Every classroom holds a diverse mix of learners – and some of those learners experience the world in ways that standard teaching methods simply don’t address. Differently-abled learners, those with intellectual, sensory, or specific learning disabilities, are not less capable. They learn differently. And when teachers understand those differences and adapt their practice accordingly, the classroom becomes a space where every student can genuinely progress. This post breaks down the key disability categories teachers encounter and offers practical, evidence-based strategies for each.

What does “differently-abled” mean in an educational context?
The term “differently-abled” describes individuals who face physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges that affect how they engage with traditional educational settings. Rather than framing disability as a deficit, the term recognizes that these learners have unique profiles of strengths and challenges. Inclusive education, as defined under frameworks like the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), is built on the principle that children with disabilities should be educated alongside their peers to the maximum extent appropriate, with the right supports in place.
The disabilities most commonly encountered in classrooms fall into two broad groups: sensory and intellectual disabilities (such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, and intellectual disability), and specific learning disabilities (SLDs) such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia. Each has distinct characteristics – and each requires a tailored teaching response.
Intellectual disability: what teachers need to know
Intellectual disability (ID) – previously referred to as “mental retardation,” a term now considered outdated and stigmatizing – refers to significantly reduced capacity to understand complex information, acquire new skills, and function independently. According to ADCET, approximately 75% of people with intellectual disability are only mildly affected, with the remaining 25% experiencing moderate, severe, or profound impairment. Students in the mild range often function well socially and can lead relatively independent adult lives; their challenges become most visible in academic contexts.
Common classroom characteristics include difficulties with abstract reasoning, generalising concepts, problem-solving, and following multi-step instructions. Attention, memory, and adaptive skills may also be affected.
Teaching strategies for intellectual disability
Break tasks into small steps. Task analysis – breaking a complex task into smaller, teachable components – is one of the most widely used and effective approaches. Each step is taught, practised, and reinforced before moving to the next. Use visual supports. Visual schedules, first-then boards, picture-word cards, and color-coded charts help students anticipate transitions, follow routines, and build literacy and numeracy skills with greater independence. Ensure predictability. Structured routines reduce anxiety and create a safe learning environment. Consistent classroom management, clearly posted schedules, and step-by-step directions help students stay oriented and engaged. Individualise instruction. Instructional strategies for students with ID should focus on improving independence and self-reliance, using a combination of explicit instruction and hands-on, active learning experiences. Where available, Individualised Education Programs (IEPs) provide a formal roadmap for this personalisation.
Hearing impairment: barriers and bridges
Hearing impairment ranges from mild hearing loss to complete deafness. It affects not only a student’s ability to follow verbal instruction but also their language development, literacy skills, and social confidence. Research shows that hearing-impaired children face challenges at every stage of their education, with significant proportions not reaching expected standards in reading, writing, and mathematics by the end of primary school.
Students with hearing impairment do not necessarily need constant individual attention – what they need is a classroom environment thoughtfully designed for visual access and reduced auditory barriers.
Teaching strategies for hearing impairment
Face the class when speaking and avoid talking while facing the whiteboard. Minimise background noise – use rugs, cork boards, and latex caps on chair legs to absorb sound, and seat hearing-impaired students away from noise sources like fans or open windows. Provide instructions both verbally and in writing so students are never reliant on auditory input alone. Use visual aids extensively – graphic organisers, captioned videos, and written summaries of key points ensure content accessibility. Even students with profound hearing loss may benefit from visual-gestural strategies such as Cued Speech or sign language, and where sign language is a student’s primary mode of communication, teachers should learn at least basic signs. FM systems (radio aids worn by the teacher) can help transmit the teacher’s voice directly to a student’s hearing aid, significantly improving access to spoken instruction.
Visual impairment: teaching beyond the visual
Visual impairment includes a wide spectrum – from partial sight to complete blindness. Students with visual impairments require materials in accessible formats and a classroom environment that is verbally rich, tactilely informative, and physically navigable. Instructional materials including handouts, notes, and overhead content must be available in alternative formats – audio files, enlarged print, Braille, or scanned digital copies – and these need to be prepared well in advance.
Teaching strategies for visual impairment
Verbalise everything written on the board – never assume a student with visual impairment can access projected or written content independently. Pre-teach vocabulary using concrete, multisensory experiences combined with verbal explanation; new terms should be spelled out verbally. Important concepts should be introduced with real objects and tactile materials, not just descriptions. Always address the student by name before speaking to them, particularly in group settings where they may not be aware you are addressing them. Collaborate with specialist teachers (Teachers of the Visually Impaired, or TVIs) to adapt materials and identify appropriate assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification software, and Braille printers.
Specific learning disabilities: a closer look
Specific learning disabilities (SLDs) are neurological in origin and are not related to intelligence, sensory problems, or lack of educational opportunity. Students with SLDs are typically of average or above-average intelligence but process certain types of information differently. The four most commonly encountered SLDs in the classroom are dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia – and they often co-occur with one another.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. According to Edutopia, it affects 5 to 17 percent of students and occurs on a spectrum, from mild to profound. It is hereditary and linked to differences in brain areas involved in phonological processing. Students with dyslexia may struggle with decoding, reading fluency, spelling, and written expression – but often demonstrate strong abilities in problem-solving, creativity, and verbal communication.
Key strategies: Use multisensory instruction that activates visual, auditory, and tactile pathways simultaneously – for example, having students see, say, and write a word while tracing it. Provide audiobooks and text-to-speech software so students can access content at their intellectual level without being limited by reading decoding. Allow extended time on assignments and exams. Use dyslexia-friendly fonts such as OpenDyslexic, larger font sizes, and left-aligned text. Offer oral exams as an alternative where appropriate. Ensure reading instruction is systematic and cumulative – each new concept builds on previously mastered ones.
Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia is a disorder affecting the physical or cognitive processes involved in writing. It affects an estimated 5-20% of the population, and is often mistaken for laziness or inattention because illegible handwriting may be the most visible symptom. Dysgraphia can stem from dyslexia, motor coordination difficulties, or problems with spatial awareness, and it does not indicate low intelligence.
Key strategies: Allow students to use devices for notetaking and to submit work via audio or video recording rather than handwritten text. Provide speech-to-text software and graphic organisers to help with structuring written work. Occupational therapy is the primary intervention for the physical aspects of dysgraphia, helping improve fine motor skills, hand posture, and visual memory. Give explicit instruction in writing rules – students with dysgraphia do not pick these up naturally – and use prompts and cues to help them recall the conventions of different writing forms. Allow extended time on any written tasks.
Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability in mathematics, sometimes called “math dyslexia.” It involves difficulty with number sense, basic arithmetic, memorisation of math facts, understanding quantities, and spatial-mathematical reasoning. It is not a result of low intelligence or poor teaching but reflects a distinct difference in how the brain processes numerical information. Dyscalculia is less well understood than dyslexia, and there are fewer formal intervention programmes – but effective classroom strategies do exist.
Key strategies: Use multisensory math instruction – teaching concepts through sight, touch, hearing, and movement. Concrete manipulatives (physical objects like counters, blocks, or number lines) give students a tangible way to understand quantity and change. Teach concepts in a logical sequence where each skill builds on the last. Allow calculators for basic computations so students can focus cognitive effort on higher-level reasoning. Provide structures such as reminders, timers, and checklists to support organisation. Where data is presented numerically, offer equivalent representations in narrative or visual form.
Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder)
Dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a neurological condition affecting the planning and execution of coordinated physical movements. Around 6% of school-aged children are thought to have dyspraxia. Signs include poor balance, clumsiness, illegible handwriting, difficulty with visual perception, and challenges with speech and organisation. Like other SLDs, it is not related to intelligence – it reflects differences in how the brain processes and transmits information to the body.
Key strategies: Allow additional time for tasks requiring physical coordination – writing, cutting, drawing, sports activities. Provide graphic organisers and planning templates to support sequencing and organisation of work. Use technology to reduce reliance on handwriting. Break multi-step physical tasks into clearly demonstrated, small steps. Occupational therapy referrals are valuable for addressing motor coordination challenges. Seating arrangements should support good posture and stability, reducing the physical effort needed to remain focused.
Cross-cutting strategies for inclusive teaching
Several principles apply broadly across all differently-abled learners and form the foundation of genuinely inclusive practice.
Differentiated instruction means adjusting content, process, product, and learning environment to meet varied learning profiles. Equity is not giving all students the same thing – it is giving each student what they need to succeed. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) takes this further by designing flexible lessons from the outset, offering multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement for all learners. Assistive technology – from screen readers and FM systems to speech-to-text apps and audiobooks – plays a growing role in levelling the playing field. Ongoing professional development for teachers is equally critical: equipping educators with the knowledge and confidence to support diverse learners is at the heart of building truly inclusive systems. Finally, collaboration with families, specialist teachers, and therapists ensures that strategies are consistent across settings and grounded in each student’s individual needs.
Inclusive education is not simply about placement – putting a differently-abled student in a mainstream classroom does not automatically mean they are included. Genuine inclusion requires adaptable learning environments, awareness of differentiated learning, and a commitment at the institutional level to removing barriers. When teachers invest in understanding the specific profile of each learner in their class, the benefits extend beyond the differently-abled students themselves – research consistently shows that inclusive classrooms foster stronger social-emotional skills, greater empathy, and higher achievement for all students.
