It is the foundation of independence. Yet many traditional teaching methods fall short because they rely heavily on verbal instruction, abstract concepts, and fine motor tasks that these students often find genuinely difficult. This is where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is making a real and measurable difference. From smartphone videos and visual schedule apps to assistive writing tools and emotion-support platforms, digital tools are reshaping how life skills are taught – one manageable step at a time.

Why ICT matters in life skills education
Life skills education for students with intellectual disabilities goes well beyond the classroom. It covers personal hygiene, routine management, communication, and emotional self-regulation – all skills that are critical for adult independence. Research consistently shows that ICT has the potential to promote independence and reduce reliance on staff when students have access to personalised equipment and supportive guidance. The same research notes that using mainstream digital technology – rather than tools that look visibly “different” – also helps students feel included rather than singled out.
According to the World Bank’s Inclusive Education Initiative, selecting the right technology for learners with disabilities requires careful consideration of access, age-appropriateness, the student’s level of digital skills, and their specific physical and cognitive needs. There is no single solution that works for every child – but there is a growing toolkit of digital approaches that educators can draw from strategically. Four of the most practical and effective are explored below.
Video-based instructional methods
One of the most powerful ways to teach life skills to students with intellectual disabilities is through video. Students with intellectual disabilities typically require direct instruction and repetition to successfully acquire everyday tasks, and video-based instruction addresses both needs at once – students can watch the same demonstration as many times as they need, pausing and replaying without any pressure.
Consider a teacher like Mrs. Meera, who uses the InShot app on her smartphone to record short instructional videos. She films a task like handwashing, breaking it into small, clearly sequenced steps, using slow-motion where needed and adding on-screen subtitles to reinforce each action. These videos are then played on a smartboard or tablet in the classroom while she provides real-time guidance alongside.
This approach directly reflects what researchers call video prompting – showing students one portion of a target skill and having them perform it step by step. A 2023 study published in the Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities found that video prompting to teach daily living skills resulted in effect size gains of 99-100% for participants with intellectual disabilities. The study also found that video prompting can decrease reliance on teachers and caregivers while improving self-confidence and autonomy.
The key instructional principle behind this approach is task analysis – breaking a complex activity into manageable, teachable steps that students can complete sequentially. As the CEEDAR Center at the University of Florida notes, there is a strong evidence base for using task-analytic instruction to teach daily living and community skills to students with intellectual disabilities. Video recordings, especially when made with familiar faces and real-life settings, make those steps concrete and repeatable.
Why it works
Video instruction engages students visually and auditorily at the same time, which suits many learners with intellectual disabilities who may find purely verbal explanations difficult to follow. Slow-motion demonstrations allow students to see the exact movement required, and subtitles ensure that key action words are reinforced on screen. Playing these on a large smartboard in class also means the whole group benefits simultaneously, with the teacher free to circulate and provide individualised support rather than repeatedly demonstrating the same task by hand.
Digital schedules and routine management
Predictability is not a luxury for students with intellectual disabilities – it is a genuine need. Unexpected transitions, unclear expectations, or abrupt shifts from one activity to another can trigger significant anxiety and behavioural distress. This is why visual schedules are considered one of the most well-established support tools in special education.
Digital visual schedules take this support further. Apps like Choiceworks allow teachers and caregivers to build customised, picture-based schedules that display “first-then” sequences – a simple and powerful structure that tells students what is happening now and what comes next. Choiceworks features four board types – Schedule, Waiting, Feelings, and Feelings Scale – and allows users to check off completed tasks, view timers, and receive audio confirmation as each step is marked “all done.” The app is widely used in classrooms and homes and can be personalised with the student’s own photos for maximum relevance.
Teachers can also build equally effective visual schedules using familiar tools like PowerPoint slides, where each slide displays a picture and a word representing the next activity. Research in ABA therapy settings confirms that by presenting a clear, visual outline of tasks and activities, visual schedules allow students to understand what to expect next, which directly reduces feelings of unpredictability and anxiety. This is especially important during transitions – moving from a preferred activity to a less preferred one, or from free time to structured work.
How to implement effectively
The schedule should be displayed at the student’s eye level, referenced consistently throughout the day, and updated whenever routines change. Students should be explicitly taught how to use the schedule – pointing to each image, checking items off, and looking ahead to what’s next. Over time, this builds a habit of self-directed routine management, which is itself a foundational life skill. Whether delivered through an app or a PowerPoint presentation on a classroom tablet, the underlying goal is the same: give students a visual roadmap that they can navigate with growing independence.
Assistive writing and communication tools
For many students with intellectual disabilities, the physical act of writing is a significant barrier. Fine motor difficulties, tremors, limited hand strength, or conditions such as dyspraxia can make holding a pencil and forming legible letters genuinely exhausting – so much so that it interferes with the actual learning content. When a student spends all their cognitive energy trying to write neatly, they have little left for understanding the concept being taught.
The SnapType app addresses this directly. Developed by an occupational therapist, SnapType allows students to photograph or import a paper worksheet, then type their answers directly onto the image using a tablet keyboard. There is no need for handwriting at all – students tap where they want to type, enter their response, and can even use speech-to-text to dictate answers if keyboard use is still developing. The completed worksheet can be saved digitally or printed with the typed answers in place.
According to the Tennessee Assistive Technology Network, SnapType is designed specifically for students with dysgraphia, dyslexia, visual impairments, and motor challenges including tremors and cerebral palsy. It supports independence and boosts confidence by making schoolwork more accessible. The app also includes text-to-speech support, reading worksheet questions aloud, and coloured overlays for students with visual sensitivities.
What this means for the classroom
When students with motor difficulties are given a tool like SnapType, the classroom dynamic shifts meaningfully. School District 197 in Minnesota, which formally includes SnapType in its assistive technology programme, describes it as a solution considered for “students with significant fine motor impairments impacting their ability to produce legible handwriting.” Rather than modifying or simplifying the learning task, the tool removes the physical barrier – allowing the student’s actual knowledge and understanding to show through. That is a critical distinction: the goal is not to reduce expectations, but to ensure the method of response does not unfairly limit what a student can demonstrate.
It is worth noting that assistive technologies promote independence by enabling students with disabilities to perform tasks on their own, rather than waiting for a teacher or peer to assist. For a student who has previously been unable to complete worksheets without one-to-one adult support, being able to work independently – even partially – is a significant developmental achievement.
Emotional support and self-regulation
Life skills are not only practical – they are also emotional. The ability to identify what you are feeling, name it, and respond to it without becoming overwhelmed is a skill that many students with intellectual disabilities find genuinely hard. Emotional dysregulation can disrupt the entire school day, leading to outbursts, withdrawal, or an inability to engage with learning. Supporting emotional self-regulation is therefore not a “soft” add-on to life skills instruction – it is central to it.
Digital tools are proving increasingly useful here. Apps like Mood Meter and Avaz Feelings use emojis and visual representations of emotions to help students identify how they are feeling in the moment. Avaz allows users to select tones that reflect their intended emotion or inflection, and its vocabulary is fully customisable – including page sets specifically designed around self-regulation, personal boundaries, and emotional expression. The visual layout is clean and accessible for users with varying cognitive and motor needs.
Alongside these identification tools, calm-down videos – featuring guided breathing exercises, nature visuals, or soothing music – can serve as digital regulation supports. A student who is beginning to feel overwhelmed can be directed to a pre-loaded calm-down video on a classroom tablet, giving them a concrete, self-managed strategy to de-escalate rather than simply waiting for adult intervention. Research published in Computers & Education evaluated a tablet-based emotion regulation application across adolescents with ASD and intellectual disabilities in mainstream schools, finding it a feasible and relevant support tool for classroom-based emotional regulation – particularly when built on well-proven intervention approaches from special education practice.
Building emotional vocabulary through visuals
A critical element of emotional support for students with intellectual disabilities is building an emotional vocabulary – the ability to name what one is feeling with more precision than just “good” or “bad.” Common Sense Education notes that students need the capacity to recognise their own emotions, distinguish between different feelings, and label them appropriately. Emoji-based apps are particularly well suited to this because they present emotions visually, concretely, and without relying on reading ability. A student who cannot yet read the word “frustrated” can point to a face that looks like how they feel – and that is a meaningful first step toward self-awareness and self-regulation.
When a student can identify their emotional state and choose a coping strategy – whether that means pressing play on a breathing video, squeezing a tactile object, or asking for a short break – they are practising genuine executive function. Over time, with consistent use of these digital supports, many students begin to internalise these strategies, reaching for their tablet less often as the regulation skills become habits.
Putting it all together: ICT as a bridge to independence
What unites all four of these digital approaches – video instruction, visual schedules, assistive writing tools, and emotional support apps – is a shared purpose: reducing barriers between students with intellectual disabilities and the life skills they need. Video-based instruction is an effective instructional technology that involves words, pictures, and actions to promote learning, and when combined with real-time teacher guidance and structured repetition, it becomes a genuinely powerful vehicle for skill development.
None of these tools replaces the teacher. What they do is free the teacher from having to be the only source of instruction, repetition, and support in the room. A student watching a video prompt on a tablet can self-pace. A student using Choiceworks can manage their own transition without needing a verbal reminder every five minutes. A student with SnapType can complete their worksheet while the teacher supports a different student. This is how ICT expands what is possible in an inclusive classroom – not by doing the teacher’s job, but by multiplying the moments in which every student can learn and function independently.
