Every student who enters a classroom follows a path – a structured route designed to take them from where they are to where they need to be. But what exactly defines that path? The answer lies in understanding curriculum, a term so widely used in education that its deeper meaning often gets overlooked. From its ancient Latin roots to modern interpretations by leading educationists, the concept of curriculum has expanded far beyond a simple list of subjects. It now encompasses every experience, interaction, and goal that shapes a learner’s educational journey.

The etymology of curriculum

The word “curriculum” has its origins in classical Latin. It derives from the Latin verb “currere,” which means “to run” or “to proceed.” In its original usage, curriculum referred to a running course or a racecourse – the path a runner would follow to reach the finish line. Over time, this meaning was transferred into educational contexts. The idea was that education, much like a race, has a defined course with a clear destination or goal, and students must follow that course to reach it.

The first recorded use of “curriculum” in an educational setting appeared in the Professio Regia, a work by University of Paris professor Petrus Ramus, published posthumously in 1576. The term later appeared in University of Leiden records in 1582. By the seventeenth century, the University of Glasgow had adopted the word to describe its course of study, marking the first known use of the term in English in 1633. By the nineteenth century, European universities regularly used “curriculum” to describe both the full programme of study and specific course content within it.

This etymological background is important because it frames the fundamental idea behind curriculum: it is a structured pathway designed with a specific purpose. Just as a racecourse has a start, a route, and a finish, a curriculum has goals, content, methods, and outcomes. Understanding this origin helps educators appreciate that curriculum is not just about what is taught – it is about the entire journey of learning.

Various definitions of curriculum

Defining curriculum has never been straightforward. Different educationists have approached the concept from different angles, and their definitions reflect the evolving understanding of what education should accomplish. Here are some of the most influential perspectives.

Cunningham’s perspective

One of the most well-known definitions comes from Cunningham, who described curriculum as a tool in the hands of an artist (the teacher) used to shape the learner (the pupil) according to specific goals (objectives) within the school environment (the studio). What makes this definition notable is that it places the teacher at the centre of the curriculum process – not merely as a deliverer of content but as a creative professional who moulds learning experiences. The learner, in Cunningham’s view, is not passive but a self-active, self-determining individual who responds consciously to the curriculum.

Harold Rugg (1927)

Harold Rugg offered a more experience-centred definition. He described the curriculum as a series of experiences and activities that have maximum relevance to the learner’s real life, providing the kind of development that helps them meet and navigate life situations effectively. Rugg was a key figure in the progressive education movement, and his definition reflected the belief that curriculum should not be limited to academic subjects but should connect directly to the lived experiences of students.

Smith, Stanley, and Shores (1957)

Smith, Stanley, and Shores took a more structured approach. They viewed curriculum as a sequence of potential experiences set up in school to help learners develop discipline in thinking and acting. Their focus was on the intentional design of learning experiences – the idea that schools deliberately create situations in which students develop specific skills and thought patterns. This definition emphasises planning and purpose, treating the curriculum as a deliberate educational instrument.

Carter V. Good (1959)

Carter V. Good provided one of the more formal definitions, describing curriculum as a general plan of content or specific instructional materials that a school offers its students to qualify them for graduation, certification, or entry into a professional or vocational field. Good’s definition is notably outcome-oriented – it links the curriculum directly to concrete results like qualifications and career readiness. This perspective is particularly relevant in professional and vocational education, where the curriculum serves as a bridge between academic preparation and the demands of the working world.

Other notable definitions

Several other scholars have contributed important definitions over the decades. Franklin Bobbitt (1918), who authored one of the first textbooks on curriculum, described it as the entire range of experiences – both directed and undirected – that help develop the abilities of the individual. Hollis Caswell and Doak Campbell (1935) defined curriculum as all the experiences children have under the guidance of teachers. Ralph Tyler (1957) described it as all learning experiences planned and directed by the school to achieve its educational goals. And Hilda Taba (1962) saw curriculum as a plan for action – a written document that includes strategies for achieving desired goals.

What is clear from these definitions is a gradual shift in thinking. Early definitions focused narrowly on subjects and content. Over time, the concept expanded to include all learning experiences – planned and unplanned, inside and outside the classroom – that contribute to a student’s growth and development.

A comprehensive view of curriculum

Modern educational thinking treats curriculum as much more than a syllabus or a list of subjects. It is understood as the totality of student experiences that occur within the educational process. This comprehensive view, widely supported in contemporary education literature, recognises that learning does not happen only through textbooks and lectures. It happens through interactions with peers, participation in co-curricular activities, engagement with the school environment, and even through what is not taught.

The explicit and hidden curriculum

The explicit curriculum refers to the formally documented learning plan – the subjects to be taught, the objectives to be met, and the assessments to be conducted. This is what most people think of when they hear the word “curriculum.”

However, there is also a hidden curriculum, a concept attributed to Philip W. Jackson. The hidden curriculum refers to the unwritten lessons students learn from the way school life is organised – the values, norms, and attitudes communicated through school culture, teacher behaviour, peer dynamics, and institutional expectations. For example, students learn punctuality, discipline, cooperation, and social hierarchies not through a textbook but through the daily routines and social structures of the school.

The excluded (null) curriculum

Equally important is the null or excluded curriculum – topics, perspectives, and content areas that are deliberately or inadvertently left out of the curriculum. What a school chooses not to teach can be just as influential as what it includes. If topics like mental health, gender equality, or financial literacy are absent from the curriculum, students may lack critical knowledge and awareness in these areas. The null curriculum shapes learners by its very absence.

The role of teachers and students

In this comprehensive view, teachers are not just deliverers of content. They are facilitators who interpret, adapt, and bring the curriculum to life. Their individual teaching styles, experiences, and perspectives shape how students experience the curriculum. Similarly, students are not passive recipients. They actively construct knowledge through their personal engagement with learning experiences. This means that even with a standardised written curriculum, the experienced curriculum – what students actually learn and take away – varies from classroom to classroom and student to student.

Dimensions of curriculum

To understand curriculum more deeply, it helps to examine it through two important theoretical lenses: the Ends-Means dimension and the Existential-Personal dimension. These two perspectives offer contrasting yet complementary ways of thinking about what curriculum is and what it should achieve.

The ends-means perspective

The Ends-Means perspective is rooted in a goal-oriented approach to education. In this view, “ends” refer to the desired learning outcomes or educational objectives, and “means” refer to the resources, strategies, and methods used to achieve those outcomes. This dimension is closely associated with the work of Ralph Tyler, whose model treats curriculum development as a systematic process of defining objectives, selecting content, organising learning experiences, and evaluating results.

In practice, the Ends-Means perspective is dominant in most formal education systems. When a school sets learning standards, designs assessments, and plans instruction to meet specific benchmarks, it is operating within this dimension. The strength of this approach is its clarity – everyone involved knows what the goals are and what methods will be used to reach them. However, critics argue that an overemphasis on predetermined outcomes can limit spontaneous learning, reduce education to a checklist, and overlook the diverse needs and interests of individual learners.

The existential-personal perspective

The Existential-Personal perspective takes a fundamentally different approach. Drawing from existential philosophy, this dimension focuses on the personal development, self-awareness, and subjective experience of the learner. Rather than viewing curriculum as a fixed set of objectives to be achieved, this perspective treats it as a living, evolving process shaped by the learner’s own experiences, choices, and search for meaning.

In this view, education is not just about acquiring knowledge or skills. It is about helping students become authentic individuals who understand themselves, make responsible choices, and find personal meaning in what they learn. The existentialist approach to education values open-ended inquiry, self-reflection, and learner autonomy over standardised outcomes and prescribed content.

Key features of the Existential-Personal dimension include an emphasis on personal meaning – helping students connect what they learn to their own lives and experiences. It also values authenticity, encouraging learners to engage with real-world situations rather than abstract or detached content. Additionally, it promotes self-reflection, making introspection and critical self-examination integral parts of the learning process.

Balancing the two dimensions

Neither dimension alone provides a complete picture of curriculum. A purely Ends-Means approach risks becoming rigid and impersonal. A purely Existential-Personal approach, while deeply enriching, may lack the structure needed to ensure educational consistency and accountability. The most effective curricula find a balance between the two – maintaining clear goals and standards while also leaving room for personal exploration, critical thinking, and individual growth.

This balance is particularly relevant in today’s educational landscape, where there is growing recognition that students need more than academic knowledge. They need emotional intelligence, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of purpose. A curriculum that integrates both dimensions can address cognitive development alongside personal and social growth, producing well-rounded learners prepared for the complexities of modern life.

Why understanding curriculum matters for educators

For teachers and education professionals, understanding the concept of curriculum at this level is not merely academic – it is practical. Every decision a teacher makes in the classroom, from choosing a teaching method to designing an assessment, is a curriculum decision. When teachers understand the broader scope of curriculum – beyond just the textbook – they are better equipped to create meaningful, inclusive, and effective learning experiences.

Recognising the hidden curriculum helps teachers become more aware of the unintended messages their classroom practices may send. Understanding the null curriculum prompts them to think critically about what might be missing from the content they teach. And appreciating the existential-personal dimension encourages them to see each student as a unique individual with their own learning needs and aspirations, not just a participant in a standardised programme.

The evolution of curriculum definitions – from a narrow focus on subjects and content to a comprehensive understanding of all student experiences – reflects a fundamental shift in how education is understood. Curriculum is not static. It is a dynamic, multidimensional concept that continues to evolve as our understanding of teaching and learning deepens.
