Most of us learned fractions in a classroom with textbooks and worksheets. Yet many of us still struggle to use them confidently in daily situations – splitting a bill, scaling a recipe, or reading a map. This disconnect between knowing something and being able to use it is not a personal failing. It points to a deeper problem in how traditional education is often structured. Situated Learning, a theory developed by anthropologist Jean Lave and computer scientist Etienne Wenger in 1991, directly addresses this gap. It argues that learning is not just a cognitive event that happens inside a person’s head – it is a social, contextual process, and it works best when it happens in the same environment where the knowledge will eventually be applied.

What is situated learning?

Situated learning is grounded in a straightforward premise: knowledge and skills are best acquired in the context in which they will be used. Rather than treating knowledge as a fixed body of information that can be delivered in the abstract, Lave and Wenger saw learning as something that emerges through participation – through doing, interacting, and engaging with a real community of practice. In their view, the situation itself is not just a backdrop to learning; it is an active part of what shapes what gets learned and how deeply it is understood.

This stands in direct contrast to much of what happens in traditional schooling, where content is often separated from the real-world situations in which it matters. As researchers Brown, Collins, and Duguid noted in their influential 1989 paper Situated Cognition and the Culture of Learning, conventional schools tend to treat knowledge as something “theoretically independent of the situations in which it is learned and used” – and that separation, they argued, is precisely what makes so much classroom learning difficult to retain or apply.

Core concepts of situated learning theory

Community of practice

At the heart of situated learning is the concept of a community of practice (CoP). Lave and Wenger describe communities of practice as everywhere – at work, at school, at home, in leisure. A CoP is a group of people who share a concern, a craft, or a profession, and who deepen their knowledge and skills by interacting regularly. It is not just about working together; it is about building relationships, sharing information, and developing a shared identity around that practice.

According to Etienne Wenger, three elements must be present for a genuine community of practice to exist: a domain (a shared area of interest or expertise), a community (people who interact and learn together), and a practice (shared activities, tools, and ways of addressing problems). Simply sharing the same profession or classroom does not automatically create a CoP – active interaction and shared learning are essential.

Legitimate peripheral participation (LPP)

Legitimate peripheral participation (LPP) is the mechanism through which newcomers enter and learn within a community of practice. Lave and Wenger argue that learners join communities through immersion, starting at the edges and gradually absorbing the community’s modes of action, values, and meanings. A new member begins by participating in simpler, peripheral tasks. Over time, as they gain competence and confidence, they move toward full, central participation in the community’s core practices.

This is not a formal training programme or a step-by-step curriculum. LPP describes a largely unintentional process – the learner grows through natural engagement with the environment and the people within it. The novice observes experienced practitioners, contributes to real tasks, receives feedback, and gradually internalises the knowledge and norms of the community. The learning is embedded in the doing, not delivered separately from it.

Context, content, and community

William Rankin’s framework for understanding situated learning identifies three interconnected elements: content (the facts and processes of a task), context (the situation, values, and environmental cues in which learning takes place), and community (the social group within which the learner creates and negotiates meaning). Situated learning also involves participation – active collaboration with others to solve problems – as a fourth dimension that ties the other three together.

Crucially, situated learning also integrates two types of knowledge that are often separated in traditional education: declarative knowledge (knowing what) and procedural knowledge (knowing how). Situated learning insists that “knowing and doing” cannot be separated – and this integration is precisely what makes learning in authentic contexts so much more effective and durable.

Why context matters so much in learning

One of the persistent problems in conventional education is what researchers call inert knowledge – information that learners can recall in an exam but fail to use in real-world situations. Knowledge acquired in one context, such as a classroom, is often not transferred to another, such as a workplace, because knowledge is not a portable object. It is context-bound. It is shaped by the environment, the tools, and the social interactions through which it was originally formed.

This is why context is not just helpful – it is essential. When a medical student learns about patient communication by reading a textbook, and then encounters a real patient for the first time, the gap between what they “know” and what they can actually “do” can be significant. But when learning happens in a clinical setting, alongside experienced practitioners, dealing with real cases, the knowledge is constructed differently. It is tied to the situation from the start.

Real-world applications of situated learning

Apprenticeships and internships

Apprenticeships are perhaps the oldest and most direct form of situated learning. Internships and mentorship programmes provide learners with hands-on experience within professional settings, integrating theoretical knowledge with actual industry practices. In these settings, the learner works alongside experienced practitioners, observes real decisions being made, and takes on progressively more complex tasks. Whether in carpentry, nursing, law, or software development, the learning happens through genuine participation, not simulation.

Lave and Wenger’s original research involved studying a wide range of apprentice communities – including Yucatec midwives, Vai and Gola tailors, naval quartermasters, meat cutters, and members of Alcoholics Anonymous – to understand how people actually become competent members of a practice community. What they found, consistently, was that mastery was inseparable from participation in the social and cultural context of the work itself.

Project-based and problem-based learning

In classroom settings, project-based learning (PBL) is one of the most practical ways to apply situated learning principles. In PBL, students work on complex, real-world challenges over a sustained period, applying knowledge and skills in a context that mirrors how those skills would be used professionally. Situated learning environments place students in authentic learning situations where they are actively immersed in an activity while drawing on problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The teacher’s role shifts from lecturer to facilitator – providing guidance, scaffolding complexity, and helping students recognise contextual cues.

Problem-based learning (PBL) takes a similar approach: students are presented with a real problem and must think through it the way a practitioner would. The best learning occurs when students are faced with a problem that needs critical thinking, the problem is realistic and relevant to a real situation, and the instructor acts as a coach rather than a lecturer.

Field trips and experiential activities

Field trips, laboratory sessions, and immersive practical activities are also well-established forms of situated learning. Cooperative education experiences, music and sports practice sessions, and laboratory environments that replicate actual work settings all place the student in an active, contextualised learning experience. In each case, the student is not observing the world from a safe distance – they are situated within it, addressing real problems as they arise.

Situated learning in virtual and online environments

Situated learning is not restricted to physical classrooms or workplaces. Immersive virtual environments have been explored as a way to expand opportunities for situated learning, presenting problem contexts in vivid and interactive formats and enabling a variety of exploration activities. Online platforms, collaborative tools, discussion forums, and simulation environments can all replicate the social and contextual dimensions of a community of practice – when designed thoughtfully.

Recent advances in technology have made it possible to virtually connect individuals within distributed communities of practice, allowing learners to collaborate across geography. Research shows that in these environments, learners do not merely receive and feed back information – they actively use what they know to explore, negotiate, interpret, and create. A digital marketing student, for instance, might work on an actual marketing campaign as part of an online course, engaging with real data, real feedback, and real industry professionals. The learning is situated, even if the environment is virtual.

The University of California, Berkeley’s GSI Teaching and Resource Center notes that academic disciplines themselves function as communities of practice – and that students learn how to participate in these disciplinary cultures in much the same way they become conditioned in the norms of other communities. For learning to be both authentic and legitimate, assignments and activities should connect to skills that real practitioners in that field would actually use.

Implications for teachers and instructional design

For educators, situated learning offers both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is that it demands a shift away from content-transmission toward context creation. As learners use new skills in familiar contexts and adapt them to their own subject areas, the learning becomes authentic and directly relevant – but this requires careful design. Teachers must think not only about what to teach but about the environment in which that teaching takes place.

Several practical guidelines follow from this. Activities should be applicable and transferable to students’ homes, communities, and workplaces. Situations should be chosen that engage learners in complex, realistic, problem-centred tasks. Teachers should move from being transmitters of content to facilitators who track progress, build collaborative environments, encourage reflection, and help learners recognise contextual cues that support understanding.

Importantly, the construction of knowledge must be embedded in a context where learners can actually participate and apply what is learned. A social setting alone is not sufficient. The social must be combined with the authentic – and the authentic must be grounded in the real practices of the domain being studied.

Limitations and considerations

Situated learning is a powerful framework, but it is not without practical constraints. Not all topics lend themselves easily to authentic, real-world immersion, particularly in subjects that are more theoretical or abstract. Creating genuinely situated learning environments requires resources, planning, and expertise that may not always be available, especially in under-resourced school settings.

There is also the question of scale. There are multiple challenges surrounding situated learning, stemming from the complexities of real-world problems, the demands of exploration, and the difficulty of structured reflection afterward. Educators working within standardised curricula and fixed assessment systems often find it hard to replicate the fluidity of a genuine community of practice. Acknowledging these tensions does not undermine the theory – it highlights the importance of designing situated learning carefully and deliberately, rather than treating it as a simple formula.
