What are teaching aids and media?

Media, on the other hand, refers to the channels through which educational content is delivered – print, audio, video, or digital formats. Together, teaching aids and media form the toolkit that helps educators present information in ways that are tangible, visual, and multisensory.
A useful distinction worth noting: teaching aids support and supplement the teacher’s instruction, while media programmes are structured content delivered through specific channels like radio broadcasts, educational films, or digital courseware. Both aim to make learning stick – but they do so in different ways.
Historical roots: pioneers of visual and sensory learning
The idea that students learn better when they can see, hear, and touch – not just read or listen – is not new. Several key thinkers across centuries championed this approach long before modern technology made it mainstream.
Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536)
Erasmus, the great Renaissance humanist, is best known for his contributions to classical scholarship and Christian reform. But he was also deeply invested in education.
