Think about the last time you learned something by watching someone else do it first – a colleague demonstrating a skill, a teacher working through a problem step by step, or even a peer explaining a concept in a study group. That kind of learning is not accidental. It is at the heart of two of the most influential theories in educational psychology: Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and Lev Vygotsky’s social-constructivist approach. Both frameworks shift the focus away from the isolated learner and place it firmly within the social world – recognizing that much of what we learn, we learn with and through others.

Bandura’s social learning theory: learning through observation

Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory proposes that people acquire new behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions by observing and imitating others within a social context. Unlike earlier behaviorist models, which insisted that learning only happens through direct reinforcement – reward or punishment applied to the learner’s own actions – Bandura demonstrated that we can learn simply by watching someone else and noting the consequences of their behavior. This made his theory a significant departure from the work of theorists like B.F. Skinner.

In his now-famous Bobo Doll Experiment (1961), Bandura showed that children who observed an adult behaving aggressively toward an inflatable doll subsequently imitated those same aggressive behaviors – even without being directly instructed or reinforced to do so. According to Bandura, people often imitate behaviors for which they are never directly reinforced; simply watching another person be rewarded for a behavior can be sufficient incentive. This is known as vicarious reinforcement.

The four stages of observational learning

Bandura’s framework identifies four cognitive processes that must occur for observational learning to take place:

  • Attention: The learner must first focus on the model’s behavior. Without attention, no learning occurs.
  • Retention: The observed behavior must be stored in memory – encoded as mental images or verbal descriptions – so it can be retrieved later.
  • Reproduction: The learner must be physically and cognitively capable of reproducing the behavior. Watching an expert does not guarantee immediate replication, but it provides a cognitive blueprint.
  • Motivation: The learner must have a reason to perform the behavior – whether driven by an anticipated reward, peer approval, or intrinsic interest.

These four stages highlight that social learning is a cognitive process. The learner is not passively absorbing information; they are actively interpreting, evaluating, and deciding whether to replicate what they observe. This is why Bandura’s theory is often described as the bridge between behaviorism and cognitive learning theory.

Self-efficacy: believing you can do it

One of Bandura’s most significant contributions alongside observational learning is the concept of self-efficacy – a learner’s belief in their own ability to succeed at a task. When learners observe successful peers or teachers, their confidence in their own capabilities increases significantly. A student who watches a classmate work through a difficult math problem and succeed is more likely to attempt a similar problem themselves. This has direct implications for classroom design: who students observe, and how those models perform, affects not just skill acquisition but also students’ willingness to try.

Types of models in the classroom

Bandura outlined three types of modeling relevant to education: live models (teachers or peers demonstrating behavior in person), verbal instruction (describing a behavior in detail), and symbolic models (learning through media, literature, or digital content). In modern classrooms, all three operate simultaneously. A teacher solving an equation on the board is a live model; a worked example in a textbook is symbolic; peer explanation during group work combines live modeling with verbal instruction.

Vygotsky’s social-constructivist approach: knowledge built through interaction

While Bandura emphasizes observation and imitation, Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory goes a step further – arguing that learning is not just influenced by social context but is fundamentally produced by it. Vygotsky rejected the idea that learning and social context could be separated. For him, all higher cognitive functions – reasoning, problem-solving, language – originate first in social interaction before being internalized by the individual. As he stated, every function in a child’s cultural development appears first on the social level, and only later on the individual level.

This perspective positions the teacher, peer, or any knowledgeable adult as essential to intellectual development – not just helpful, but necessary. Vygotsky believed that without interaction with more learned individuals, a learner’s cognitive growth would be severely limited, confined only to what they could discover independently.

The More Knowledgeable Other (MKO)

Central to Vygotsky’s framework is the concept of the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO). The MKO is any person – a teacher, mentor, parent, or peer – who has a higher level of understanding or skill in relation to a particular task. Crucially, the MKO does not have to be an adult or an expert. A classmate who grasps a concept more firmly can serve as an MKO for a student who is still developing that understanding. This democratizes the role of knowledge-sharing in the classroom and validates peer learning as a genuine pedagogical tool.

The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) refers to the gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance from a more knowledgeable other. Learning occurs most powerfully within this zone – tasks that are beyond the learner’s current independent capability but achievable with the right support. Tasks that are too easy yield no growth; tasks that are too difficult lead to frustration. The ZPD is the productive middle ground.

It is important to note that the ZPD is not fixed. It shifts constantly as the learner develops. What lies within a student’s ZPD today becomes part of their independent skill set tomorrow, while new challenges enter the zone. This dynamic quality makes the ZPD particularly useful for educators practicing differentiated instruction and formative assessment.

Scaffolding: structured support for growth

The practical classroom application of the ZPD is scaffolding. Although Vygotsky himself never used the term, it was later developed by psychologists Jerome Bruner, David Wood, and Gail Ross as a direct extension of his ZPD concept. Scaffolding refers to the temporary, structured support provided by a teacher or MKO to help a learner complete a task they could not yet manage alone – with the explicit goal of gradually withdrawing that support as the learner gains competence.

In practice, the teacher begins with strong guidance – demonstrations, explicit instruction, modeling, facilitated activities – and progressively releases control to the student as understanding develops. Tasks become more challenging as the learner moves through their ZPD. This gradual handover of responsibility is sometimes described as the “I do, we do, you do” model of instruction.

Common scaffolding strategies in the classroom include:

  • Think-alouds: The teacher verbally narrates their thought process while solving a problem, making expert reasoning visible.
  • Worked examples: Students study completed examples before attempting problems independently.
  • Questioning: Rather than providing answers, teachers ask guiding questions to move students toward their own conclusions.
  • Peer pairing: Higher-ability students work alongside those who need more support, with the MKO role rotating naturally.
  • Chunking: Complex tasks are broken into smaller, manageable steps so learners are not overwhelmed.

Research published in Nurse Educator confirms that scaffolding strategies – including modeling, questioning, and cognitive structuring – effectively shift learning from dependence on others toward self-directed, internalized understanding. Scaffolding is not about doing the work for the student; it is about providing just enough support to enable them to do it themselves.

Where Bandura and Vygotsky converge

Though developed independently, Bandura’s and Vygotsky’s theories share significant common ground. Both reject the notion that learning is a solitary, internally driven process. Both place social interaction at the center of how knowledge and skills are acquired. And both have been widely validated in educational research and classroom practice.

Where they differ is in emphasis. Bandura focuses on the observer – how watching a model, processing consequences, and building self-efficacy drives behavior. Vygotsky focuses on the interaction itself – arguing that dialogue, collaboration, and guided problem-solving are not just helpful but constitutive of cognitive development. Together, they provide a comprehensive picture of why classrooms need to be social environments, not just spaces for individual instruction.

Educational implications: designing for social learning

For educators, these theories carry concrete instructional implications. Applying Vygotsky’s framework means identifying each student’s ZPD and designing tasks that sit just beyond their independent capability – challenging enough to promote growth, supported enough to prevent failure. This is the foundation of what is now called personalized or differentiated learning.

Applying Bandura’s framework means being deliberate about who and what students observe. Teachers who strategically model positive academic habits, problem-solving approaches, and social behaviors provide clear, imitable examples that students naturally internalize. This is why teacher modeling is considered one of the highest-leverage instructional strategies available – not because students are told what to do, but because they see it done well and believe they can do it too.

In social constructivist classrooms, the teacher’s role shifts from transmitter of information to facilitator of meaning-making. Group discussions, collaborative problem-solving, and peer teaching are not supplementary activities – they are the primary mechanism through which learning is constructed. Language itself becomes a tool: classroom dialogue is how shared understanding is built and how external social knowledge becomes internal cognitive structure.
