When we talk about educating children with intellectual disabilities at the primary school level, the conversation often centers on the child – what skills they need, what support they require, what goals they should work toward. But here’s a perspective that tends to get overlooked: it’s not just the child who needs to be ready for school. The school needs to be ready for the child. This dual responsibility – preparing both the learner and the learning environment – forms the foundation of meaningful, inclusive primary education for children with intellectual disabilities. Understanding what this preparation looks like, who it involves, and what tools make it possible is the first step for any educator or caregiver entering this space.

Understanding school readiness – for both sides of the door

School readiness is often defined from one direction: is the child equipped to enter a classroom?
