skill generalization and long-term retention in ways that abstract instruction simply cannot. Tactile and kinesthetic engagement anchors new knowledge and provides immediate, sensory feedback – crucial for children who process information differently.
With that foundation in place, let’s look at how concept development unfolds across five specific domains.
Developing concepts related to awareness of one’s body
Body awareness refers to the ability to understand where body parts are in space, how they move, and how they relate to each other and the environment. For children with intellectual disabilities, this foundational skill needs explicit, repeated, and playful instruction.
Play-based movement activities
Group activities built around following movement instructions are among the most effective tools for building body awareness. Simple commands like “raise your right arm,” “bend your knees,” or “touch your left ear” engage children physically while building language comprehension and spatial understanding simultaneously. Games like Simon Says are particularly well-suited here – Simon Says is a wonderful game to encourage body awareness and self-regulation, especially when it calls out more than one body part at a time, such as “Simon Says touch your right hand to your left knee.”
Songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” or the Hokey Pokey bring music and movement together. Combining music and movement gives children a chance to dance while learning to identify body parts and differentiate left from right.
Body tracing activities
A particularly rich classroom activity involves tracing a child’s full body outline on large paper and then having them color in and label different body parts. This activity does more than build body awareness – it simultaneously develops eye-hand coordination and introduces early number concepts through one-to-one correspondence, such as counting fingers on the outline. Mirrors are also valuable tools for body awareness development, helping children visually connect what they see with what they feel as they move.
Developing concepts related to awareness of the environment
Environmental awareness means understanding the physical and social world around us – the properties of objects, the spaces we inhabit, and the living things we share those spaces with. For children with intellectual disabilities, this understanding grows most effectively through direct, concrete exposure.
Science experiments using everyday objects
Simple experiments make scientific concepts immediate and real. Introducing the concept of floating and sinking, for instance, requires nothing more than a basin of water and a collection of household objects. Children predict, test, and observe – learning through discovery rather than instruction. Sorting items by attributes like sinking and floating introduces both sorting and basic science concepts in a hands-on, engaging way.
Community visits and gardening
Planned visits to places like post offices, markets, or parks give children direct experience of the social world and the vocabulary to describe it. Gardening activities – sowing seeds, watering plants, and watching growth over days and weeks – are equally powerful. They teach concepts related to living things, cycles of growth, and cause-and-effect relationships. Varied sensory stimuli offer different ways to learn about the environment, ourselves, and others, resulting in a solid foundation for emotional, physical, social, and cognitive development. An herb or vegetable garden, for example, turns environmental awareness into a multisensory experience that children remember.
Activities to foster the concept of colour
Color is an abstract concept. Children with intellectual disabilities often benefit from an extended period of concrete exploration before they are expected to name or classify colors independently. The goal is to build recognition through repeated, varied, and enjoyable engagement.
Matching and sorting
Using two sets of colored cards, children can practice matching identical hues – a foundational step before moving to sorting or naming. Once matching is secure, sorting activities follow naturally: grouping a mixed set of colored pens, buttons, or blocks into separate containers by color. Scavenger hunts are an effective way to move learning around the room – children search for items that match a given color, blending physical activity with visual discrimination practice.
Creative and sensory color activities
Painting, vegetable printing (using cut onions, potatoes, or okra dipped in paint), and collage-making all provide a sensory-rich way to explore and label colors. These activities extend learning beyond structured tasks into joyful, creative engagement. Multisensory color activities support holistic development, including fine motor skills and visual discrimination – both of which are important for children with intellectual disabilities. Naming colors during art activities and daily routines (“let’s use the red paint,” “put it in the blue basket”) reinforces the concept naturally throughout the day.
Activities to foster the concept of shape
Shape awareness is foundational to early numeracy and spatial reasoning. Classification – the ability to group objects based on features like shape – is a key cognitive milestone that develops during the concrete operational stage, and it is best approached through physical manipulation rather than abstract instruction.
Matching, sorting, and discriminating shapes
Children can collect and sort leaves by shape, fit cardboard cutouts into corresponding slots, or identify the “odd one out” from a group of shapes. Shape puzzles challenge children to fit shapes into corresponding spaces, promoting problem-solving and hand-eye coordination. Shape hunts – where children search the classroom for objects that match a given shape – add a movement component and connect learning to the real world (“the clock is a circle,” “the door is a rectangle”).
Constructive and tactile shape activities
Modeling shapes with clay or playdough, pressing wet sand into different containers to create molds, and building with blocks all give children a physical, three-dimensional encounter with shape. Drawing shapes in the air with a finger, on the floor, or in sand or flour allows children to internalize the forms with their body before moving to pencil and paper. This progression – body first, then tools, then paper – is especially well-suited for children who need more time to consolidate new concepts.
Activities to foster the concept of size
Understanding size – big and small, long and short, thick and thin – is among the first quantitative concepts children develop. For children with intellectual disabilities, size concepts need to be grounded in direct comparison using real, familiar objects.
Matching and comparing sizes
Simple matching and comparison activities form the starting point. Placing two fruits or vegetables of noticeably different sizes side by side and discussing “big” and “small” makes the concept concrete and immediate. Using the same type of object – two apples, two mangoes – keeps the comparison clean and avoids confusion from differing shapes. As children become confident with two items, a third is introduced, leading naturally to the next stage.
Seriation: ordering by size
Seriation is a form of ordering – arranging things according to a graduated sequence, most commonly by size. It is a significant cognitive step because it requires children to compare multiple objects simultaneously, not just two at a time. Arranging sticks from shortest to longest, stacking rings in size order, or lining up containers from smallest to largest are all excellent seriation activities that can be embedded in everyday play.
Seriation offers numerous cognitive benefits: it enhances logical thinking, improves early mathematical skills like sequencing and measurement, and builds a sense of accomplishment as children master the ordering of increasingly complex sets. For children with intellectual disabilities, starting with just three objects and expanding gradually – while using consistent language like “bigger than,” “shorter than,” and “the longest” – builds both the concept and the vocabulary needed to use it.
Using everyday items makes seriation meaningful: stack measuring cups from smallest to largest, arrange shoes by size, or order books by thickness. These practical applications help children see that size ordering is not just a classroom exercise – it is a useful way to understand and organize the world.
Connecting the dots: how these concepts build on each other
Body awareness, environmental understanding, and the concepts of color, shape, and size are not isolated learning goals. They are interconnected. A child who can sort objects by color is also practicing the same cognitive process used to sort by shape or size. A child who has traced their body outline has practiced spatial reasoning that feeds directly into shape awareness. Cognition encompasses perception, attention, pattern recognition, concept formation, and reasoning – and each hands-on activity described above exercises several of these capacities at once. When concept development activities are planned with this interconnectedness in mind, learning becomes cumulative rather than isolated, and children with intellectual disabilities build a genuine, usable understanding of the world around them.
