The teacher presents a real or hypothetical scenario without a conclusion, and students must analyze it, identify the issues, and propose solutions through discussion. This method links classroom learning to real-world application and is especially effective in subjects like law, medicine, business, and social studies where open-ended problem-solving is central to professional practice.
The role of the facilitator
A classroom discussion doesn’t run itself. The teacher’s role as a skilled facilitator is arguably the most critical factor in determining whether a discussion succeeds or falls flat. A good facilitator does several things simultaneously: poses strategic questions, listens carefully to student contributions, connects individual comments to the broader learning goal, and ensures that all students have an opportunity to participate.
