Walk into any classroom and you’ll quickly notice that students don’t all absorb information in the same way. Some students light up when a teacher draws a diagram on the board. Others seem to grasp concepts only after talking through them. And some can’t fully understand something until they’ve actually done it with their hands. This isn’t a coincidence – it reflects genuine differences in how students prefer to receive and process information. Understanding these differences, and knowing how to respond to them, is one of the most practical skills a teacher can develop.

The concept of learning styles

The idea that students learn differently is not new. According to the American Psychological Association, the visual-auditory-kinesthetic (VAK) typology has roots going back to the psychology of mental imagery and word recall in the early twentieth century, later gaining traction in the 1970s through formal learning style assessment tools. By the 1980s, it had entered mainstream education discourse, and today it remains one of the most widely referenced frameworks in teacher training and classroom practice.

The VAK learning model, developed by Walter Burke Barbe and later expanded by Neil Fleming, classifies learners into three primary types: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (tactile). While most people draw on all three modes to some degree, they tend to have a dominant preference through which they engage most effectively with new material. An expanded version – the VARK model – adds a fourth category for reading/writing learners, though VAK remains the framework most commonly applied in school settings.

It’s worth noting that the scientific community has debated how rigidly these styles should be applied. Cognitive psychologist Daniel T. Willingham, writing in the American Educator, points out that what really matters in instruction is not just matching content to a student’s preferred modality, but choosing the modality that best suits the content itself. A map is inherently visual; a foreign language accent is inherently auditory. Teaching to the content’s natural mode, while also varying delivery, tends to serve all students better than pigeonholing each child into one fixed category.

With that nuance in mind, familiarity with the three learner types still gives teachers a valuable lens – not to label students, but to diversify instruction and ensure no one is consistently left behind.

Visual learners

Visual learners are individuals who prefer to take in information through seeing – using maps, graphs, diagrams, charts, colour-coded notes, and other visual representations. They tend to think in pictures and process the relationships between ideas most effectively when those relationships are shown graphically rather than described verbally.

Key characteristics

Visual learners typically prefer sitting at the front of the classroom where they can clearly see the teacher’s expressions and whatever is on the board. They are often well-organized, have strong visual memory, and can recall faces and locations with ease. They may struggle to follow long verbal instructions without an accompanying written or visual reference, and they’re easily distracted by visual clutter in the learning environment.

Classroom strategies for visual learners

Teachers can support visual learners by building visual elements deliberately into their lessons. Practical strategies include using mind maps, concept diagrams, colour coding, charts, and short instructional videos. When giving verbal directions, writing key steps on the board alongside the explanation helps visual learners anchor what they’re hearing. Providing structured handouts, encouraging students to sketch or doodle their understanding, and using visual timelines for processes all reinforce comprehension. Even something as simple as colour-coding notes by topic can significantly strengthen a visual learner’s ability to organise and retain information.

Auditory learners

Auditory learners process and retain information most effectively through hearing. They remember spoken explanations, can follow oral directions well, and often benefit from reading material aloud – even when studying alone. New ideas become clearer when explained out loud, whether by the teacher, a classmate, or themselves.

Key characteristics

Auditory learners tend to be skilled verbal communicators and are often adept at orally retelling stories and explaining concepts to others. They typically remember what was said in a lecture more easily than what was written in a textbook. They prefer verbal instructions over written ones, enjoy group discussion, and may hum or talk to themselves while working. Interestingly, while they thrive in listening-focused environments, too much background noise can become a distraction rather than a help.

Classroom strategies for auditory learners

Lectures, read-alouds, group discussions, and question-and-answer sessions are naturally well-suited to auditory learners. Teachers can further support them by encouraging students to repeat key facts aloud, participate in partner explanations, and use recordings of lessons for review. Group projects, podcasts, and recorded discussions are particularly effective tools. For memorisation tasks, pairing information with rhythm, rhyme, or a simple melody leverages auditory memory in a very direct way. When introducing a complex concept, having students “teach it back” to a partner is one of the most effective auditory reinforcement strategies available.

Kinesthetic (tactile) learners

Kinesthetic learners – sometimes called tactile learners – learn best through physical experience, movement, and direct engagement with material. They understand something fully when they can do it, build it, or act it out. Sitting still through a lecture-heavy lesson is often genuinely difficult for these students, not a matter of discipline.

Key characteristics

Kinesthetic learners tend to be physically active, prefer hands-on experimentation, and remember information far better when they’ve been directly involved in the learning process. They often learn a procedure by doing it rather than by watching or reading about it. They may fidget during passive instruction, gravitate toward lab work and project-based tasks, and find it harder to retain information from text alone.

Classroom strategies for kinesthetic learners

The most effective approach for kinesthetic learners is to give them something to do with the content. Physical manipulatives such as blocks, models, letter tiles, and globes allow students to engage with abstract ideas through touch. Role-playing scenarios, science experiments, field trips, simulations, and project-based tasks all serve kinesthetic learners well. Even small adjustments – like letting students trace letters on textured surfaces, use a standing desk, or incorporate physical movement into a memorisation activity – can make a significant difference. Research on the VAK learning model has shown measurable improvement in student performance when teachers incorporate kinesthetic activities, including in writing and language tasks that might not seem obviously physical.

Why most students are a mix – and why that matters

Most people are a combination of these three styles, with a tendency to lean toward one as their primary mode depending on the topic, the task, and even the time of day. A student who is primarily kinesthetic in physical education may be largely visual when studying geography. This means teachers should be cautious about attaching fixed labels to students and instead use learning style awareness as a guide for varying instructional delivery – not restricting it.

Research from the University of Michigan notes that learning preferences can also shift over time and across subjects, which further supports the case for flexible, responsive teaching rather than rigid categorisation. The goal is not to identify one style per student and teach to it exclusively – that approach can actually limit a student’s development by reducing exposure to other modes of learning they may benefit from.

The stronger case: teaching across all modalities

Where the real instructional power lies is not in matching a lesson to one group’s style, but in designing lessons that activate multiple senses simultaneously. This is what researchers call multimodal teaching, and the evidence behind it is considerably stronger than the evidence for strict style-matching. A 2020 study cited by Edutopia found that students had 73% better recall of new language vocabulary when they used their hands and bodies to physically mimic what the words meant – a finding that applies to all learners, not just kinesthetic ones. A 2022 meta-analysis of 183 studies confirmed that pairing words with physical actions is a highly effective memory tool, with an effect size well above the threshold considered “large” in educational research.

According to TrueLearn’s analysis of learning science, when teachers combine visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements – rather than teaching to one mode – learners are encouraged to tap into multiple cognitive pathways at the same time, producing deeper and more durable learning. The multimedia principle, well established in cognitive science, shows that combining words with visuals produces stronger understanding than text alone, benefiting every student regardless of their dominant preference.

Research published in Frontiers in Psychology (2023) confirms that combining multiple sensory stimuli in instructional content promotes cognitive performance, a sense of engagement, and better retention across diverse learner populations. This doesn’t mean every lesson needs to be a multi-activity production. It means that consciously incorporating at least two modalities – for instance, a brief diagram alongside a verbal explanation, followed by a short paired task – covers more ground for more students than any single-mode lesson.

Practical tips for a mixed-modality classroom

Bringing this together practically doesn’t require a complete redesign of every lesson. A few consistent habits can make a significant difference across an entire class. According to Engage Education, the most effective lesson planning for diverse learners should ideally incorporate activities that address all three learning styles – for instance, reading textbook content satisfies visual learners, explaining a topic aloud serves auditory learners, and a practical task meets the needs of kinesthetic learners. When possible, combining all three into a single activity produces the richest learning environment.

Other strategies include: asking students to explain what they’ve just learned to a partner (auditory reinforcement); using quick sketches or diagrams to summarise a concept before writing about it (visual reinforcement); and building short movement breaks or manipulative tasks into longer lessons (kinesthetic reinforcement). Observing which students consistently struggle when only one delivery mode is used is itself a useful diagnostic tool for identifying learner preferences in practice.

The University of Arkansas Student Success Center also recommends a multi-sensory study approach for students themselves – using models, real objects, and physical materials alongside written notes – which teachers can reinforce by designing take-home tasks that encourage this kind of combined engagement rather than passive rereading.

A word on avoiding rigid labels

One caution worth keeping in mind: categorising a student too firmly as “only a visual learner” or “a kinesthetic learner” can unintentionally narrow their educational experience. Research on early years learning makes this point clearly – children need rich, varied experiences across all modalities to develop fully. Learning style preferences should inform teaching decisions, not restrict them. A student labelled as kinesthetic who never gets exposure to visual learning strategies, or vice versa, may develop gaps that could have been easily avoided.

The most helpful mindset for teachers is to treat learner preferences as starting points for planning, not ceilings for expectation. Understanding that some students gravitate toward seeing, some toward hearing, and some toward doing gives you a framework for designing more varied, inclusive lessons – and that variety, ultimately, benefits everyone in the room.
