The standard format for documenting action research

Statement of the problem: Clearly state the issue you are investigating. A focused problem statement is not a vague complaint – it is a precise description of a gap or difficulty that can be studied and addressed.
Significance of the study: Explain why addressing this problem matters – for your students, for your school, and potentially for the wider education community. This is also where you can cite relevant literature or prior research that supports the importance of your inquiry.
Review of related literature: Examine the existing literature, focusing particularly on peer-reviewed studies published within the last five years, along with any foundational or seminal works relevant to your topic. Identify what has already been explored, what the findings were, and what gaps remain. Your study should position itself within this broader conversation.
2. Objectives

4. Sample and methodology
This is one of the most critical sections of your documentation. It describes who was involved in the research and how data was collected. A reader should be able to understand your process well enough to replicate it if they choose.
Sample: Describe your participants. It is important to collect multiple measures on the variables of interest, which encourages the teacher-researcher to cross-reference data from different sources.

Findings in action research should be considered illuminating rather than conclusive, as the sample used is typically not generalizable.
Suggestions for future research: End with forward-looking questions. What aspects of the problem remain unexplored? What follow-up studies would deepen understanding? This shows intellectual humility and keeps the inquiry alive for others in the community.
Additional quality considerations
Beyond the six sections above, a few cross-cutting practices will improve the overall quality of your documentation.
Write with clarity and precision. Your audience may include fellow teachers, school administrators, or education policymakers. Avoid discipline-specific jargon where plain language works just as well. Clear writing signals clear thinking.
Build in reflection throughout. Action research is iterative – plans are created, implemented, revised, then implemented again – making reflection an ongoing process rather than a final step. Rather than treating reflection as a box to tick at the end, weave it throughout your documentation wherever you describe decisions you made and why.
Seek peer review. Before finalizing your report, share it with a trusted colleague.
