Why learning experiences matter more than content delivery
There’s a difference between teaching content and creating learning experiences. Content delivery is one-directional – a teacher speaks, students listen. A learning experience, on the other hand, is a two-way process where students actively participate, question, apply, and reflect. Research consistently shows that when classroom activities are designed as structured experiences rather than passive lectures, students retain more, understand deeper, and perform better over time.
Effective learning experiences share a few common traits: they connect to clear educational goals, they challenge students to think rather than just recall, and they respect the diverse backgrounds students bring into the room. Let’s look at each of these in detail.
Aligning learning experiences with educational objectives
One of the most important (and often overlooked) practices in teaching is making sure that every classroom activity directly connects to a defined learning objective. Without this alignment, teachers risk spending time on activities that feel engaging but don’t lead to measurable outcomes.
The backward design approach
A widely recommended method for achieving this alignment is backward design, a concept championed by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins. Instead of starting with activities and hoping they lead to learning, backward design starts with the end goal. Teachers first define what students should know or be able to do, then design assessments to measure that learning, and only then plan the activities that will get students there.

Dale’s Cone of Experience: from concrete to abstract
No discussion of classroom learning experiences is complete without mentioning Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience. First introduced in 1946 in his book Audiovisual Methods in Teaching, this model remains a valuable tool for educators planning how to deliver content through different media and methods.
What the Cone of Experience actually shows
The Cone is a visual model that arranges learning experiences along a spectrum from the most concrete (at the base) to the most abstract (at the top). At the base are direct, purposeful experiences – hands-on activities where students interact with real objects and environments using all their senses. Moving upward, the model includes contrived experiences (simulations and models), dramatised experiences (role-plays), demonstrations, field trips, exhibits, educational television and films, still images and recordings, visual symbols (charts, maps), and finally, at the very top, verbal symbols – spoken or written words, the most abstract form of instruction.
The core idea is straightforward: the more concrete and multi-sensory an experience is, the more closely it resembles real life. The more abstract it is, the more it relies on the learner’s ability to mentally connect symbols with reality.
Common misconceptions about the Cone
The Cone of Experience is one of the most widely misrepresented models in education. A “corrupted” version has circulated for decades, attaching specific retention percentages – such as “we remember 10% of what we read and 90% of what we do.” Research published in the journal Medical Teacher has confirmed that Dale never assigned any such numbers. The original Cone has no percentages and no claims about how much learners retain at each level.
Another common mistake is treating the Cone as a hierarchy of effectiveness – assuming that concrete experiences are always better than abstract ones. Dale himself cautioned against this interpretation. He described the Cone as a descriptive model, not a prescription. Abstract learning (such as reading or listening to a lecture) is not inherently inferior; in fact, Dale noted that over-reliance on concrete experience could hinder meaningful generalisation. The model is best used to ensure that teachers employ a balanced mix of media and methods, rather than relying too heavily on any single type.
Applying the Cone in classroom planning
The practical takeaway from Dale’s framework is this: when planning a lesson, consider where your chosen activities fall on the spectrum. If every lesson relies on lectures and readings alone (the abstract end), students may struggle to connect ideas to real-world meaning. Conversely, if every lesson is purely hands-on without any conceptual discussion, students may fail to develop the ability to generalise and think abstractly.
A well-designed unit might begin with a video or demonstration (middle of the Cone) to introduce a concept, move to a simulation or role-play to deepen engagement, and conclude with a reading and class discussion to help students articulate what they’ve learned in more abstract terms. The key is variety and intentionality.
Diversity and tolerance: making learning inclusive
Effective learning experiences aren’t just academically rigorous – they’re also culturally responsive and inclusive. In classrooms that are becoming more diverse every year, learning must promote openness to new experiences, respect for different perspectives, and a genuine sense of belonging for every student.
Why diversity matters in learning
Research from Drexel University’s School of Education highlights that when lesson plans reflect students’ varied backgrounds, learners develop a deeper knowledge of the subject because they explore it from multiple perspectives. Diverse and integrated classrooms also promote stronger critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Beyond academics, exposure to different cultures and viewpoints builds tolerance and a greater sense of security in unfamiliar settings.
Strategies for promoting cultural inclusivity
There are several evidence-backed strategies teachers can use to weave diversity into everyday learning:
Use diverse learning materials. Textbooks, readings, and media should represent multiple nationalities, cultures, languages, and perspectives – not just the dominant culture. When students see themselves and others reflected in the curriculum, engagement increases.
Encourage multiple viewpoints. When solving a problem or discussing a topic, invite students to consider different solutions and perspectives. This teaches them that there’s rarely one “right” answer and that respectful disagreement is a strength, not a problem.
Get to know your students. Understanding each student’s cultural background, family context, and personal experiences allows teachers to design lessons that are relevant and respectful. As Teachers College, Columbia University recommends, taking time to listen to students’ stories and creating space for personal expression (such as journaling at the start or end of class) can make learning deeply personal and meaningful.
Celebrate cultural events and traditions. Designating time to explore holidays, traditions, and contributions from various cultures normalises diversity and helps all students develop empathy and cultural awareness.
Create a safe space for dialogue. Students should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and sharing experiences related to identity and culture without fear of judgement. This sense of safety is foundational to genuine inclusion in the classroom.
The link between diversity and deeper learning
Promoting diversity isn’t an add-on to good teaching – it’s an integral part of it. When students engage with perspectives different from their own, they practise the same analytical and evaluative skills that critical thinking demands. They learn to question assumptions, consider evidence from multiple angles, and communicate respectfully across differences. In this way, a culturally inclusive classroom naturally reinforces the very thinking skills that educators aim to develop.
Putting it all together: a framework for effective classroom experiences
The four themes discussed above – alignment with objectives, critical thinking, Dale’s Cone, and diversity – are not separate strategies to be used in isolation. They work best when integrated into a coherent teaching approach.
