Multiple-choice questions are quick to grade and easy to administer online, but they only tell you so much. Can a student who scores 90% on an MCQ quiz actually explain a concept, argue a position, or apply knowledge to a new situation? Often, the answer is no. That’s why educators in higher education are increasingly turning to richer, web-based assessment methods-ones that measure not just what students know, but what they can do. From recorded presentations to digital seminars, authoring tasks to interactive simulations, these tools open up a far more complete picture of student learning.

Why go beyond MCQs?

There’s a well-documented gap between what traditional tests measure and the skills graduates actually need. As TAO Testing notes, standard multiple-choice formats cannot accurately measure higher-order skills like creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and operating in multimedia contexts-all of which are central to 21st-century professional life. Alternative assessments shift the focus from recalling memorized information to performing meaningful, authentic tasks that require analysis, evaluation, and creation-the higher tiers of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The good news is that web-based tools now make these richer assessments more practical and scalable than ever before.

Direct presentation tools: evaluating student presentations online

Student presentations have always been a powerful way to assess comprehension and communication. Online environments don’t eliminate this-they change how it happens. Today, educators have two main formats to work with: synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) online presentations, each with distinct advantages.

Synchronous presentations via web conferencing

Platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams allow students to present live to their peers and instructors, share their screens, and field questions in real time. Emory University’s Digital Matters resource points out that live online presentations can help students feel more connected to the class, especially in remote contexts where in-person interaction is limited. The technical setup is straightforward: students share their screen to display slides, and the instructor moderates as they would in a face-to-face session. This format is effective for assessing not just content knowledge but also real-time critical thinking, poise under pressure, and the ability to respond to questions.

Asynchronous video presentations

Not every course schedule can accommodate live presentations for an entire cohort. Asynchronous tools fill that gap. Microsoft Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is one of the most widely adopted platforms for this purpose. Resilient Educator describes it as a free web and mobile app that allows educators to create safe online spaces where students share ideas through short videos, text notes, or audio messages, at their own convenience. Instructors can set up topics, review submissions, and even track engagement through built-in analytics. A key advantage is academic integrity: because Flip is integrated with Microsoft’s Single Sign-On system, Times Higher Education notes that it provides identity-verified assessment, ensuring the person on camera is the actual enrolled student. Research published in PMC confirms that oral assignments and presentations through Flip increase instructor awareness of student understanding of course concepts while also providing an effective method of formative assessment that prevents impersonation-a persistent challenge in written online work.

Beyond Canvas Studio and Flip, instructors can grade video submissions directly within their Learning Management System (LMS) using built-in tools like Canvas Speedgrader, making the workflow manageable even for large classes. The asynchronous format also frees up synchronous class time for richer discussion and feedback.

Electronic seminars and conferencing: web-based discussions as assessment

The seminar-a structured discussion where students engage critically with course material-is one of higher education’s most enduring pedagogical tools. In the online environment, it takes the form of the e-seminar, conducted either synchronously through web conferencing or asynchronously through discussion forums and text-based platforms.

Asynchronous e-seminars

Asynchronous online discussions are one of the most researched forms of web-based assessment. A study published in the Journal of Research on Technology in Education found that asynchronous online discussions facilitate a multidimensional process of assessment, demonstrated through structure, self-regulatory activities, learner autonomy, learning community formation, and the development of student writing skills. Students valued these discussions as an essential component of their online learning experience. For instructors, a major benefit is visibility: as the University of Michigan’s Online Teaching resource explains, facilitators have access to every participating student’s written thoughts on a topic, something rarely possible in a live classroom setting. This written record can be assessed against rubrics that evaluate depth of analysis, engagement with peers, and use of evidence.

Synchronous web conferencing seminars

Live web conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Meet, and Webex replicate the immediate back-and-forth of a face-to-face seminar. A meta-analysis published in ScienceDirect found that webinars were slightly more effective than asynchronous learning management systems and face-to-face classroom instruction in promoting student achievement, though the differences were modest. What webinars offer distinctly is real-time interaction-the ability for instructors to pose a question, gauge student responses through polling, use breakout rooms for small group work, and bring in guest speakers from anywhere in the world. Research published in PMC notes that synchronous communication technology enhances the development of community and social presence in online courses, a factor strongly linked to student satisfaction and engagement. For assessment purposes, instructors can evaluate participation quality, argumentation, and peer engagement in real time, with recordings available for review.

A well-designed e-seminar assessment typically combines both modes: asynchronous posts for initial responses and reflection, followed by a live session where students build on those ideas collaboratively.

Authoring tasks and simulations: students as content creators

Perhaps the most underused category of web-based assessment involves asking students not to answer questions, but to build something. Authoring tasks and digital simulations flip the assessment script entirely-students become creators, and the product they produce is what gets evaluated.

ePortfolios as structured authoring tasks

An ePortfolio is a curated digital collection of a student’s work, often accompanied by reflective commentary. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) describes ePortfolios as a means for direct assessment of student work drawn from the curriculum, co-curriculum, and beyond the campus-particularly when paired with rubrics focused on integrative learning. Ohio State University’s Teaching and Learning Resource Center notes that ePortfolios deepen learning as students engage in reflective practice and metacognitive thinking, while also supporting the development of professional skills like digital literacy, writing, and self-evaluation. Unlike a single exam, an ePortfolio captures growth over time-making it suitable for both formative and summative assessment. Platforms like Google Sites, Canvas, and Mahara are commonly used, and most integrate directly into an institution’s LMS.

Digital simulations and interactive content

Simulations take web-based assessment into more immersive territory. TAO Testing highlights that interactive simulations help students navigate real-life scenarios, stretching creative thinking and collaborative skills. A compelling example comes from the French Ministry of Education, which developed a simulation where students collaborate with a chatbot to co-write a story-with the assessment measuring their reasoning and negotiation skills as they accept or reject the chatbot’s suggestions. For health sciences, business, and STEM fields, tools like Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline 360 allow instructors to build branching scenarios where students make decisions and see the consequences play out. The UCSF Library’s e-learning authoring tool assessment recommends H5P as a free, browser-based option for creating interactive content, and Adobe Captivate or Storyline 360 for more complex simulations requiring detailed branching logic.

Authoring tools can also be used by students themselves as the assessment task. Asking students to build a short interactive module, a narrated screencast, or a digital case study requires them to deeply understand content before they can teach it-activating some of the most powerful mechanisms for long-term learning.

How these tools enhance collaborative learning

One of the strongest arguments for alternative web-based assessments is what they do for collaboration. Peer learning, joint problem-solving, and cross-cultural exchange are not side effects-they are built into the design of these tools.

Flip’s video discussion threads, for instance, allow students to respond to each other’s presentations with video feedback, creating an interactive community of learners. Research from the University of Sussex describes this interactive thread as a kind of narrative device where students collaborate to develop their ideas, making it an ideal vehicle for formative or summative portfolio evidence. Synchronous web conferencing seminars open the door to collaboration across geographies-students in different countries can work together on shared problems, preparing them for the realities of distributed professional teams.

Simulations add another dimension: they can be designed to require coordination, negotiation, and division of tasks, mirroring real-world project environments. The University of North Dakota’s Center for Instructional and Learning Technologies emphasizes that alternative assessments challenge students through meaningful and authentic tasks, accommodate diverse learning styles, and encourage deeper engagement with course material-all hallmarks of effective collaborative learning. When students know their work will be seen and responded to by peers-not just silently graded by an instructor-the quality and depth of engagement tends to increase significantly.

That said, these methods are not without challenges. Rubric design requires more care than for an MCQ quiz. Equitable access to reliable internet and devices must be considered. And students who are unfamiliar with video-based or simulation tools need adequate scaffolding before the assessment begins. When these practical concerns are addressed thoughtfully, however, the payoff in learning quality is substantial.

Choosing the right tool for the right outcome

No single web-based assessment method suits every course or learning objective. Indiana University Bloomington’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning advises instructors to think precisely about what they want to assess before selecting a format-whether that’s communication skill, critical thinking, creativity, or applied knowledge. A useful starting point is Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy: lower-order objectives (remembering, understanding) are adequately measured by MCQs, while higher-order objectives (applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating) call for presentations, simulations, seminars, or authoring tasks.

Practically speaking, a blended approach often works best. Objective quizzes can handle foundational content checks, while a mid-term video presentation, a live e-seminar, and a final ePortfolio together build a rich, multi-dimensional assessment picture across a course. Each format contributes evidence that the others cannot, and together they give a far more honest account of what a student has actually learned.
