Student group conflicts

In secondary schools, student group conflicts arise most often with elective subjects. If two electives are scheduled in the same slot and a student has chosen both, that student faces an impossible choice. To prevent this, schools use option blocks – groups of elective subjects scheduled in parallel. The key is to analyse student subject choices before building the option blocks so that the most popular combinations are never placed in the same block.

Distribute subjects evenly across the week. Avoid clustering all sessions of a single subject on consecutive days. A student who has three Mathematics periods should ideally have them spread across Monday, Wednesday, and Friday rather than Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This improves lesson flow and gives students time to consolidate learning between sessions. Keep the timetable flexible

A rigid timetable that collapses at the first disruption – a teacher falling ill, a lab being unavailable – is a fragile timetable. Building in some flexibility, such as a few “floating” periods that can absorb changes, makes the schedule resilient. Some schools maintain a Plan B timetable – a simplified version that activates when significant disruptions occur, such as during exam weeks or school events.

Communicate clearly

Once the timetable is finalised, it should be shared with all teachers, students, and administrative staff through multiple channels – physical notice boards, the school website, email, or a school management app. A timetable that exists only in the principal’s office is of no use to anyone.

Even experienced timetable makers fall into certain traps. Here are a few to watch out for:
