Most of us have sat through lectures where information flows in one direction – from the teacher to the student – while we furiously take notes and hope it sticks. It does work, but only up to a point. As education evolves, so does the need for teaching methods that go deeper than information transfer. Seminars are one such method, and the evidence for their impact on learning engagement is both clear and compelling. Unlike traditional lectures, seminars place students at the center of the learning process, requiring them to think, speak, question, and collaborate – all in the same session.

What exactly is a seminar?

A seminar is a structured, discussion-based learning method in which a small group of students explore a topic in depth under the guidance of a teacher or facilitator. According to a meta-analysis published in Medical Education, the seminar teaching model involves students working in small groups to discuss assigned questions and issues, with the goal of enabling them to learn through discussion and engagement with practical questions – not just passive reception of facts.

What distinguishes a seminar from a lecture is its fundamental orientation. In a lecture, the teacher is the primary communicator and students are largely recipients. In a seminar, that dynamic shifts. Students come prepared, contribute their own ideas, and engage with one another’s reasoning. The teacher steps back from the role of sole knowledge-giver and becomes a facilitator who steers discussion, prompts deeper thinking, and ensures the conversation remains productive.

How seminars differ from traditional lectures

The lecture format has long dominated higher education for good reason: it is efficient for covering large amounts of content with a large audience. However, its limitations in terms of student engagement are well-documented. A landmark study from Harvard University found that while students felt they learned more from polished traditional lectures, they actually scored significantly higher on assessments after active learning sessions – leading researchers to conclude that the perceived comfort of lectures can mask genuine gaps in learning.

Seminars address this gap directly. Rather than passively absorbing information, students in a seminar actively participate by asking questions, sharing opinions, and engaging in discussion on the topics being explored. This shift encourages students to take ownership of their learning and enhances their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. The interaction is multidirectional – between students, and between students and teacher – rather than the one-way flow typical of a lecture hall.

Types of seminars in education

Seminars are not one-size-fits-all. They are organised at different scales depending on the educational purpose and the target audience.

Mini seminars

These are small-scale sessions conducted at the classroom level. A teacher assigns a topic to a student or a small group, who then plans and presents it to peers, followed by a group discussion. The aim is to build foundational skills in organising and conducting a seminar, while also developing confidence in public speaking and academic reasoning.

Major or institutional seminars

These are organised at the departmental or institutional level, typically involving a larger group of students and faculty. The focus is usually on a current or significant topic relevant to the discipline, and they serve both educational and professional development purposes.

National and international seminars

At the broader end of the spectrum, national seminars bring together participants from multiple institutions across a country, while international seminars involve contributors and attendees from different countries. These are often organised in collaboration with government bodies or professional associations, and they expose participants to a wide diversity of perspectives on shared themes.

The impact of seminars on learning engagement

The benefits of the seminar method extend well beyond knowledge acquisition. A meta-analysis of 16 randomised controlled trials involving 1,122 medical students found that the seminar teaching method significantly improved knowledge scores, skill scores, active learning ability, student collaboration, classroom atmosphere, and teacher-student interaction – all when compared to traditional lecture-based learning.

Developing critical thinking

Critical thinking is widely recognised as one of the most essential outcomes of a sound education. The University of Connecticut’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning describes critical thinking as the foundation of a strong education – a process that moves students from simply knowing information to analysing, evaluating, and synthesising it. Seminars are particularly well-suited to this kind of higher-order thinking. Students arrive having engaged with material beforehand, and during the session, they are required to examine ideas from multiple angles, challenge assumptions, and defend their conclusions with evidence. This is fundamentally different from memorising a set of notes.

Education Week highlights the Socratic seminar as one of the most effective classroom strategies for developing critical thinking – a student-led discussion method in which participants pose thought-provoking questions to one another, listen carefully, and think critically about differing perspectives. The process of formulating questions and responding to those of others sharpens analytical skills in ways that passive learning rarely achieves.

Building communication skills

In a seminar, students must express their ideas clearly, listen actively to others, question constructively, and respond logically. Research on the seminar method indicates that it develops both fluency and confidence in learners, helping them build skills in presenting arguments, accepting criticism, and engaging in professional dialogue. The facilitative teacher, in other words, is not a passive presence – they are central to the seminar’s success.

Limitations to keep in mind

The seminar method is not without its challenges. It requires students to come prepared, which is not always the case. It can be difficult to manage in large groups, since the format works best with smaller cohorts where each participant has a genuine opportunity to contribute. Some students, particularly those less accustomed to speaking in group settings, may find the format initially uncomfortable. Research in the English Language Teaching journal notes that while the majority of students in seminar-based programmes reported benefits to their communication and critical thinking, a minority found the preparation demands time-consuming, and some preferred independent working styles.

These limitations point not to weaknesses in the method itself, but to the importance of thoughtful implementation. Setting clear preparation expectations, establishing ground rules for respectful discussion, and using smaller group sizes wherever possible are all practical steps that improve seminar effectiveness.

Seminars beyond the classroom

The seminar model is not confined to formal education. In professional development contexts, seminars are widely used to help practitioners stay current with evolving knowledge in their fields, develop new skills, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. The same principles that make seminars effective for students – interactive discussion, multiple perspectives, shared responsibility for learning – apply with equal force to continuing professional education. This transferability underlines the broader value of seminar-based learning: it builds habits of mind, not just bodies of knowledge.
