What the maintenance stage is really about
The maintenance stage is the point in the learning process where a child can perform a skill independently, but without continued opportunities to use it, that skill is at risk of being forgotten. This is true for all learners, but it carries particular weight for children with intellectual disabilities, who may need more structured approaches to skill retention. Research in learning and memory has long confirmed what teachers observe in the classroom: skills that are not revisited regularly tend to fade. The goal of the maintenance stage is for learners to continue demonstrating their abilities independently – even after weeks or months without direct instruction on that skill.
Think of it as the difference between knowing something and keeping that knowledge. Acquiring a skill is only half the work. Keeping it accessible and usable over time requires a deliberate, planned approach. For children with intellectual disabilities, who often show limitations in short-term and working memory, this stage is not optional – it is essential.
Periodic practice: the primary maintenance strategy
The single most important strategy during the maintenance stage is periodic practice – asking the child to perform a previously learned task at planned, regular intervals. This is not the same as reteaching. The skill is already in the child’s repertoire. Periodic practice simply ensures it stays there by bringing it back into active use before it has a chance to deteriorate completely.
In practice, this looks like a brief review exercise at the beginning of a session before introducing a new related activity. If a child has learned to wash their hands independently, the teacher checks and prompts the child to demonstrate that skill at the start of the hygiene session, before moving on to teaching face-washing. It is a structured, routine revisit – not a test, but a maintenance check that reinforces the neural pathway supporting that skill.
The neuroscience behind it
Why does periodic practice actually work? The answer lies in how the brain stores memories. When a new skill is learned, connections between neurons are formed. These connections represent the memory of how to perform that skill. Over time – and this is Ebbinghaus’s well-documented forgetting curve – those connections weaken if not reactivated. Each time a skill is revisited, even briefly, the relevant neural pathways are strengthened and the memory becomes more durable and resistant to forgetting.
Importantly, revisiting a skill after a gap in time is actually more effective than drilling it repeatedly in the same session. When a learner retrieves something after a period of not using it, they are actively reconstructing both the skill and the retrieval pathways that lead to it – making the memory more accessible the next time around. This is why “practice it again right away” is a weaker strategy for long-term retention than “come back to it later.”
For children with intellectual disabilities, this matters even more. Research on cognitive training in children with intellectual disability confirms that any training program must be repeated regularly over time to be effective. The brain needs repeated exposure across multiple sessions – not a single intensive block – to consolidate skills into stable, long-term memory.
How to implement periodic practice effectively
Periodic practice is most effective when it is planned, consistent, and integrated into the existing routine rather than treated as an add-on. Here are the key principles teachers and support staff should keep in mind.
Space out the reviews over increasing intervals
Research on the spacing effect consistently shows that longer gaps between practice sessions are associated with better long-term retention. A newly learned skill might be reviewed daily for the first week, then every few days, then weekly, then monthly. As the skill becomes more stable, the intervals between reviews can gradually expand. A large body of research confirms the universal benefit of spaced repetition on long-term retention across learning contexts. This principle applies directly to skill maintenance in children with intellectual disabilities – not just vocabulary or academic content, but functional, everyday skills too.
Use revision as a natural bridge to new learning
One of the most practical and effective ways to embed periodic practice is to use it as a warm-up before each related new activity. Before introducing a new skill, the teacher asks the child to demonstrate the previously learned, related skill first. This serves two purposes: it reinforces the older skill (maintenance), and it establishes a foundation for the new learning (readiness). It also keeps sessions structured and predictable, which is especially important for children with intellectual disabilities, who benefit from consistent routines and predictable classroom structures.
Keep the practice brief and positive
Periodic practice during the maintenance stage does not need to be lengthy. A short, focused check – “Can you show me how to do X?” – is sufficient. What matters is that it happens regularly. The review should feel like a familiar, achievable routine rather than an evaluation. Positive reinforcement during these checks is essential. Verbal praise and specific positive feedback help reinforce correct responses and keep the child motivated to engage. For children with intellectual disabilities, maintaining confidence is as important as maintaining the skill itself.
Embed practice into daily activities
Wherever possible, maintenance practice should be woven into naturally occurring daily routines rather than isolated into separate drill sessions. A child who has learned to identify coins can practice that skill during snack-time when paying for a biscuit. A child who has learned to write their name can be asked to sign a classroom chart each morning. This kind of embedded practice makes the skill meaningful, contextual, and self-reinforcing – which in turn supports genuine long-term retention rather than rote, context-bound performance. Bringing skill practice into normal school activities is not only feasible but has been shown to be effective for children with learning and intellectual disabilities.
Why cramming and massed practice fall short
It is worth being explicit about what periodic practice is not. Massed practice – repeating a skill many times in a single session without spacing – may produce short-term performance but does not reliably lead to long-term retention. When learners cram, the brain does not have sufficient time to shift information from working memory into long-term memory. Studies comparing massed and spaced approaches consistently show significant declines in performance among students who used massed practice when tested later. For children with intellectual disabilities, who already face challenges in memory consolidation, relying on massed practice is an approach that works against the learner.

Teachers should keep simple records of whether the child performed the skill correctly, independently, and with appropriate speed during each periodic review. This tracking does two things: it tells the teacher when a skill genuinely needs to be retaught (if performance drops significantly), and it provides tangible evidence of progress over time, which is motivating for both the child and their family.
For children with intellectual disabilities whose educational goals are outlined in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), maintenance objectives should be explicitly included in that plan. Skill maintenance is not assumed – it must be actively designed for, with review schedules, recording methods, and responsibility assigned to specific staff members or caregivers.
The role of families in maintenance
Maintenance doesn’t end at the classroom door. For children with intellectual disabilities, consistency between school and home environments significantly improves skill retention. When families understand which skills are being maintained and how to provide brief, positive practice opportunities at home, the frequency of exposure increases naturally. Teachers can support this by sharing simple, clear guidance – a short checklist, a visual prompt, or a brief demonstration – so that caregivers feel confident participating in the maintenance process without needing specialist training. Family involvement is a recognised component of effective educational planning for children with intellectual disabilities, and maintenance is no different.
From maintenance to independence
The ultimate aim of maintaining a skill is not just repetition for its own sake – it is building the kind of stable, automatized competence that supports independence. When a skill is thoroughly maintained, it can be performed with less cognitive effort, freeing up the child’s attention for newer, more complex tasks. The goal of education for children with intellectual disabilities is to promote independence and self-determination, and maintenance is the bridge between a newly taught skill and a genuinely useful, lifelong capability.
Periodic practice, embedded into daily routines, spaced across increasing intervals, and supported by positive reinforcement and consistent monitoring, is not a complicated strategy. But it is a profoundly important one. It is what transforms a skill a child once learned into a skill they will always have.
