When we look at a child with an intellectual disability, what do we see first – what they struggle with, or what they’re capable of? For a long time, the default in education has been to lead with deficits: the gaps, the delays, the things a child cannot do. But a growing body of research and practice is pushing back on that view, firmly and with evidence. Focusing on a child’s abilities – their strengths, interests, and talents – is not just a feel-good philosophy. It’s a practical, proven approach that changes how children see themselves and how much they can grow. This post explores why making that shift matters and how educators and caregivers can create environments where it actually happens.

The problem with leading with deficits

Traditional approaches to intellectual disability have long been rooted in what researchers call a deficit-based model – one that catalogues what a child cannot do and treats those gaps as the starting point for all educational decisions. Scholar Michael Wehmeyer argues that this deficit orientation stems from a medical model of disability, which has conditioned special education to focus on pathology rather than potential. The result is a system where a child’s file – full of what they lack – shapes every teacher’s first impression, often before they’ve even met the child.

Research published in the International Journal of Whole Schooling confirms that deficit-based perspectives have measurable consequences: they reinforce low expectations, diminish collaboration between families and schools, and can effectively silence the voices of students themselves in decisions about their own education. When a child with an intellectual disability is consistently described in terms of their limitations, those descriptions tend to become self-fulfilling.

There is also a direct connection to self-concept – how a child perceives themselves. Studies on self-concept in children with intellectual disability have shown that negative self-concept and lower self-esteem tend to reinforce each other in a compounding cycle. A child who consistently hears what they cannot do begins to internalize that view, which in turn dampens motivation, effort, and social confidence.

Shifting to a strengths-based perspective

A strengths-based approach does not ignore a child’s challenges – it simply refuses to let those challenges define the child. According to the UNESCO IBE Science of Learning Portal, a strengths-based approach actively identifies and acknowledges individuals’ strengths, talents, and abilities across academic, social, emotional, and practical domains – including cognitive strengths that may exist even alongside certain difficulties. The approach centres on three dimensions: identifying strengths, building agency and self-determination, and fostering a growth mindset.

What does this look like in practice? Writing for ASCD’s Educational Leadership, researchers point out that children with intellectual disabilities often have distinctive personality and emotional strengths – warmth, sociability, enthusiasm – that are frequently overlooked in favour of cognitive benchmarks. Children with Down syndrome, for example, are widely noted for their sociable, affectionate qualities. Other children with intellectual disabilities may have strong musical memory, excellent visual processing, or notable persistence. Once educators begin actively looking for these strengths, they find them.

The practical starting point is deliberate observation. Education advocate Dr. Caitlin Solone of UCLA recommends that teachers and families ask themselves questions designed to shift their own perspective – identifying what a child already does well, what lights them up, and what they gravitate toward. Educators can gather this information through strengths inventories, success portfolios of the child’s work and accomplishments, and direct conversation with families.

How a positive focus builds a child’s self-concept

The link between a strengths-based approach and healthy self-concept is well established. A study in the Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs highlights that creating a supportive and encouraging school environment is essential for students with intellectual disability to develop a positive self-concept – and that this positive self-concept is itself an important educational outcome, not just a by-product of academic success.

When children experience consistent recognition of their strengths, they begin to build a more accurate and affirming picture of who they are. A 2024 systematic review in the journal Brain Sciences identified that key contributors to a positive self-concept in individuals with intellectual disability include perception of control and family support – both of which can be directly shaped by the attitudes and practices of educators. Recognising ability rather than cataloguing deficit sends a consistent message: you are capable, you belong, and your contributions matter.

This matters even more because self-concept formed in childhood tends to be durable. Research on children with learning disabilities has found that social support – especially from classmates – is the strongest predictor of high self-concept, more influential than academic performance alone. An environment built around a child’s strengths creates the social conditions for that support to flourish.

Creating a supportive environment for growth

Consciously shifting focus to a child’s abilities is a start, but the environment around the child must also actively support that growth. Research and best practice consistently point to several key elements that make this possible.

Being open to the child’s ideas

Children with intellectual disability are often on the receiving end of decisions made for them rather than with them. Reversing this requires educators to genuinely listen to and respond to a child’s ideas, interests, and preferences – even when those ideas are unconventional or unexpected. Early childhood research on fostering creativity identifies an atmosphere of trust and acceptance as foundational: children need to feel that their ideas will be received without judgment before they will risk offering them. When a child’s idea is taken seriously, it signals that their thinking has value.

Tolerating a degree of disorder

Creative learning is rarely tidy. Allowing children to move materials around, try things that don’t work, and explore without a fixed outcome is part of how engagement and ownership develop. This is not about abandoning structure – it’s about recognising that some messiness is a sign of active thinking. Educators working with children with developmental disabilities note that expressing creativity boosts confidence, particularly for children who face significant challenges in more traditional academic tasks. The freedom to create – imperfectly – is itself therapeutic and developmental.

Giving ample time

Children with intellectual disability frequently need more time to process, respond, and produce. Rushing a child through an activity or imposing rigid time limits undermines both their confidence and their output. Next-generation learning research emphasises that instruction must continue until mastery is demonstrated at each child’s pace – fixed-pace models, where the curriculum moves on regardless of individual readiness, are among the most damaging structures for children with intellectual disabilities. Giving ample time is not indulgence; it is appropriate, individualised practice.

Encouraging choice

Choice-making is one of the most powerful tools for building both self-determination and motivation in children with intellectual disability. Research on choice and autonomy in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities establishes that giving children opportunities to make decisions – even small ones about materials, activities, or the order of tasks – fosters self-efficacy, engagement, and problem-solving skills. These are foundational to self-determination in adult life. Choice should be structured and age-appropriate, but it should be a genuine feature of the child’s daily experience, not an afterthought.

The University of Nevada’s guidance on self-determination for children with disabilities recommends concrete practices: encouraging children to express preferences, try new things, evaluate their own strengths, and set simple goals. Displaying a child’s artwork in the classroom, discussing their unique characteristics with them, and encouraging self-regulation are all low-cost, high-impact strategies that communicate respect for the child’s agency.

Offering minimal interference

Over-protection is one of the most common and least recognised obstacles to growth for children with intellectual disability. When adults intervene too quickly – correcting, redirecting, or completing tasks on a child’s behalf – they deprive the child of the experience of working through difficulty and the satisfaction of reaching a solution. Best practice guidance is direct on this point: children with disabilities should not be overprotected beyond what would be typical for any child of the same age in the same situation. Stepping back, observing, and resisting the urge to intervene too soon sends a powerful message of confidence in the child’s ability.

Providing a stimulating environment

A rich, varied environment gives children with intellectual disability more opportunities to discover and demonstrate strengths that a narrow academic curriculum might never reveal. Research on inclusive early childhood classrooms shows that when children are offered multiple ways to engage – coding, drawing, building, storytelling, music – they can represent their ideas and problem-solve across different modalities. This matters because a child who struggles with written language might excel in spatial thinking, rhythm, or visual communication. Kids Included Together, an organisation with over 25 years of experience in disability inclusion, notes that inclusive environments leveraging each child’s unique skills drive creativity and strengthen the entire learning community, not just the individual child.

The role of language and attitude

All of the above practices depend on something more fundamental: the conscious, ongoing commitment of educators and caregivers to approach each child with a genuinely positive attitude. Language shapes perception – both the adult’s and the child’s. Inclusion researcher Dr. Shelley Moore identifies the shift from interpretive-negative language (which frames observations as deficits) to descriptive or positive-interpretive language as one of the most significant changes an educator can make. How a child is described – in reports, in conversations with parents, in the classroom – shapes how that child is perceived and treated, which in turn shapes how they see themselves.

Educators who approach children with intellectual disability through a lens of genuine curiosity about their strengths, and who communicate that curiosity consistently, create the conditions for a child’s positive self-concept to develop and stabilise over time. This is not a one-time adjustment – it is a practice, built through deliberate reflection and ongoing effort.
