But what happens in the final few minutes is just as consequential, and it is far too often left to chance. The closing section of a lesson – known in pedagogical literature as recapitulation – is not a formality. It is the moment when learning either solidifies or slips away. Research consistently shows that how a class ends directly affects how well students retain and apply what they have learned. It also reveals whether students have connected the lesson’s content to a broader framework or are treating it as an isolated fact to memorize and forget.
Question stems framed around Bloom’s Taxonomy
Students write their own questions about the lesson using question stems tied to different levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy – from recall-level questions to those requiring analysis, evaluation, or synthesis. Partners then exchange cards and answer each other’s questions. This approach not only consolidates the lesson’s content but builds students’ metacognitive awareness of what level of understanding they have actually reached.
