Think about the last time you truly lost track of time while doing something. Chances are, you were deeply interested in it. In education, this same force – interest – is one of the most powerful drivers of how students learn, how much they retain, and how far they go. Yet, interest is often treated as a nice-to-have rather than a core educational priority. Research published in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences describes interest as a motivational process that energizes learning, guides academic and career paths, and is essential to academic success. For teachers, understanding what interest is, how it develops, and how to nurture it in students is not just useful – it’s foundational.

What is interest, really?

Interest is not simply “liking” something. In educational psychology, interest is defined as a content-specific motivational characteristic – it has both a feeling dimension (the enjoyment or excitement one experiences) and a value dimension (the sense that the subject matters). When a student is genuinely interested in a topic, they don’t just pay attention to it – they assign personal meaning to it.

Researchers also distinguish between two types of interest: situational interest and individual interest. Situational interest is triggered by something external – a surprising fact, a gripping video, an unusual experiment. It’s short-term and context-specific. Individual interest, on the other hand, is a stable, internal predisposition to repeatedly engage with a subject over time. Individual interest can eventually become part of a person’s identity and shape their long-term goals and life trajectory.

Understanding this distinction is crucial for teachers. Situational interest can be created in a single lesson, but individual interest takes time to cultivate – and one can grow into the other.

How interest develops: the four-phase model

One of the most widely used frameworks in understanding interest development comes from psychologists Suzanne Hidi and K. Ann Renninger. Their four-phase model describes how learner interest deepens progressively through triggered situational interest, maintained situational interest, emerging individual interest, and well-developed individual interest. Both affective (emotional) and cognitive factors are at play in each phase.

Phase 1: Triggered situational interest

This is the spark. A student’s curiosity is caught by something novel, surprising, or personally relevant in the environment. Triggered situational interest results from short-term shifts in both emotional and cognitive processing, often sparked by environmental or textual features. At this phase, the student is aware of the topic but not yet deeply engaged.

Phase 2: Maintained situational interest

If the initial trigger is followed up meaningfully, the student begins to sustain focus over a longer period. Maintained situational interest involves focused attention and persistence over an extended episode, and may reoccur repeatedly. This phase requires deliberate support from teachers through engaging tasks, meaningful context, and continued relevance.

Phase 3: Emerging individual interest

Here, the student starts to independently seek out the subject – not because a teacher assigned it, but because they want to know more. This phase marks the beginning of an enduring predisposition to reengage with particular content over time, though it still requires some external support.

Phase 4: Well-developed individual interest

At this stage, interest is deeply embedded in the learner. They self-regulate their learning, seek out challenges, and derive genuine satisfaction from engaging with the subject. As interest develops at this level, it becomes increasingly coordinated with other variables such as self-efficacy, self-regulation, flow, and identity. This is the kind of interest that shapes career choices and lifelong learning habits.

Importantly, Renninger deliberately uses the word “phases” rather than “stages” because interest at every phase needs to be cultivated and sustained – it can be stimulated, and it can also fade. A phase passes; a stage implies permanence. This framing reminds teachers that interest is dynamic, not fixed.

Why interest matters for learning

When students learn from a place of interest, they tend to devote far more attention to the topic than when learning is driven purely by effort. This is because interest is closely tied to intrinsic motivation – the energy that comes from within, rather than from external rewards like grades or praise.

Consider two students working on the same assignment. One finds the topic dull and completes just the minimum required. The other is genuinely curious – they make connections, ask deeper questions, and go beyond what was asked. The student learning from interest engages more deeply: comparing problems, seeking patterns, and processing content at a higher level. The difference in outcomes is substantial.

Learning environments that draw on students’ curiosity and interest improve the overall quality of learning. Yet research also shows that when students are asked why they study, interest in the content itself tends to rank last – far behind grades and performance outcomes. This gap between what motivates genuine learning and what students think they’re supposed to care about is a challenge teachers are uniquely positioned to address.

Intrinsic motivation stemming from interest is associated with a deep approach to learning – one where students seek genuine understanding rather than surface-level recall. Students with higher intrinsic motivation show more propensity for deep learning and prefer assessments that offer autonomy and exploration.

Identifying students’ interests

Before teachers can nurture interest, they need to know what students are already interested in. This sounds simple, but in practice it requires intentional effort. Some direct, practical approaches include:

Interest inventories and surveys: Simple questionnaires at the start of the year asking about hobbies, favourite topics, and things students want to learn more about can give teachers rich information to draw on throughout the year.

Open-ended questions and discussions: Asking students what excites them about a topic – or what confuses them – surfaces both their existing interests and their curiosity gaps. Open-ended questions can have multiple valid answers, generate richer discussions, and require students to engage more deeply with material than simple factual recall.

Observation: Teachers who pay close attention to when students lean in, ask unsolicited questions, or spend extra time on a task have real-time data on what’s sparking interest. Observing students, listening to them, and talking with them about their thinking is one of the most effective ways to discover what genuinely engages them.

Student-led choices: When students are given some agency over how they approach a task, the choices they make reveal their interests. A student who gravitates toward data analysis over creative writing in a social studies project is telling you something important.

Strategies for sparking and sustaining interest in the classroom

Once teachers have a clearer picture of what students care about, the next step is aligning classroom activities with those interests – and creating conditions where new interests can take root.

Trigger situational interest with novelty and relevance

Structuring learning activities to catch students’ attention is one of the most effective ways to trigger interest. This can involve introducing a topic with a surprising fact, an unresolved problem, or a real-world connection that students didn’t expect. Novelty, complexity, and even a degree of mystery are all effective. Research from Gallup shows that among the top reasons students feel engaged, having a teacher make the topic stimulating and interesting ranks just as high as the topic itself being something they wanted to learn about.

Connect curriculum to real-world contexts

One of the most consistent findings in the research on student engagement is that students want to see relevance. When learners can connect abstract concepts to contexts they recognise and care about, interest and involvement increase sharply. A mathematics problem that uses sports statistics, a science experiment tied to a local environmental issue, or a literature analysis that draws on storytelling techniques from film – these connections answer the question students often don’t ask aloud: “Why does this matter?”

Use problem-based and inquiry-based learning

Organising a lesson around a problem for students to solve using course material – especially one tied to things they already care about – is a powerful way to connect student interest with learning goals. Inquiry-based learning, where students generate their own questions and research their own answers, triggers curiosity and drives deeper engagement than passive instruction.

Offer meaningful choices

Flexible frameworks that allow students to pursue common learning goals through personally meaningful approaches – such as choice boards, project menus, and differentiated assignments – honour individual interests without requiring entirely separate lesson plans. When a student who loves visual art can demonstrate a scientific concept through illustration, or a student interested in sports can explore statistics through athlete data, the learning becomes personally owned.

Enhance utility value

A particularly well-researched strategy is helping students see the personal utility of what they’re learning – that is, how it connects to their own goals and lives. Enhancing utility value, alongside attention-getting settings, contexts that evoke prior individual interest, and problem-based learning, are among the most effective interest-promoting interventions identified in the research. Even brief, structured activities where students write about how a topic relates to their own life have been shown to improve both interest and academic outcomes.

Build relationships and a supportive classroom environment

Interest doesn’t develop in isolation – it grows in environments where students feel safe, seen, and supported. Knowing a student’s interests, strengths, and challenges helps educators offer the right resources and build the kind of trust that makes students more willing to take intellectual risks. When students feel emotionally connected to their learning and their teacher, they are more likely to engage fully and push through challenges.

The risk of misdirected stimulation

One important caution: not every attention-grabbing strategy sustains genuine interest. Adding stimulating but irrelevant features to learning material can distract students rather than deepen their engagement – particularly for students who are already struggling. A funny video that has nothing to do with the lesson, or a sensational hook that doesn’t connect to the core concept, can generate temporary excitement while actually pulling attention away from meaningful learning. The key question teachers should ask is whether students seem to be learning because of the stimulating strategies, or in spite of them.

Aligning education with interest: a long-term view

When students are interested in an academic topic, they are more likely to attend class, pay attention, become engaged, take more courses, process information effectively, and ultimately perform well. Students who develop academic interests during school years are also better prepared for fulfilling careers and continued learning beyond formal education.

This makes a strong case for treating interest not as a side effect of good teaching, but as a deliberate outcome. Teachers who design their classrooms with students’ interests in mind – who take the time to identify what matters to their learners and build bridges between that and the curriculum – are not taking shortcuts. They are doing some of the most important pedagogical work there is.
