What happens when a child is born into poverty, loses their sight, and is told – repeatedly, by schools, by systems, and by society – that they simply cannot go further? For most, the story would end there. For Srikanth Bolla, it was only the beginning. Born blind in a small village in Andhra Pradesh, Srikanth grew up to become the first international blind student admitted to MIT, and later the founder of a multi-crore enterprise that employs hundreds of persons with disabilities. His journey is not just inspiring – it is a direct challenge to every discriminatory assumption our education systems and societies continue to hold about disability.

A birth that almost wasn’t celebrated

Srikanth Bolla was born on 7 July 1991 in Seetharamapuram, Machilipatnam, to a family of rice farmers in rural Andhra Pradesh. His parents were uneducated and had very limited financial means. The moment he arrived in the world, neighbours and relatives began advising his parents to abandon him, convinced that a blind child would be a burden and of no use as they grew older.

His parents refused. That quiet, courageous refusal was Srikanth’s first victory – and perhaps the most important one. Without their acceptance and support, none of what followed would have been possible. Despite having no electricity at home, no financial safety net, and no precedent of education in the family, they chose to nurture their child’s potential rather than surrender to social pressure.

This opening chapter of Srikanth’s life reveals something important: the first barriers a person with disability faces are rarely physical. They are social, attitudinal, and deeply embedded in community beliefs about what disabled people can or cannot contribute. For Srikanth, overcoming those beliefs began at home – and that foundation would carry him through every subsequent battle.

Discrimination inside the classroom

When Srikanth began attending a mainstream school, his experience was far from welcoming. He was frequently pushed to the last bench and excluded from active participation in school life, including sports and group activities. His classmates avoided him. His teachers doubted him. The implicit message was clear: a blind student did not belong in the same space as everyone else.

Eventually, he was moved to the Devnar School for the Blind in Hyderabad – a transition that, despite its initial difficulties, proved to be transformative. There, Srikanth learned Braille, mastered it rapidly, and discovered that he could not just keep up academically, but excel. He became a fast reader and writer, topped his classes, and went on to represent Andhra Pradesh in blind cricket and compete in chess at the national level. In his Class X board exams, he scored 98% and topped his class.

These achievements point to a reality that disability advocates have long argued: when students with disabilities are given an accessible, supportive environment, they do not just participate – they thrive. The problem was never Srikanth’s capability. It was the system’s unwillingness to accommodate him.

Fighting the law to study science

After topping Class X, Srikanth made a straightforward decision: he wanted to study science. What followed was anything but straightforward. A state law at the time barred blind students from pursuing science and mathematics at the senior secondary level, on the grounds that they would struggle with diagrams and graphs. Srikanth was told to study arts, languages, or social sciences instead.

He refused to accept this. Bolla appealed to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, challenging the law that restricted blind students from studying maths and science. After a six-month legal battle – with a teacher’s help – he won. The court ruled that visually impaired students could study science at state board schools across Andhra Pradesh. It was a landmark outcome, one that opened doors not just for Srikanth, but for future students like him.

What happened next silenced every sceptic. Srikanth studied science, gave the Class XII board exams, and scored an average of 98%, topping the examination. He had not just been permitted to study science against the system’s wishes – he had outperformed nearly everyone in it.

Srikanth’s court case was significant for a reason that goes beyond his individual story. Discriminatory policies in education – even well-intentioned ones dressed up as “protection” – can severely limit the futures of students with disabilities. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities explicitly recognises the right to inclusive education at all levels, which means students cannot be denied access to a particular stream or discipline solely on the basis of disability. Srikanth’s victory in Andhra Pradesh was a step toward aligning India’s educational practices with that global standard.

Shut out by Indian institutions – and MIT’s answer

With 98% in Class XII, Srikanth set his sights on India’s premier engineering colleges – the IITs. But once again, disability became a barrier. Engineering institutes, including the IITs, declined his application citing policy restrictions. Coaching centres, which are essential for cracking the highly competitive JEE entrance examination, also turned him away. The path to India’s top institutions was effectively closed to him – not because of his marks, but because of his blindness.

Srikanth’s response was to look elsewhere. He applied to universities abroad and received five admission offers. He chose the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was admitted as the first international blind student in the institution’s history, with 100 per cent financial aid – a remarkable distinction at one of the world’s most competitive universities.

There is a certain irony worth noting here. The institutions that rejected him on grounds of disability were surpassed by one of the most demanding academic environments in the world, which accepted him fully and funded his education entirely. Srikanth Bolla is today recognised as the first visually impaired international student to study Management Science at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

From MIT to Hyderabad: building what India lacked

After graduating from MIT, Srikanth had every opportunity to build a comfortable career in the United States. He chose not to. He left behind prospects in the US because he wanted to build products using renewable energy, made by people the world had labelled “useless” – people like himself.

He returned to Hyderabad and first co-founded the Samanvai Center for Children with Multiple Disabilities in 2011, which provided educational, vocational, and rehabilitation services to students with multiple disabilities. Through Samanvai, he and his co-founders impacted the lives of more than 4,000 students with multiple disabilities, helping them move toward economic independence.

In 2012, he took his next and largest step: founding Bollant Industries. Co-founded with his mentor and angel investor Ravi Mantha, the company began with a capital of approximately Rs 10 lakh. Today, it has grown into a multi-crore enterprise with five manufacturing plants across Hyderabad, Telangana, and Karnataka.

What Bollant Industries actually does

Bollant Industries is not just a business. It is a model that combines environmental sustainability with social inclusion. The company manufactures eco-friendly recycled Kraft paper from municipal waste, packaging products from recycled paper, and disposable products from natural leaf and recycled paper. It also recycles waste plastic into usable goods. Its plants run partly on solar power, and the company works toward being a zero-waste operation.

Crucially, Bollant’s workforce reflects Srikanth’s core mission. The company employs a workforce in which 36% are persons with physical disabilities, providing them with mainstream employment rather than charity. Through its five manufacturing plants, Bollant provides direct employment to around 500 people and indirect employment to approximately 2,500 more. Prominent investors including Ratan Tata have backed the company, further signalling the viability and importance of Srikanth’s inclusive business model.

Recognition that went global

The world took notice. Srikanth received the NDTV Indian of the Year Award in 2015, the National Entrepreneurship Award from the Government of India in 2019, and was named an Entrepreneur of the Globe by One Young World UK in the same year. He was featured in the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 list and named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2021 – one of the most selective global leadership designations, awarded to outstanding individuals under the age of 38 from across 70 nations.

His story also reached popular culture. In 2024, a Hindi biographical film titled Srikanth, starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, was released – bringing his journey to millions of viewers across India and beyond.

What his story means for how we understand disability

Srikanth Bolla’s life is sometimes reduced to a feel-good narrative of personal triumph over adversity. But it is worth reading it more carefully. At every stage – his birth, his schooling, his legal fight for science, his rejection by Indian institutions, his entrepreneurial return to India – the barriers he faced were not products of his blindness. They were products of systemic discrimination: social attitudes, exclusionary policies, and institutional assumptions about what people with disabilities could or could not do.

His success did not happen because those systems changed on their own. It happened because he challenged them directly – through legal action, through migration to a more inclusive institution, and ultimately through building a company that demonstrated, at scale, that employing persons with disabilities is not a compromise. It is smart, sustainable, and socially necessary.

The World Health Organization estimates that over 1.3 billion people globally live with some form of disability – roughly 16% of the world’s population. The majority of them continue to face barriers in education and employment that have nothing to do with their actual capabilities. Srikanth’s story is not exceptional because he succeeded despite being blind. It is exceptional because he had the resources, the resolve, and the legal access to fight back against systems that most people with disabilities encounter but cannot overcome.

Lessons for educators and institutions

For teachers and educational institutions, Srikanth Bolla’s journey raises pointed questions. His school pushed him to the last bench. His state board denied him the right to study science. Coaching centres turned him away without consideration. Each of these decisions was made by an educator or institution – people who were, presumably, in the business of helping students grow.

Inclusive education is not simply a policy target. It requires active, deliberate effort: accessible teaching materials, willingness to accommodate different learning styles, and – most importantly – a fundamental belief that all students, regardless of disability, are capable of reaching their potential when given the right environment. As Srikanth himself has demonstrated, the talent existed all along. What was missing was the opportunity.
