Walk into most university classrooms and you’ll find a single instructor at the front, responsible for everything – designing the course, delivering lectures, managing discussions, and grading student work. This model has endured for centuries, but it comes with an obvious limitation: no single educator can be equally strong in every dimension of a complex subject. That’s exactly the gap that team teaching is designed to close. By bringing two or more educators into a shared instructional space, team teaching redistributes expertise, enriches the student experience, and reshapes how knowledge is built in the classroom.

What is team teaching?

At its core, team teaching is an instructional model where two or more educators collaboratively plan, deliver, and assess a course or set of lessons for the same group of students. According to Davis (1995), a widely cited definition describes it as “all arrangements that include two or more faculty in some level of collaboration in the planning and delivery of a course.” This deliberately broad definition reflects how flexible the model actually is in practice – it spans everything from two teachers sharing a single classroom simultaneously to instructors taking turns across different units of a course.

Styles of team teaching

Team teaching is not a single method but a family of approaches. The style a team adopts depends on the course content, the teachers’ areas of expertise, and the needs of students. Four styles are particularly relevant in educational practice.

Subject specialization

In this style, each teacher takes primary responsibility for a specific content area within the course.
