A classroom full of 40 students, all listening to the same explanation at the same pace – this is still the dominant image of formal education. But for a student who is quietly confused about a concept, or one who has already grasped the material and needs a deeper challenge, that setting often falls short. This is precisely where tutorials step in. As a structured, face-to-face teaching method involving individual or small-group interaction between a teacher and students, tutorials offer something that large-class instruction simply cannot: focused, responsive, personalized learning support.

What is a tutorial in education?

In educational practice, a tutorial is a direct teaching session – either one-on-one or with a very small group of students – designed to address specific learning needs through dialogue, questioning, and guided problem-solving. According to the open textbook Teaching in a Digital Age, a tutorial is either a one-on-one session between a teacher and a student, or a very small group of three or four students and an instructor, where learners are at least as active in discussion and presentation of ideas as the teacher. This is a critical distinction: the student is not passive. They are expected to engage, respond, and think.

Tutorials are closely associated with elite academic institutions. At the University of Oxford, for instance, core teaching is built around conversations – usually between two or three students and a subject-expert tutor – and is considered central to the entire undergraduate experience. Each session lasts about an hour, during which the tutor gives feedback on the student’s prepared work and pushes them to present and defend their thinking. That model, while intensive, reflects the tutorial’s core strength: it demands intellectual participation in a way that mass instruction rarely does.

How tutorials differ from lectures and regular class sessions

The tutorial follows up by ensuring those concepts are understood, applied, and interrogated by each individual student. Together, they form a more complete learning experience than either could provide alone.

For tutorials to be effective, both teachers and students need to come prepared. Teachers should plan clear objectives for the session while remaining flexible enough to follow where the student’s understanding actually needs guidance.
